Mangalore, Oct 4: Transportation of illicit liquor by trucks, jeeps and private vehicles may be common and likely to be caught. Some people seem to have therefore devised another method - sneeking in illicit liquor through passenger bus.

However, the latest method too has been foiled by the Maryhill excise police.

In a flash operation, three employees of Ganesh Travels bus were arrested for transporting illicit liquor by bus from Goa to Mangalore.

The aressted persons have been identified as bus drivers Ashok and Venkappa, and cleaner Vishwanath.

As many as 40 bottles of illicit liquor were found in the bus.

The liquor bottles and the bus have been confiscated by the police.

It is suspected that more such transportation of illicit liquor by passenger buses may be taking place. Such buses provide a safer option to smugglers as the buses ply on the same route on an everyday basis and hence do not arouse suspicion of the authorities. Also, unlike other vehicles, luggage is not often checked in passenger buses.

Further details on the incident awaited.

This act by the Police / Excise Dept is only to finger Mr.Anand Asnotikar,Minister & Karwar MLA. Asnotikar's mamool will be cut now onwards esp. since the iron ore business & export have stopped at Belikere & Karwar ports. Asnotikar's wings are being clipped slowly by Jagdish Shettar, CM.

Even in Kerala where arrack has been banned, there's plenty of illicit alcohol available at Karnataka and Tamil Nadu boarder. It happens everywhere Very hard to check. Best way is to do a thorough vehicle checking at check posts including private vehicles becuase even private cars can also hold many bottles of alcohol in it.

This BJP will not allow anythig from other states nor allow to get it from your own state.

    People see in future:-

Beef will totally ban in k'taka.

You are not allowed to bring from other states

Education will be poor or expensive in bjp state

But you will be not allowed to study from other states without the permission from BDS,HJV,DVD etc.

When one travels back from Goa by car he tops up his petrol tank just before the Karnataka border in Goa.Now driving your car with full tank petrol ( filled in Goa ) , is it called " illicit petrol " or are you termed a " petrol smuggler " ?
This could start a healthy debate on the 'term' used .

Why call it Illicit Liquor, when all the vehicles plying out of Goa fill neck full of fuel which is also cheap. Why this is not called Illicit / Illegal. Once I had a confrontation with an officer at the Sadashivgad check post, He saying the fuel will be consumed, then what do we do with the liqour we dont keep it for sale even that is consumed. If this is the case every vehicle's fuel tanks entering & exiting Goa has to be checked for quantity available in the tanks. This may give them another additional oppourtunity for them to make more money.

had been to Goa recently, according to the rule GOA government provides a permit to individuals to carry 2 bottles of liquor to other states. but our great police of Maharashtra disrespect this permits by tearing them and breaking the bottles at several MAHARASHTRA-GOA border checkpoints.. they specially target people traveling by car(since they have jugad with bus operators).

if people are not allowed to carry liquor legally into Maharashtra then they will automatically start smuggling it.

instead of catching people who dont hav permits.... this pandus attack honest people with permits..

as far as the above article is concerned looks like cops didn't get their usual share of chai-paani....

I think sufficient bribe was not paid at the border.Normally the bribe is Rs 50/- per bottle of whiskey.

I have brought 6 bottles of imported scotch whiskey last month and the border police asked me to pay Rs 300/- which I did.He was happy , so was I !!

@Leslie Lobo, Mangalore : It is wrong to say that it's their (BD) job to stop these illegal activity & not police's! There are laws & institutions to implement the Law & constitution. If BD, KRV & similar organisations (I call them goonda organisations), take law into their hands, tomorrow anybody can go & thrash their neighbor! In fact, they (BD, HJV) can assist the authorities by providing the info about illegal activities, nothing else!

How can one will call this as illicit liquor.
If the people want to drink and Goa liquor is cheaper than Karnataka, then why the Govt. of Karnataka cannot lower the prices. Might be even the quality of alchol of Goa is better.

Our policy are nothing less than stinking corrupt. One State official paid tax goods cannot be imported to other states. Nothing but encouraging black market trade.

When we will open the door for other state and vice versa.

Today in International market. in open market, one country opens its door to other. This is how FDI starts pouring in. Our policy is nothing but ' we either grow nor we do not allow others to grow". Only corruption flourish. Disgusting.

That is why the quality and educated people started migrating to developed countries.

    @Vijay, Mangalore

Every state has its own state tax. If we are paying that tax so where will be the state development.

Let me explain you in better way....
In TamilNadu Cooking oil is much much more cheaper than in Karnataka. And these Tamilians bring these cooking oil to Bangalore through different roots where there is less checking at check post. They sell these oil to hotels and retailers....
Now these hoteliers making profits as well as those who are selling also making profit....

Each state gives separate subsidy on basic commodities.

Similarly in Goa both liquor and petrol is cheap. If all of Karnataka buy these goods (mainly liquor) from Goa what should we do the liquor which is produced in Karnataka????

    Dear Policemen,
I think this not a big issue these people were just saving money by bringing these bottles from goa. I think you should concentrate more on people who kidnap childrens and use them for begging or other business. Wake up please dont waste your precious time on all these silly issues. Those children are more important than these bottles.

I m laughing by reading this... Either the reporter is innocent or try to act like innocent...

I have traveled lot Goa - Bangalore, Goa - Mumbai and goa Mangalore.

There is every day checking in bus. Funny thing about checking is one drunk official will check the luggage and another drunk official come inside the bus and ask nonsense questions to passengers.

Smuggler give one bottle out of 50 to the official and they enter Karnataka border without any fine or duty.

The authorities dont need rocket science to figure out the methods for smuggling liquor. They only need willingness to work and the "GET UP and GO" attitude. However if some money changes hands, no buses will be checked in the future. ALL IS WELL.

Why not reduce the excise and other taxes on Liquor in Karnataka to the levels of Goa? Why we should pay a higher price when residents of one state pay less for the same liquor? Reducing the liquor prices will increase the tourists in Karnataka as Goa has a competitive advantage compared to other states today.
