Mangalore Bishop Persuades Government to Recognize Catholic Youth

Fr Francis Rodrigues, Raknno

Mangalore, Sep 23: Bishop of Mangalore Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza on Sunday September 23 made an emphatic appeal to union youth affairs and sports ministry to recognize the Catholic youth of India and to make sufficient use of the country's Catholic youth force.

He was speaking at the Bishop’s House to Saleem Mohammad, the national director general of Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK) that takes care of the youth across the nation under the guidance of union youth affairs and sports ministry.

"The Catholic youth power of India is recognized by the number of youth bodies across the world but they are still strangers in the Indian youth affairs ministry," the prelate said, adding, "Avail the strong active youth force of the Catholic Church for your programmes."

"There are more than one million active Catholic youth across the nation but we are not made a part of the secular national youth force," said Fr Alwyn D’Souza, former national Catholic youth director of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India.

Three pressing requests were placed before the NYK – for government recognition of the registered body of Youth Active Foundation of the Catholic youth of India, to incorporate the Catholic youth in the youth policy making proceedings of the government of India and to support with resources the society-oriented programmes organized by the Catholic youth across the nation.

Saleem Mohammad assured positive response to the youth-oriented demands of the Catholic Church and invited Catholic youth to the national youth festival to be held in November this year. "I am very pleased to know the great Catholic youth force and the vibrant involvement it has in the youth-oriented programmes," said Saleem.

Out of the 122 crore population of India, 49.2 crores (41%) are below 30 years of age.

According to Saleem Mohammad three lac NYK units have been registered in 623 districts across the nation.

Diocesan PRO Fr William Menezes, South Kanara District NYK coordinator Cecil J F D’Souza, Ivan D’Souza, Stany Alvares, Denis D’Silva, Naveen D’Souza, Nazir Bajal, Sudhir T.K., Kripa Alva, Tejaswi Raj and others were present on the occasion.

First of all a big thanks to our beloved Bishop and all others those who are trying to uplift our catholic youth of India. Its a cherish able moment but we have long way to go. We have more then 1.3 million registered catholic youth in India but there are many more who are not yet recognized. We have 'Youth Activ8 Foundation(R)' which is catering the youth of our nation without any cast and creed in 13 Regions and 166 Dioceses. Thanks for this precious move now we have to tack forward this mission...............
    with regards

The move of our Bishop is appriciated. It is my experience that more than 80% of our youths are going to gulf countries in search of employment. Very meagre percentage of christian youths are working in India in Government departments and that is decreasing day by day. In the recent years some youths are going to Australia or USA after finishing their engineering. Therefore it is need of the hour to encourage our christian youths to get employment here in India so that we will be recognised in the society.

    Good move by Bihop H.E.
It is much awaited move and it is the need of the hour.
I also suggest that, we need to prepare our youths to join 'POLICE FORCE" and also IAS, so that some adminstrative post our youth shd hv then we can live in peace and harmony.
There r much talented youths are there among christians but they need the backing of seniors to come forward and i know we can do that thru avilable services.
I wish all youths on India to join this and strengthen the UNITY, so that the coming GENERATION live in PEACE, HARMONY AND LOVING'
    GOD BLESS EVERY ONE

Being 41% of our population is below 30 years of age, we have a strong youth power force which is the wealth and light of our nation.
Unless our youth are properly energized and inspired in right direction, perhaps they become a dumped, unexploited and hidden treasure.
In order to support the cause, we really need an adequate source of finance.

In fact, we are spending lavishly, (billions of dollars) on oil imports. If we save at least 50% from expensive fuel imports, by applying a new concept in our vehicles, we can have enormous funds to encourage and employ our youth power, to see the real light and shine.

This also will help the land transportation to keep face with the revolutionized telecommunication, (by breaking the lengthy automobile evolution).
It is an opportunity to enjoy a clean and peaceful environment by eliminating of air pollution and sound pollution by vehicles.
A unique thought which can make a world of difference.

I pity. It's not that Catholic christians have to beg to be noticed, but by our works... Giving opportunity to SAME people always will not bring the growth. Same heads that appear in ALL photos can't be leaders, but the one who really works for the growh of the people.

Very well said, dear Bishop Aloysius, on behalf of more than one million active Catholic Youth of India.
Kind and polite messages of this kind go a long way in reaching the hearts and minds of so many Dignitaries in so many circles of our Civic society in India.

At the same time, our Catholic Youth also must take all the initiatives to move forward and participate in so many occasions that involve so many social, educational and religious, and even political gatherings and voice our humble opinion on so many issues that relate the youth of our country as well as our world.

We have indulged in so many philanthropic activities such as an International Library, International Orientation Club as well as International Institute for Public Policy, and also the Toastmasters Club, and we should be humble enough to confess that the support from our Catholic Youth has been quite negligible as compared to the overwhelming support from other groups. We do not know why but that is our humble and candid experience.

We have to therefore raise our flag high enough, as professionally as possible, so that our voices are well heard and our presence is well recognized. This is the beauty of democracy and the power of secular values.
