Belthangady, Sep 30: As many as 5000 youth  from across the state, one archbishop, 13 bishops from  Karnataka and more than 100 priests,  nuns and political leaders witnessed the concluding ceremony of ‘Karnataka Yuvajanostava-2012’  held at  Holy Redeemer Church, Belthangady on Sunday, September 2012.

Addressing thousands of youth, Ronald Colaco, NRI entrepreneur and philanthropist said, “In India even though Christians are in minority our contribution in the field of education, health care and social service is commendable when compared to the contributions of any other community.  Earlier during the gurukula system education was the privilege of   only the rich and the powerful.  Due to the efforts of the missionaries education was available to the common people”.

He further added: “India’s progress is always linked to the progress we have achieved in the field of education.  Christian missionaries have been pioneers in  providing education to the masses.  Regrettably, the government has failed to recognize the selfless   services rendered by the community.  It failed to show its gratitude by giving due administrative positions in the government to Christians”.

Colaco also pointed out that even though we have many Christian institutions people of other communities have been given adequate representation,  whereas not even 1% of people from Christian Community enjoy such  status in representations in other institutions.

Referring to the cases of atrocities against minorities he said that Christian community has been facing lot of problems at various levels and we are unable to find a quick solution to them.  “Lack of representation from our community in politics, administration and in the judiciary has been our undoing.  We have to encourage more and more youngsters to get into these streams”, he stated.

On the occasion Colaco announced the formation of a “Corpus Fund” of Rs. 3 crore (one crore each for 3 consecutive years)  in the name of a Trust.  The interest accrued from this will be solely utilized to financially assist IAS, IPS and KAS aspirants from the community through scholarships.

Colaco also gave a clarion call to the youth to join politics in order to empower the community.   “It is high time Christians take part willingly in the political field.  We have to contest in elections starting from grassroots level like gram panchayats and taluk level elections.  Politics, bureaucracy and Judiciary are the ‘hot seats’ of power”, Colaco pointed out.  ,

In his presidential address, Rev Bernard Moras, Archbishop of Bangalore called upon the youth to take the initiative of inculcating leadership qualities in them and thereby build the church and nation at large.

Appreciating the contributions of Christian missionaries, Dr M Verrappa Moily, minister of power, Govt of India said, “During my young days, it was the Christian nuns and priests who encouraged me to study hard and take up the mantle of leadership”.  Moily also stated that where there is a church, there is a school to disseminate education or an ashram to care for the poor which shows the service mind of the people of the community”.

Encouraging Christians to excel in all fields Moily said “India is very young in age; we have lot of human resource and youth form a sizeable chunk of these human resources.  Naturally our productivity should have been more as compared to other states where they lack such wealth of young human resource”. Moily also called upon the youth to take active interest in politics.

Vincent Pala, minister of state for water resources and minority affairs, Govt of India said, “It’s your nation, your democracy, therefore, your participation matters the most”.

MP Oscar Fernandes also spoke highlighting the power of youth and the need to make the best use of this vital resource of youth power.  Vasanth Bangera, member of legislative assembly, Belthangady also spoke at the occasion.

During the occasion, outstanding young achievers were honored with Karnataka Catholic Yuva Rathna Award. Award were presented to Cajetan Karwar, Roshan Ferao Mangalore, Roshan Ouseph Mandya, Jose Jacob Bangalore, Sabitha Monis Mangalore and Don Bosco,  Tech Karnataka, NGO organization Bangalore. These five achievers were felicitated for their distinctive achievements at a young age.   Don Bosco Tech received the honor for serving the poor and illiterate youth to provide them with better employment opportunities.

Along with the Archbishop, as many as 13 bishops shared the dais along with the office-bearers of youth organizations. Bishops Henry D’Souza of Bellary, Lawrence Mukkuzhy of Belthangady, Geevarghese Mar Divannasios of Puttur, Joseph Arumachadath of Badravathi, Peter Machado of Belgaum, Thomasappa Anthony Swamy of Chickmangalore, Robert Miranda of Gulbarga, Deric Fernandes of Karwar, Aloysius Paul D’Souza of Mangalore, George Nijaralakkatt of Mandya, Thomas Vazhapally of Mysore and Jerald Isaac Lobo of Shimoga diocese witnessed the splendid youth convention.

In addition, Ramanath Rai, MLA, Muguli Narayan Rao, president of town panchayath, Belthangady, J R Lobo, Vinay Kumar Sorake, Fr James D’Souza, parish priest of Belthangady, Fr Franklin D’souza and others were present on the dais.

The formal function was followed by a live concert by Kevin Misquith. The occasion also saw the launching of  CCBI youth commission website. Fr Marie Joseph, Secretery, KRCBC youth commission welcomed the dignitaries and the gathering.

