Sullia: On Gandhi Jayanti, Canine Massacre in Subramanya

Daijiworld Media Network - Sullia

Sullia, Oct 3: It was supposed to be a day when the nation remembered Mahatma Gandhi and if not follow, at least respect his ideals. But what was witnessed in the temple town of Subramanya was something grossly cruel.

The Subramanya gram panchyat went on a dog-hunting mission and massacred more than 50 stray and domestic dogs, much to the shock and anger of the locals.

As there were no licensed expert canine catchers available in Sullia, a couple of experts were called from Tamil Nadu and given the job of cleansing Subramanya of dogs. They camped in the town on Monday September 1 and laid traps in every lane. For each dog they caught, they were paid Rs 180, it is said. The operation has continued on Wednesday too.

The carcasses have been heaped into a large pit, and on Thursday October 4, a mass burial will be held, said gram panchayat vice-president Narayana Agrahara.

The locals admit that the stray dogs have been a nuisance to temple visitors, pedestrians, children and cyclists, but opine that killing them on Gandhi Jayanti was not right as it was against the principles of non-violence.

A woman resident said that the gram panchayat's action was too sudden and unexpected. "The gram panchayat officials should have at least given a notice or made a public announcement about the operation, instructing the people to tie up their domestic dogs or put identity belts on them. They should not have taken such a step without warning," she said.

However, gram panchayat president Bhaskar Poojary claimed that the decision in this regard was taken at a general meeting of the panchayat a month ago following complaints made by the locals, and that announcements were made publicly on the instructions of Sullia circle inspector.

Subramanya unit BJP president Achyut Gowda felt that the gram panchayat should have notified the locals at least a week in advance, so that they could take care of their domestic dogs. "It is painful to see domestic dogs that have been raised like children become victims of such a massacre. It is an unpardonable crime," he said.

Devaragadde resident Shekar said that the animal rights society would be approached and a complaint would be filed urging intervention in the matter.

In the midst of all the flak, the gram panchayat's action received some backing too. Narasimha Murthy, a tourist from Bangalore lauded the move and said that those who raise domestic dogs should keep them tied. The stray dogs are a nuisance to the thousands of devotees who come to Subramanya on a daily basis. "It is a welcome move," he added.

Gandhiji said "The greatness of a Nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated".
"Dogs being a nuisance to devotees?". What is the point of praying to God if you are going to murder his creations? The dog has as much rights to live on this planet as you do. Do you think God will bless those who seek joy in killing another life? NO! Compassion makes you see God inside every life. That's when you become a true devotee. Not when you want to murder a life. Be it human or animal. If birth control is the solution for human population, spaying and neutering is the solution for animal population.

    Supporting killing of dogs?
I challenge such supporters to find anything or anybody for that matter who is as 'faithful', 'loyal' and 'loving'as a dog in this stinking materialistic world today! I'll bet my last penny that there will be none! Throw a morsel at it and it'll remember you for life! You know the 'logo' of a leading PSU bank in India, showing a 'Dog' don't you? Talking of 'rabies' the poor animals just about live in a 'space' you have created for it for themselves! They don't demand it! In these days where the Old Aged are conviniently dumped into 'Old Homes', Ashrams, etc, some advocate adopting of stray dogs to others sarcastically,
citing that it may maul their kids etc! Simple solution: Take care of your kids more deligently.
Be aware all the timeDon't let them into 'Dog Space'. Ever seen a cute puppy wag it's tail and follow you? Ever heard of 'puppy love'? It's from this puppy the phrase has been coined. Mankind today has too much to learn from 'Dogs', believe me,in so much as to protecting one's own territory, just 'snarling' not fighting between themselves etc. The list can go on however. Suffice to say that they are other ways of creating 'space', for ourselves without culling these gentle, loving animals. Gandhi Day- Of course man! You start from not 'killing' animals, if you do then you do not know where and when to stop-Right?

I hope you are a vegetarian! If not, during the course of your life, you have probably consume a lot more 'innocent and harmless' animals than the once culled here. I see this 'schizophrenic' behavior of 'dog lovers' in the US as well. They scream cruelty at South Koreans who eat dog meat as a delicacy, but don't mind killing millions of chickens, pigs, goats, and cows for their own consumption.

I condemn this highly cruel, inhuman act of Subramanya Gram Panchayat. If dogs are a menace and pose danger to human beings, then terrorists, rapists and all hardcore criminals too pose great danger to the society. Why not kill them too instead of feeding them in prison? For that matter monkeys, snakes and even stray bulls pose danger to man. Shouldn't these creatures not be killed?

Such a barbaric act. I hate it. Who gives us the right to kill innocent and harmless animals, and that too dogs? Why dont these locals try feeding these dogs for a change and see how they guard their vicinity? Surely someone can find any leftovers at their home. I follow it practically so I can suggest it. People are ready to throw away and waste food but they wont feed dogs. Crows are a menace too. Why not kill everything thats a menace. Good attitude. These people dont care enough to sterilize female dogs and then they come and massacre them. Such a shame. What if these people were set traps for, hunted, killed, and dumped in a trash dumpster? Imagine that....I have nothing more to say.

