Gulf-bound AI Passengers have a Harrowing Time

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 23 (PTI): Passengers from Kerala to Middle East destinations are going through a harrowing time with Air India announcing cancellation of many of its flights since last week.

Passengers created unruly scenes at the airport here yesterday when a Sharjah-bound flight was cancelled at the last minute. Though the reason for cancellation was cited as "technical," the flight was learnt to have been diverted for Haj operations to other states.

Airport sources said though many flights would have to be diverted for Haj pilgrimage, only the Air India management was to be blamed for last-minute cancellations as the Haj operations are all pre-planned.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala protested the frequent cancellations and charged AI with levying "exorbitant fares" from Gulf-bound passengers. They wanted Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to intervene in the matter and prevail upon the authorities concerned to make alternative arrangements.

Chandy, in a statement here, said he had brought the matter to the Prime Minister's notice at the recent 'Emerging Kerala' event in Kochi. Chennithala sent a letter to Singh, seeking his immediate intervention to find a solution to the problem.

Shashi Tharoor, MP, representing the capital in the Lok Sabha, also criticised Air India, saying, "The goodwill of the national carrier is at stake" by ignoring the plight of passengers, some of whom faced the prospect of losing jobs.

Travel agents say it is incomprehensible why Air India cancels flights in busy and profit-making sectors like the Kerala-Gulf region, leaving out lean sectors in other parts of the country where even fuel cost was not being recovered from flight operations.

Most flights cancelled are Air India Express flights, 90 per cent of which were being operated from Kerala.

Air India had cancelled 168 flights from three international airports in Kerala -- Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode -- to Gulf destinations from September 17, Kerala State Travel Agents Association president K V Muraleedharan said.

Scores of passengers, including those who had to report for duty and join new postings in time, are now running from pillar to post to find other flights. Seizing on the chance, private airlines have begun increasing fares to the Gulf steeply, he said.

Its win win situation for both. If they don’t provide flight for Haj pilgrims, their community will blame and if they cancel other sectors public will blame. Here there is no point in blaming AIE but Central Government should appoint competent Haj Management to arrange / accommodate all pilgrims within allotted time.

It must be highlighted that most AI Express flights are from and to Kerala. This is the very reason their HQ was planned at Kochi. Please note that Haj requirements are a Govt DEMAND and AI has no option but to submit and keep a strict schedule because of the fixed slots for Haj flights at Saudi airports. Therefore in the event of a snag, they are obliged to provide alternate aircraft immediately from wherever. This results in last minute cancellations of other sectors, most of which are in Kerala. So before we blame AI Express, we must remember they are a govt owned airline and therfore have to meet govt demands. The govt is elected by the PEOPLE, not by AI Express!!!! So the people should question the Govt. not AI Express!!

    BOYCOTT AIR INDIA.
DONT DEPEND ON IT . THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT IT REACHES AND LEAVE IN TIME.

AND ALSO NEED TO CHANGE THE NAME INTO 'HARASS INDIA '

Each one staying abroad has to put a memorandum to Indian Embassy or Consulate nearest you asking for granting permission for International Flight operators like , GULF AIR , EMIRATES , THAI AIRWAYS, SINGAPORE AIRLINES, JET AIR ETC and also economical flights like Jazeera Air, ETHIHAD AIRLINES,

I assume this is the price Congress paid through Air India for Mulayam Singhs support as it seems the reason given by authorities is that several aircraft had been shifted to Uttar Pradesh for the benefit of Haj pilgrims from the northern Indian state at the cost of trauma to the NRKs. This is nothgin but Goondaraj, first charge exhorbent charges for Gulf bound passengers for a worst service any flier can get and without any intimation, flights are diverted like KSRTC buss's. "Helor keloru yaaru Illa". I think This is why Emirates and Etihad anounced last week that Unless they give us full control of operations along with 49% stakes, we are not sure of investing in any Indian carrier, because half the money they may pump in might "SWAHA" by our Golmaal Govt and the reputation of the original carrier also might be in stake if they allowed these people to manage Indian Avaiation Industry with foreign funds.
