Bangalore, Oct 1 (PTI): Protests against release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu continued for the second day today with authorities deciding to deploy Rapid Action Force to maintain peace in Mandya, the epi-centre of the stir, even as four JD(S) MLAs and an MP submitted resignations to the party state unit chief to protest the government action.

Lending their political might to the agitation, the four JD(S) MLAs and an MP submitted resignations to H D Kumaraswamy to protest the BJP government's action to release water complying with a Supreme Court order.

Authorities said they have decided to deploy RAF to assist police in the wake of escalating protests.

More than 100 people were arrested at Gejjalagere in Mandya district, the hotbed of Cauvery politics, when they blocked the Shirdi express train, police said.

Protests continued in Mysore, Chamarajanagar and Mandya, the Cauvery basin districts. Vehicular movement on the Bangalore-Mysore road was hit for the third day, police said.

JD(S) Lok Sabha member from Mandya N Cheluvarayaswamy and its four MLAs from Mandya district -- Kalpana Siddaraju, C S Puttaraju, M Srinivas and A B Ramesh Bandisidddegowda submitted their resignation letters to Kumaraswamy.

Speaking to reporters here, Kumaraswamy said a meeting of party MLAs and MPs has been convened tomorrow to decide the future course of action, including whether all its legislators should quit en masse.

JD(S), which draws its core strength mainly from the Cauvery belt, has 26 MLAs and three MPs in the state.

Criticising the BJP government for releasing Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu when its farmers are facing acute shortage, Kumaraswamy said, "Our party has decided that MLAs from Mandya district will quit".

Former Prime Minister and JD(S) chief H D Devegowda has sought an appointment today with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to explain the hardship faced by people of Cauvery basin.

Bowing to the Apex Court order, Karnataka began releasing water from Krishna Raja Sagar and Kabini dams early yesterday to ensure flow of 9,000 cusecs.

Defending the decision, Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar said on Sunday it was "inevitable" to honour the court order, but the state was committed to protect farmers' interests.
He had also said government would file a petition before the Supreme Court, seeking a review of its order asking the state to honour the September 19 Cauvery River Authority directive to release 9,000 cusecs to Tamil Nadu till Oct 15.

Karnataka has already urged Prime Minister, who is also the CRA Chairman, to review its Sept 19 order and keep it in abeyance till the decision was reviewed.

If the Appa / Maga party has any realconcern for Karnataka, then they should withdraw the support to the UPA govt. All this drama of resigning and handing the letters to their leader is drama. If they are serious, please give the resiganation letter to the speaker and surrender all their perks and priveleges.

In any case it does not matter anything to the common man, as these legislators and the MP have not or not contributing anything in the functioning of the legislature for which we have elected them specifically. They meant for themselves and their families only. Actually by resigning their posts, they have helped the country save some money, as they occupy these posts the more illegal money they strive to earn!!

While the affected farmers are crying for justice and the 4 MLAs resigned in support of them, and as protest to Shutter's cunning actions, Shutter is cooling his heels and shedding crocodile tears at Amasibail Police post!!

    What a irony!!

Entire BJP govt. must resign, as Yeddy was the first one who took oath in the name of farmers and started to plunder the natural wealth of our beloved Karnataka.

Shutter, you must resign right away.

    Stupidity,

First of all, No one can stop flowing water. It is a natural resource for all the mankind. Neither Central or State Government producing it.

IF these MLA, MP wants really resign, then they should submit the letter direct to Speaker, Governor or President. Whom they are fooling by submitting it to Their god father

This is purely a political stunt. Can any party overtake the Supreme Court Order. All Parties are bound to the judgment, & here hectically JDS & Congress is trying to take mileage, by misdirecting the innocent public. In past, S M Krishna had done padayatra, & assured people that he will not let water to TN, but eventually he had to go by Court Order. If these people want to protest let them fight in Court with their greivances & not damage to public transport.

Except the ruling Govt which is at simple majority, hense cannot afford to make their MLA's resign, JDS & Congress can resign as many as their MLA's in this political Gimmick. This is just playing politics in Cauvery's name and not that they are concerned for the people of the belt. I bet half of the people you see in the streets might not even know what actually is Supreme Courts verdict or how much water is left. Drank 2 packets in the morning and doing this Domabaraata along with some jobless kannada cini artists who's upcoming movies are to be released soon so that they want publicicty in the streets and creating law & order problem. Instead people & Govt should encorage and understand the concept of rain water harvesting so that the state may bear famine for a year or so even if there is no rains. In political point of view, this cauvery issue is sure to come up as a trump card for all parties during upcoming state elections.
