Cauvery Stir Intensifies in Karnataka, Govt Under Fire

Mandya, Oct 3 (PTI) : Protests against release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu escalated today when thousands of farmers attempted to lay siege to Krishna Raja Sagar and Kabini dams, demanding immediate closure of crest gates to stop the flow.

Defying prohibitory orders and breaking police cordon, the protesters rushed towards both dams from which the state is releasing 9,000 cusecs since Sunday, in compliance with a Supreme Court directive.

At KRS dam in Mandya district, some protesters jumped into the Cauvery river, resulting in injuries to two of them.

The situation in and around KRS dam posed concern as thousands of farmers poured in. Some police personnel and protesters were injured in stone pelting and the resultant baton charge. Police struggled to control the swelling crowd.

Road traffic between Mysore-Bangalore remained disrupted for the fifth consecutive day due to road blockade by farmers.

District authorities today deployed Rapid Action Force (RAF) at KRS dam.

G Madegowda, chairman of Cauvery Hitarakshana Samithi, the body spearheading the stir, set a 6 PM deadline to the BJP government to stop water release.

"Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar has betrayed farmers. We will continue the protest till this government is ousted," he said.

Raitha Sangha (Farmers association) leader Kurubur Shantahamurthy said farmers would lay a siege to Raj Bhavan tomorrow in Bangalore, seeking intervention of Governor H R Bhardwaj to stop the water release.

Earlier in the day, Congress MP H Vishwanath and others staged a protest at Kabini reservoir at H D Kote and JDS MP, N Cheluvarayaswamy at KRS dam.

Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar urged farmers to maintain peace and said the state would file a review petition before the Supreme Court either today or tomorrow, praying for a review of Cauvery River Authority directive.

The Karnataka government began releasing water after the Supreme Court asked it to abide by the September 19 directive of the Cauvery River Authority, headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh till October 15.

Its clear now Congress ministers in central have no voice or respect.Had they had one PM wouldnt have taken this decision. If PM had discussed with these ministers why didnt they protest?Only Ambarish from Congress seems to be leader of masses with genuine interest. Supreme court simply said to respect what PM said and thus release the water. Supreme court did not authorise to release the water on its own but it was pms instruction.

If jagadish Shettar wanted to protect water of Karnataka he shoulnt have boycotted the meeting held with prime minister. He should have protested the decision of PM then and there in the meeting. Both PM and Shettar are at fault.Bottom line is PM wanted to please Jayalalita and thats why he was in a hurry.

What a waste of precious time and man hours. This is one of the reasons for our country going to dogs.

The Supreme court has passed orders. All have to follow those orders.By wasting time protesting what benefit does one get ? This is utter madness.

Karnataka should open up all the crest gates this year so that TN ( Mettur / Salem )floods.Next year we wont have this problem. The next year Jayalalitha will say " please do not release KRS water " to TN !!

SC has asked for water to be released.. Karnataka officials/politicians had enough time to put up their case before them.SC has done the job with legal bias. it is responsible of the officials, beuracrats, government of karnataka to explain the people.. since it is flowing from karnataka it is not right to say we will not give water. we all indians.. we should share the burdens equallly.. If the farmers in karanata is suffering so as the farmers in tamil nadu too..It is sad people are making this as a political issue Every Indian should follow supreme court's directions.

why this neeru vairi, neeru vairi. we must understand that the natural resources are for the benefit of humans and society. it has to be used for the good. when the nature and its resources are used and destroyed for selfish reasons(mines, forest etc) then there is no such cry. if the water is used for the benefit of farmers whats the cry for. we the citizens must learn to abide the laws and the rulings of the court. India is sufferings because of this attitude and corruption is not vanishing because we don't take the law seriously and abide by it. all this is for political gain. why the people fight for all this when there is a political interest let the politicians fight it out, let them fast they are for working for people instead of going abroad when there is drought let them have holiday in this water. farmres are dying, there is drought and no one makes any noise. any politician thinks of getting some water or any irrigation plans to the north part of Karnataka. it has huge fertile fields but barren. if some irrigation plans are made these fields can be cultivated thrice a year. com on those who are in this water catch the politicians to supply some water to north Karnataka. don't fight for this unreasonable issue.

Cavery stir may change entire political equations in Karnataka. It is unfair to give unilateral decision with out assessing the ground reality of CAVERY Bastion either by PM or SC.On the other hand,State Govt took it easy even though we are having drought most of the part of Karnataka, agreed to release water in SC on daily basis....Apart from that our legal approach some what lukewarm when TN's well known Lawyers taken it as very serious.

Half the population of Tamil Nadu is living in Bangalore and other parts of Karnataka and using Cauvery water, now they are asking for more water depriving water for our farmers. With the weaker monsoon Karnataka is heading for a drought this year too.

Karnataka is just overcoming severe drought. At this time release of water is a betrayal for our farmers. CM should immediately stop the water flow to TN.

This is purely politics from congress since BJP is ruling in the state. Our 4 central ministers should be thrown to Kaveri River near Kabini reservoir. Let them go to TN.

Silent PM hates Kannadigas and their interests. He was invited for tulu sammelana, kannada sammelana, metro inauguration etc etc. He skipped everything.