We in India have tremendous sympathy for dogs but none for human beings. When human beings die in accidents, riots, looting, negligence, attacks by communal groups etc., no one bothers to publish articles and photographs. When stray dogs, which can lead to various problems die, there are so many dog lovers and sympathizers coming forward, mourning and criticising the act. Let these dog sh.. lovers keep such dirty animals inside their house and make sure that they do not come and disturb the common man.

Good work done by Sullia municipality and we want to encourage the same in Mangalore and elsewhere.

Stray dogs were a menace,so all strays were killed. i find beggars also a menace, not to mention the umpteen number of terrorists and burglars. So, why not have a mass culling of all human beings? You never know, when one of them can turn dangerous !!!
I condemn the cheap mentality of the self-proclaimed righteous people, who think they can decide the life (and death) of our fellow-creatures. Remember, they have the same right to live on this earth as you and I have. Come what may, I will always love them and it's not merely saying because I feed stray dogs frequently to keep them from starving. Starvation is what makes people or animals turn to violence. Let's be humans again.

Catch all strays. They are terrible menace anywhere and everywhere.
Catch them, tell people they will be taken to dog rehabilitating centres, but cull all of them out of sight of public, to avoid animal lover org. making a hue and cry out of that.
These org. make big noise when dogs are culled etc. But do not do anything to curb the menace by putting them in a place for their rehabilitation. For that kind of work none of them come forward.

And as for catching culling the dogs on MG Jayanthi, which many say is aginst Gandhi's principle of non-violence, He had a more important principle of abolishing caste system, which majority of Indians are not following. Instead it is going bad to worse, especially in present day politics.
Why remind all those good principles MG taught that are not relevant on all other days of the year but relevant only on his BDay.

He would have been 100 years old on Oct. 2, 2012 if he was alive.

@ Lancelot, Akshata.... Instead of showing sympathy, why don't you come forward and adopt all stray dogs roaming on the roads. Telling is very easy, you people do not understand the nuisance created by these stray dogs. They will come suddenly under the vehicles causing accidents and even deaths.
Last month I happened to came across one incident near one elementary school zone whereas I noticed a large group of students standing and cheering at something. (Later found out that a group of dogs busy mating and fighting with each other). Therefore, such cleansing is required from time to time and crying against such activities is nothing but our ignorance. Even chickens are innocent birds, let us stop killing and eating that.

Gandhi What ?come on guys, use this name for some other issues not this.

Mangalorean, mangalore..Right said. Gandhi Jayanthi day is unnecessary dragged here. Talking about clearing dog mennance, yes the authorites were wrong on their part to do this without a prior notice to the local residents who own dogs. At the same time its the duty of the dog owners also, when the knew that there was dog menance they should not have added to this by leaving their dogs on streets first of all bearing in mind the sanity of the place and tourist rush. Its easy to say, but one bite from a rabies infected cannine to any pedestrian, kids or women their lives could be at risk due to some irresponsible behavior of some people which we usually ignore in India. I am against killing of dogs as a Cannine lover myself, i vouch for sterilisation instead of such killings however, being practical, by looking at our states administration, this issue(budget allocation) would be of least importance now as state is reeling under lot of other "Humanity" related incedents which need priority attention. Politicians or babus may eat part o these funds also and end up in DOG SCAM. Its responsiblity of each & every residents to do their own bit to control this nuisance, first of all keeping area clean and not make public dumping grounds for these to thrive and also taking care of once own rared one. Our passion should be a walking risk to Public. Media or some vested intretsts to spoil Kukke Subramanya 's sanity is unnecessary Dragging Gandhi Jayanthi day here.

Please tell me - where did Gandhiji tell to protect/shelter stray dogs ? Equality among people and sympathy towards the poor was his motto - not protection of menace ?

Common man walking on street is chased by stray dogs. Children mauled and killed by stray dogs. Would Gandhiji have approved it ?

For example, farmers today desist from growing farm produce because from nowhere a troop of monkeys appears and destroys everything that is visible. Are we to depend on markets for our requirements if this goes on ?

At-lease stray dogs are not as harmful as are monkeys.

Dogs strays because of piled up garbage, hapazard disposal of animal waste from butchers etc., Now there will be an episode from Animal rights groups in Subramanya.. but will they take responsibility to rehablitate the strays or prevent these dogs biting or chasing hapless people?

Unfortunately it's a catch 22 situation, you feel sorry for culling but at the same time the stray dogs are a menace and dangerous to life. We have this problem in Bangalore where we live, after sunset these dogs pose danger to vulnerable children and ladies, you feel scared to walk alone in the night as they are in groups, they watch and attack when they see an opportunity. Municipality must have a solution for this problem, if it is culling so be it and why should domestic dogs roam on the streets they should be within your home compound, once they are out there is no difference between stray dogs and domestic. I hope Bangalore Municipality will follow the suit immediately and urgently and eradicate the menace.
