Sullia: Now, Subramanyeshwara College Bans Burkha on Campus

Sullia: Burkha Issue - DC Asks KSS College to Revoke Ban

Daijiworld Media Network – Sullia (VM)

Update

Sullia, Oct 2: In the wake of reports on the ban of burkha inside the KSS College, Subramanya, deputy commissioner Dr Channappa Gowda intervened in the matter and asked the College management to revoke the ban and maintain a status quo on the issue.

Speaking to Daijiworld, the DC said that he met the management and asked them to maintain the earlier rule, which allowed Muslims girls to wear burkha in the campus but not in the classroom.

It is learnt that the students and parents so far had adhered to the rule on not wearing the burkha inside the classroom, but were unforcomfortable with the new diktat about removing it outside the campus on the roadside.

Earlier Report

Kukke Shri Subramanyeshwara (KSS) College which is run by Kukke Subramanya temple administration has decided to ban burkha on its campus.

The temple administration has ordered the students to remove their burkha before entering the college campus.

The total strength of the college is 280 boys and 685 girls pursuing BCom, BBM, BA and others. Among them seven Muslim girls are from the final year, five from the second year and three from the first year.

Now, because of the implementation of this rule, girls have to remove their burkha outside the college itself.

A student said that the move is a matter of shame to the students as trespassers watch them, and make fun of them while they remove their burkha on the roadside.

Commenting on the new rule passed by the temple administration, taluk panchayat member Vimala Rangayya said that the administration is not doing justice to the students. "This is not a matter of religion," she said assuring full support to the students.

She also warned of protest if the college does not withdraw the ban in a few days.

In respect to the above ordinance passed by the college administration, Venkat Dambekodi, BJP leader assured full support on their behalf.

He said that the Congress parties without understanding the truth are trying to create unrest in the college.

Speaking on behalf of temple administration, he said the students are made to wear uniform inside the campus mainly to ensure equality and discipline in the institution, but opposition parties are using the issue for political gains.

He said the institution is not under the influence of any political party and has created good atmosphere for students till date. As Congress members are ready to protest against this, BJP members along with other Hindu organizations will also hold a protest, he added.

I dont think Burkha should be banned. Instead teachers can ask them to show their faces for identification before entering the class rooms which is allowed in Islam. Thus problem can be solved amicably both management and student will be happy. Why unncessary create tentions?

The matter here is not the uniform issue. It is a purposeful act of humiliation to insist a Muslim girl to change her burqa in the roadside, outside the school campus. It is a shame on the college and its management! Even St. Aloysius has this rule, but they dont ask the students to change their burqa outside the campus, only outside the clas room.

OMG!!! Its like now every year this drama is taking place! y dont the girls or guys just cant respect the school uniform rules & regulations,y do they simply create nuissance! just if those gals have to go to college let them go, one who cannot respect the code of college, not just create confusion...and the managment let the girls change thier dress in ladies room or say a place for them to remove burkha.
In mangalore girls use burkha to hide themselves!so many girls just wear it when going out with guys to hide them self. y just they dont concentrate on studies, they r going for study!just maintain uniformity.... And mayor can enter college coz its for students the code is patternized to look equal not an guest or outsider! respect the dress code

Have you read the rules and regulation of that college???

If wearing burkha is banned, why did they allow all these days???

I ask you the same question: Why after getting admission, they (college administration) start all this nonsense?

Try and understand the problem here... its now about students being asked to remove their burkha outside the campus in the street, in public!

Students didnt use to wear it while in the classroom.

The authority should allow Muslim girl students to wear purdah till the classroom but during the college hours they should not wear purdah again until they leave the campus.
As far as the approach of the International Human Rights Law standards is concerned, the debates on the wearing of headscarf by Muslim women could be analysed from the following three-fold dimension of rights, namely freedom of thought, conscience and religion, freedom from discrimination and the right to education and work. Supporters of the right to wear the Islamic headscarf argue that the ban and similar prohibitions infringe a number of human rights.
According to International Human Rights Law, everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion this right includes…freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in worship, teaching, practice and observance.”
The right to education is recognised in many major human rights instruments, including the Convention on the Rights of the Child 1989. UNICEF has recently reported that millions of children worldwide are still denied the basic right to education - with gender disparity ensuring that the majority of those children (65 million) are girls. Perhaps it is then ironic that the ban on headscarves in public schools will deny girls access to education.

Before getting admission, everyone has to read the regulations of the college, school or any other educational institution.
If it is specifically mentioned, certain type of attire is not allowed in the college, school premises, then those get admission have already agreed to the rules.
Why after getting admission, they start all this nonsense.
Those who do not want to adhere to the rules, can go to colleges, school where it is allowed.
Why make a hue and cry here.

