Mangalore: Plastics to be Banned from Nov 1 - DC

Mangalore, Oct 12 (DHNS): The District administration has decided to ban the use of plastics in Dakshina Kannada district in a phased manner. The ban on the use of plastics has been implemented in Moodbidri TMC limits on a pilot basis.

The plastic ban will be implemented in Mangalore city and taluk from November 1, said Deputy Commissioner Dr N S Channappa Gowda.

Chairing a meeting of various organisations here on Thursday, he said “the citizens of the district should cooperate with the district administration in implementing the ban. The ban on the use of plastic will be implemented only after getting suggestions from the plastic users, manufacturers, Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry.”

He said the use of below 40 micron thickness carry bags have already been banned in Dakshina Kannada. The Mangalore City Corporation officials have been carrying out raids at various places in the MCC limits, to check the use of banned plastic carry bags. The College students and members of various organisations have been creating awareness on the ill effects of the use of plastics. Even District-in-Charge Minister has directed all the officials to initiate measures to ban the use of plastics.

“The district administration has decided to study the pros and cons of the ban on plastic before implementing the order. In the first phase, district administration has decided to ban plastics in Mangalore taluk from November 1,” he said.

There are 60 units manufacturing plastics in the district. The meeting discussed on alternatives to plastics.

“Subsidy will be provided for the sthree shakthi sangha, self-help groups to manufacture cloth bags. We will ensure that there would be no burden on the consumers,” Channappa Gowda said.

The participants in the meeting urged the district administrative to dispose the plastic waste in a scientific manner.

Zilla Panchayat CEO Dr K N Vijayaprakash, MCC Commissioner Dr Harish Kumar, Pollution Control Officer Lakshman and others were present.

Bio-degradable plastic has already been invented as reported in the media. It is said to be in use in advanced countries. Why it is not tried in India ? Is it very costly ? pl. let me know as I have no idea about the same.

Giving subsidy to the producers of Cloth bag may not be prudent idea, because every Subsidy scheme in India gives birth to new type of brokers and new avenue for corruption. However, as govt already gives subsidy to Khadi & village Industries, the job of cloth bag supplies to all Malls & deptl stores may be entrusted to Khadi gramodyoga to begin with.

In olden days there were specialized tailors who were concentrating on stitching of bags only from old cloths collected by vendors or Orphanages.

Really good move. By giving the work of cloth bag manufacturing to Sthree Shakti Sangha is good decision. Good step in Empowering women in the society. We have to use traditional bags like manufactured by using cloth, areca nut palm. By this way we can protect our nature.

This is a very good move by the Authorities . Plastic bags should have been banned long time bag . There was a time when we used to value for a plastic bag where we used to wash and dry them for reuse.Today plastic bags are so much available people throw immidiately after using them once . Super Markets like Reliance/ More / Spar etc are giving one plastic for 5 Chillies , one plastic for 3 tomatoes , and one plastic for 3 Onions and so on. If one household goes home with 10 plastics a day , just immagine the number of plastics thrown away at the end of the day.Bangalore as started Garbage segregation with Wet Waste and dry waste seperated.Totally they are 6 types of waste which residents have started to segregate . Why not MCC start in Mangalore. We can even see people throwing away garbage plastic bundles in the gutter etc and finally this is getting accumulated on our coast lines in the Sea Shore. We will be really happy if Plastics are Banned except some plastics with alot of thickness can be used to preserve fish in the fridge and can be washed and reused . Anyways , this is a good decision from the Authorities and people will make sensible use of plastics in time to come.

    Plastic ban is must......

    Its stopping natures biodegrading process.....

All the waste from city contains 50% of plastic.....

Think of situation where there is no plastic and all the waste is used to produce fertilizer. This is what we used to do in olden days.
Cow dung, tea powder waste, vegetable waste were all dumped in a vessel and used as fertilizer.

    Plastic also blocks drainage flow.

Some products such as meat, poultry & fish cannot be carried without using plastic bags as they will spill water & blood as melting ice cannot be contained by cloth or any other packaging materials unless rubber is used, which can be used many times.
Bio-degradable plastics using starch or sugar have been introduced, though they cost more they are environment friendly.
Introduce those transparent plastic bags we used to carry books to our school which can be re-used after a wash unless they are pierced by sharp food items.

please put up some rules to stop spitting in public especially eating pan and other tobacco items spitting almost everywhere from the buses , top of the buildings, staircases are the best esp/lifts !! also ban using of harsh horns and put a speed limit for buses. the speed and the way they travel there is no discipline. they will horn so loud esp while overtaking other vehicles as if barking at them to move aside. please do something on these issues and then we can make mangalore a metro along with infra projects wch are going on to improve our city. thank you.

Good Move made to ban plastic in Mangalore. Does it mean that the ban will only be for 40 micron thickness carry bags or all the plastic items. If so what will happen to the plastic manufacturing companies and all those others who are dependent on them.