Earlier, Vincent Pala flagged off the peace march from Belthagady town which then proceeded to the church. As many as 5000 youth participated in the peace march singing patriotic slogans.

The convention named as “Karnataka Yuvajanotsava-2012” was organized by the youth commission of Karnataka Regional Catholic Bishop’s Council and locally hosted by the Indian Catholic Youth Movement of the Diocese of Belthangady. The theme of the convention is ‘Transformed by Faith- Transforming the world’, ‘Networking human dignity, employability, caring for the earth’.

Talking to daijiworld on the sidelines of the convention on how he would manage the Trust for the progress of youth, Ronald Colaco pointed out that the Trust would be headed by a widely knowledgeable person who will be assisted by other committee members.  The members of the Trust would choose suitable candidates for awarding the scholarships.  He also stated that awareness would be created in the state including in the rural areas about the scholarship so that right and needy candidates will be able to avail the scholarship to get an opportunity to answer the most competitive exams of Civil Services.

During the last two days, various young leaders enlightened  the sessions on various topics such as youth identity in the socio-cultural context of   today and  their response, young achievers and such other topics.

The three day convention concluded with a solemn thanksgiving Holy mass, presided over by the Rev Bernard Moras, Archbishop of Bangalore and concelebrated by the catholic bishops of Karnataka.

Congratulations to Mr. Ronald Colaco. You are great. Corpus fund of Rs. 3 crores over a period of three years should definetly make impact on the minds of Youth. Identifying the youth who has inclination for civil services may not be difficult if our society, particularly the clergy devotes some attention towards this. It is not one year programme. The church can play a big role in this respect. Motivating the youngsters has to become easy. There is hardly any scholarship for higher studies among christian community. All other community provide scholarship. You are doing a great service to the community. Hats off to you. Wish you all the best in your missionary work.

Money can be used in many ways. Many people including some community leaders and politicians today are busy training the youth or setting youth organisations to divide our nation on communal ,religious, regional and liguistic lines. They are busy training youth from their communities on how to start riots ,how to destroy other communities ..in one word I can say how to destroy the unity of our country ..I call on all such people to take a look at what MR COLALACO IS DOING WITH HIS RESOURCES..AND TO TAKE LESSONS FROM HIS DEEDS.Mr Colaco we need people like you to build this great country and encourage the youth towards nation building..GOD BLESS YOU.

I hope many of our community youth take IAS,IPS, KAS, KPSC exams & also join politics to hold critical positions as we are capable of. I studied in prestigious Catholic Institution of Mangalore, Jesuits are very good mentors, they never discriminate. We Christians should appreciate Mr. Ronald Colaco effort's, may God Bless him and his family abundantly. This is really something we have to think about, that there is only one man in the christian community to help the christians. May be there are many who want to do something but are unable to come forward, now atleast they can give a helping hand to Mr. Colaco.

Regarding the christian youth we should identify the talent's of the youth at a very young age in every Church from where they can be trained further in the diocease. I dont know how it can be done, but all the fields Sport's, leadership, Education, Speaker's and other Extra Curricular activities should be looked into. We can see Coorg a very small district in Karnataka which has given the Country many service personal's with Generals.

This is a great achievement for such a small place. We always boast of our education and the intitutes of the coastal area, but to be frank with this much fecilities we have achieved very little. There is a saying in India " What South Calcutta thinks today West Bengal thinks Tomorrow and rest of India the day after" I would like this to be changed to " what Mangaloreans think and do today rest of the Indian's do tommorrow". Hope our youth will realize this and put their mind to some productive cause in every field.

A project for Training the youths for civil services is really excellent idea. It was badly required since very long time. Thank you Colaco sir.
Now if you see IAS & IPS officers of Karnataka, majority belong to north India, where there is very good facility for training youths for IAS-IPS. Even Andhra has set up very good facility for the same after Chandrababu Naidu became Chief Minister, but in karnataka no one took such initiative.
How is that maximum number of Biharis are capturing Civil Services ?? Because even though Bihar is very backward, still they have some very good private institutions who are specialized in training youths for such posts, and such coaching classes are run by Retired IAS-IPS-IFS officers. North Indians have one advantage, that is they can give civil service exams & Interviews only in Hindi.

Secondly, even though People of Coastal area have best physics which is equal to Coorgis, still very few youths prefer to join Militry/ Para-Military forces, due to lack of proper guidance, whareas in Kodagu the youths get proper guidance before appearing for Physical Test & Interview. So more Kodava youths can join Militry/Navy/Air-force. So our Mangalore also requires proper coaching centre for youths aspiring to join Military/Para-Military. We can observe that in Mangalore Airport & New Mangalore Harbour only Hindiwala Guards are employed. They got jobs in Para-Military (Industrial Security force) in Karnataka, only because Karnataka youths did not compete for these post due to lack of guidance.