It is humiliating the women whether its minority or majority asking them to remove the BURKHA/dress on the streets/roads instead of campus. These girls are removing burkha in the campus are also not acceptable but somehow it is manageable being a human being management/admin of school should provide changing room instead of campus. Political parties are creating problems in and around the peoples though out Karntaka and also India only for the vote bank to loot the country’s wealth and hatredness among the peoples and spoil the brotherhood between the communities. But now a days educational institutions are joining hands with the political parties to spoil the innocent students carrier/life educational institutions should not join the hands with the political parties. Timely DC’s intervention is highly appreciable before the situation is going out of control.

We have lot of other issues to be sorted out i.e. devoloping strong infrastructure , bring people out of poverty and take the India to new height. All we have to work together as one body to achieve these goals. Hating each other on some issues is not worthy at this time then again we go 10 years back. Whenever people respect each others religion then above goals can be achieve and peace prevails. If we see past history, nation/humans destroyed on the basis of hatred on nationality, caste, rascism, color etc. We need to overcome all this problem to take India to a strong and developed nation.

There should be dress code for college students. Wearing burkha was not allowed even in christian school when I was a in school. Muslim students used to remove their burkha in/outside the school main gate. Even in Mumbai burkha is not allowed in any of the school/colleges. Subramanyeshwara college should provide a place for the muslim students to remove thier burkha and hang the same so that they can wear after college. Keep way all the political parties to make it as an issue out of this. If we all follow his ideology there is no hurdle that cannot be adjusted amicably with one another. What we needed is little give and take, so that neither the college rules nor the religious sentiments are hurt.

Its’ become passion for making issue not because of religious fervor but tit for tat attitude of Political Parties. If these Girls Parents become too religious, either they will ask their daughters to stay at home where by depriving education to these girls or they have to travel more distance to seek admission in another College. Any rule which is in the College prospectus during admission should be followed by all students. This new rule should have done for next academic year, may not be this year as the students who wear burqa insides the college campus are now in dilemma whether to continue or not.

Here I completely blame the College management for bringing this rule in between this academic year, not during admission time. My question those who oppose is very simple. In a college which is run by muslim majid, suddenly in the middle of the academic year, they bring notice saying all girls students should wear hizab ( covering the face) in the college campus, how they will react. Every coin has 2 sides, let us respect each other, Formulate rules before the admission not in the middle of the academic year.

yes one thing I forgot to mention here i.e while implementing any directives or any rules management of the school or college must keep it in mind that other religion students are also coming for an admission and honor and respect their tradition.if they don't agree or don't like their practice students must be intimidated at the time of admission itself. Not in between. In the midst of academic year any such incidents/issues are raised students future is spoiled.Don't do that.Whatever the college/schools norms/rules are there must be mentioned in the college prospectus so that any student think about joining the particular college/school.Just to please any particular political party or segment please don't put the students future in peril/danger.They are innocent.Don't succumb to any political game or pressure.Coz we are in secular country.Don't be the victim of any political parties. They want to play political game no matter whether it is students or anybody else coz of ensuing election. About religious rules, fine. Recently Saudi arabia said that it will deport any other religion people found eating or drinking in public places during Ramadan. No other religion people staying ther objected. Ajmaan made new policy for marriage certificate document. It is one of the pathetic one. Still, if you want to stay there and earn then follow the rule of that country. In the same way, if you want the same college then follow the rules. No religion should come in the way. If anyone deeply attached with that then better stay away from socialised institution and join the same religion college. Every matter of concern have the alternative ways.

If the Management wants to ban the Burka they should have informed the students when they came for admission. So they have a chance to change the colleges were Burka is allowed. its not fair to implement the rule middle of the academic year and it will be difficult for the Muslim girl students suddenly to come without Burka in front of male students.

These students were wearing Burka entire life it is Muslims culture. If the management is talking about uniform and equality then they should allow Hindu students to wear Bindhi, safron rops and nuns to wear thier dress then shows the equality or else it just hurting some ones sentiments

Not a big deal..what can a minority expect from "SUBRAMANYA TEMPLE" ADMINISTRATION. One thing is very clear with such decisions which divides the communities and leads towards extremism.

Do you have guts to ask the mayor to remove her head scarf at MCC Mangalore? Then why you force the younger generation. This will only create enmity and havoc.

Following one's college norms it is the best interest of the students and to thier study too. Education and religion should not be mixed and that of politics too!. Education is a foundation to our future and foundation should not be a question mark in anyway? . The college administration should have its own norms before one's admission. The students who joined earlier should continue thier education wihout interferene and the required implementation should be amended gradually and periodically.

