Mangalore, Oct 10: Talk of pension giving tension. In this case, 'pension' brought tension not only to the seven persons who became victims of a conman, but to the conman himself who used it as a bait to lure them.

Bunder police on Wednesday October 10 arrested Gilbert John Vas alias Gilbert (47), resident of Manchi Kolnad, Bantwal, who is accused of looting elderly people in the name of pension.

It is learnt that he allegedly cheated seven people. Several cases were registered against him - one each in Pandeshwar and Kadri police stations, and five cases in Bunder police station.

Valerian D’Souza Tannir Bavi, Juliana D’Souza Padil, Theresa Norohna Hoigebazar, Sesamma Kanchila, Bantwal, Veronica D’Souza, Neermarga, Lousie D’Souza Padua and Leelavathi Gurpur are said to be his vicitms.

It is learnt that the accused looted them by making false promises of providing pensions. He would take them to unknown places and ask them to remove all their valuables and keep them in a bag, telling them that they would not avail pension if they were found with the valuables. The gullible victims would do as he instructed, only to realize later that he had robbed and cheated them. He would even charge them for the application.

On May 2, he played the same trick on Valerian. He escaped with Rs 1,800 in cash, a chain, a ring and a dual sim mobile phone, which was switched off. When he turned on the phone the police tracked him down and arrested him.

Police have recovered 102 grams of gold from him. It is learnt that the accused used to sell the looted gold to Sona Bankers at a lower price.

A case has also been registered against Robert Castelino, owner of Sona Bankers.

I would like to post a contrarion view here!! How come people wearing gold braclets, chains, rings, lots of cash, dual SIM mobile phones fell prey to this "alleged" conman? Is it not greed!! Shame on these people, they wanted to avail of pension!!

I know of so many families living in Mangluru having very good income and crores of savings resorting to BPL cards and availing of the facilities there! What can one term these people as?????? Why blame him, blame greed, the desire to acquire more and more from whatever source!!!

Sona Bankers should be charged as 'Collaborators' in the crime and Punished accordingly. If there are no Marwadis to purchase the stolen goods, then the thieves will stop stealing, because if they cannot sell the stolen goods why they will take the risk of stealing ? Sona Bankers cannot take a plea that they were not knowing that it was stolen goods. Because when a lower middle class person comes seven times and sells costly Jewelry, then that Marwadi should have got doubt and informed the police.

    Dear Mr. Gilbert John Vas,
You have broken one commandment out of 10 commandment which is a sin.

Secondly, you should have thought that one day or the other you will be caught for robbing.

Finally, you cannot escape from the punishment because you have robbed small, small fish. Now your dream of luxrious life is accomplished in the Jail.

There are people of different types looting the poor Elderly. Some like Gilbert single handedly some in the names of NGO. I was working in an NGO poor elderly used to come for some physical exercises.Whenever their birthday/anniversaries come, people working in the NGO used to pester these poor Elderly to give treat like heavy breakfast.

There was one man who used to beg and bring eatables for the staff of NGO. This is what is happening in the names of poor. Instead of giving them some food/clothing they snatch from these people. In front of society they are helping the poor when you go to see what is happening this is the case. To get the grants from government they produce all false documents. People want name and fame not service to the society.