My gratitude to Mr. Colaco for creating 'Corpus Fund' an autonomous arrangement unlike all our existing charity and social organizations. It may be recalled that any registered social organization, NGO or charity center is bound by a government regulation that they must serve the people without religious bias. But, Corpus Fund, since being a private/personal entity, will have the liberty to help our own youth.

Let there be christian members in Civil Services as a blessing from Mr. Colaco. We have examples of very bright students excelling in pertinent examinations but pulling off due to irregularities and corruption. Those who did dare to go on are restrained by political powers or take up fraudulent means to cover the bribes paid to secure a position. I look forward to brave future generation to break this barrier and serve the nation honestly because they will owe their status to Corpus Fund.

I thank a personality as great as Mr. Colaco, from the bottom of my heart for his generosity.

I am sending you my email id and cell number to your office email id, please advise me how and where to transfer my amount.

Also my comittment will remain valid, only if the Trust leadership is taken exclusively by LAY person.

We need to set up a training school in line of Seminary for potential IAS/IPS candidates where they can be trained in leadership, courage, dedication, righteousness and other virtues needed for such positions.

Late J.M. Lobo Prabhu was one of the top ranked ICS officers who never let a politician, even the Prime Minister Nehru, walk over him. Julio Rebeiro was another example for integrity, courage and righteousness.

Now-a-days the dignity of IAS/IPS position has come down because the officers are dancing to the tunes of some of the corrupt, criminal and incompetent politicians.

Training school, if established, will certainly bring out many more Lobo Prabhus and Julio Rebeiros.

Mr.Colaco for your you are blessed by god.If every youth can make the effort to bag the govt, political, judiciary position it will be a great succcess and reward for Christian community and the same token India will prosper in a way less corruption and more transparent in govt services. As we all know Christians are not intersted in corruptions, they like to offer better services from heart regardless of whom they offer those services which are given honestly and equall basis as every one should enjoy. Getting such opportunities are difficult from our current govt who is corrupt, unfair, bais, and descriminative towards christians. Still we christians openely helping all without descrimiantion that is what Jesus ask us to do. God bless your help to our youth and sure they will make you proud

Congratulations to youth commission of Karnataka Regional Catholic Bishop’s Council and local host Indian Catholic Youth Movement of the Diocese of Belthangad for successfully organizing and delivering timely leadership message to our young generation. Job well done and hope the suggested message delivered during the Utsova continues to be implemented in coming months.

Mr. Ronald Coalaco you have been blessed for being instrumental in helping many of the issues in our society and social concerns. We thank you for your generous financial support and hope that planned trust will inspire several thoushands to come forward to prepare for IAS/ IPC / KAS exams. Please include National Defense Academy (NDA) and Indian Military Academy (IMA) exam prepartion also in the scope of the planned trust. I had appeared for NDA exam in Bangalore and this prepartion along experience and follow up during Service ion Board (SSB) interview was very helpful in latter years during my professional carrer.

One possible area that may help for effective communication is to develop and dedicate a website for the planned trust so that available links for IAS/ KAS/ IPS / NDA/ IMA exams are listed along with available resources with due consideration copyright of books and other documents. Those who are intrested may be able to add additional links and resources through the web based inquiry and s.

We may be able to use the Bishops House based resources and youth related organization for promoting candidates and to provide initial counselling to understand the initial details.

We wish the best for the planned trust and supporting activities.

Great event and my hats off to the organizers of this mega event. My sincere thanks to Ronald Colaco who is the only leader among Mangaloreans who cares and shares his wealth for the betterment of future leaders irrespective of caste, creed and religion. If we had similar supporting leaders, who encourage youth to climb the ladder of success, we whould have several politicians, ministers, government officials, judges, etc., etc. Now is the time and an golden opportunity to our youth to come forward and go for success in life and lead our community to a higher standard and strong power. May God bless Ronald Colaco and keep in good health.

Infact,Undivided DK/Udupi Students are less inclined towards IAS/IPS/KAS which is a cause of concerne.Mangalorean students are mostly persuing MBBS/ENGG/MBA and other techinical related courses.Mr Colaco's 'Corpus Fund'indeed will help to bring Christian youths to train competitive exams of top admin jobs in State as well as in the nation.Mr Colaco's innovative and progressive thinking would bring other communities to think that way, particularly, Muslims leaders/bussinessmen give a thought and follow the footstep of Mr Colaco.Well done Mr Colaco good work and keep going.