You fundamentalists, please read the history books and see who started secular education system in India. The people who made churches, hospitals and schools never asked anyone to remove the head scarf or wipe out the forehead nama’s.
The people who built churches and schools had only one objective that is to provide secular education and every one is equal irrespective of caste and creed.
These fanatics only started few schools and colleges later in mid 21 century by raising funds from public promoted education only for higher castes, whiter skin and the lower caste was discarded.
Now they realized the mistakes they made in the past and with the public funds and government aid some schools and colleges mushroomed. But they use these institutions to create a awareness that they are different and they can bend rules.

I fail to understand why this issue is being surfaced every now and then from different corner of the state? All these rules were in place without any problem why all of a sudden this so called political parties creating problems?Do they think about the academic future of the students?Do they want to play on the life of students by provoking like this?Wearing uniform inside the campus is the right decision taken by the college management in order to maintain equality and discipline amongst the students. What is wrong in it?Besides it is clearly mentioned in the prospectus of the college before their admission. If anybody is objecting why the parents allowed their wards to get an admission in the college and they would have preferred other colleges where such restrictions are not there. Why only now in between?.These are all political parties vote bank gimmick. This rule is not meant only to certain segments of the society. This is applicable to all regardless of caste, religion, language and colour in the best interest of students as well as college management. Why to oppose. Those who oppose let them find their way out from this college. Those who are supporting let them think twice before extending any help or support.Just for the sake of politicasl mileage?what a shame it is?I ask one question with the people who support this move one fine morning if any student other than muslim stundet come with only loin cloth or any other objectionable dress will you support this or if any one of you run the college or school will you accept all these nonsenses?.

They are indirectly challenging and discouraging a Muslim girl from seeking education. The same people who are against having madarasa education in our country. Then where shall a Muslim girl will have her right of education?
The elections are near and the fundamentalists are coming with innovative ideas to create the different wave. The only one agenda is ‘party with difference’. The only slogan is ‘we are a party from the majority community’. The principles are so strong that ,these leaders who are so called king makers do not change the ideology even by highest level of education. They do not agree with the history that states that these waves ruined our country for centuries now.
The Girls should continue the stir and seek more support from the society and continue education and face these challenges. Do not forget that the unity of womanhood can shake the entire system.

If the college move is to ensure equality among the student then it is acceptable. But they should allow student to enter the campus with burkha bcz girls removing thier abhaya in the road side does not look nice. college has to provide a safer changing room for these girls. I hope this ban is not inspired by political parties.

Elections are fast approaching and politicians will try to divide the public in the name of religion and do the vote bank politics.
I agree uniformity should be there inside the class room but why now ( middle of the year), they should highlight this in college prospectus and implement the rule from the beginning of the academic year so that students have the choice of ing the college.
I believe this is the second college implementing this rule in 2012. Jaago Muslims Jaago, have your own educational institutions, let everybody (people belonging to all religion) get benefits from this institutions with the independence of practicing their religious obligations.

In many muslim run institutions in Kasargaod, the uniform consists of a plain salwar kameez with the pallu (shawl) on the head. There is no burkha. Why similar arrangement cannot be followed by all institutions and agreed by Muslim leaders?
It is highly undesirable if muslims migrate to schools run exclusively by muslims and for muslims as the seggregation between communities will widen further.
By the way, about three decades back, muslims women used to wear a very nice looking beary dress with embridered blouse, and a head scarf worn similar to Kashmiris. You don't see it now as Burkha has replaced it (gulf influence?)

Good decesion by the college. Anyone can enter the college by wearing a Burkha and create trouble. The college has rightly asked the ladies to remove the Burkha before entering the college. The students need to respect the decesion and not create unnecessary issues.

Wearing Burkha, Hiding identity and entering the college illegally by some unauthorised persons laid the college management to take this decision. There is nothing wrong in this decision but the college admn has to allocate some safer place to the students to change their Burkha.

The authorities should have brought this rule before the beginning of the academic year. We do not know the exact reason for this ruling, as the management might have a justification. At the moment, at least let these girls come inside the premises and remove the burka. Please do not humiliate them by asking them to remove on the roadside.

Since college has made a rule to wear uniform inside the campus mainly to ensure equality and discipline in the institution which all the students have to obey the rule, But i think one of the student rightly said "trespassers watch them, and make fun of them while they remove their burkha on the roadside"....so college administration at least allow them to remove their burkha in Ladies Room which most of the colleges provides for Gilrs students & while going back they can have their burkha.
