24 Injured as Miraj-Hubli Train Derails Near Belgaum

Bangalore, Oct 1 (IANS): At least 24 people were injured Monday evening when the engine and four coaches of a passenger train derailed near Belgaum in Karnataka after a portion of the rail track was washed away in flash floods, a railway official said.

The accident spot is about 620 km from Bangalore.

"The incident occurred between Sulebhavi and Suldhal stations when the Miraj-Hubli passenger train was passing through the spot in heavy rain. About 10 metres of the track got dislocated due to flash floods resulting in four bogies and the engine derailing," South Western Railway spokesman G.K. Jalan told IANS on phone.

Clarifying that there were no deaths, Jalan said about 20 of the injured passengers have been taken to Belgaum and Gokak for treatment.

Unconfirmed reports, however, said three passengers died in the mishap.

After South Western Railway was formed and the Head quarters was shifted from Bangalore to Hubli, the administration is very loose. All those north Indian utives, instead of remaining in Hubli Head-quarters, most of the times, they are found in Bangalore or Delhi. All these people have kept their family in Bangalore and freely shuttling between Hubli & Bangalore by Railway.
Thanks to Jaffer sheriff this Hubli-Miraj line was converted to Broad Gauge but maintenance of Track is very Slack due to those north Indian higher Staff. Belgaum is high rainfall area. Hence, this accident near Sulebhavi-Suledhal in Belgaum dist. My Brother is Railway employee in Hubli division, so I know the horrible conditions created by these Northies.

Rail Minsister Muniyappa should resign immediately taking moral responsibility. This is what happens if dumb people are elevated to higher post. He may not be knowing train runs on track. JP hegde should replace him.

Portion of the rail track was washed away in flash floods ? Railway have no maintenance /Advance warning systems in place ? Why the officials had NO ANTICIPATION, when the area is prone to floods ? Negligent officials/authorities are playing on innocent HUMAN LIFE! Are any POLITICAL PARTIES/ GROUPS concerned and taking up the issues with authorities to avert such incidents taking place in future ? Are they concerned of humans well being ? If media does not highlight, such issues will go UN- noticed by rest of the world and go UN-attended !

Dislocation of 10 mtrs of track is not a joke. Track maintainance authorities should be held responsible. Frequent safe check and measures should have been adopted in potential high risk areas.
