Difficult to Upgrade Mangalore Railway to International Standards: Muniyappa

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (DV)

Mangalore, Oct 15: "It is difficult to upgrade Mangalore railway station to world class standards due to unavailability of land. To upgrade to international status the station requires nearly 5 acres of land. If the state government can provide the land, the railway department is ready to make either Kankanady or Central railway station world class," said union minister for railways K H Muniyappa.

He was addressing a press meet here on Monday October 15, he said that decision on making Mangalore and Gulbarga as divisions has not been taken yet, but it may happen soon.

Trains between Kadur and Chikmagalur, White Field and Kolar will begin within three months, he said.

"A survey has been done for the construction of railway track between Mysore and Kushalanagar. From 2004 onward till the present nearly 1,500 km of railway lines have been built. Further plans to extend the railroad line by 1,500 km, to make a total 3,000 km rail track in the state will be considered. Totally 90 trains are running actively in the state," he informed.

Construction of railway line between Hubli and Ankola, Thaleguppa and Honnavara possess threat to the environment. In this regard, the Indian Institute of Science has come forward with a solution for construction of tunnels.

Mangalore-Bangalore train has been extended to Karwar. The railway department is functioning significantly without any instance of corruption in the department, he said.

He further said that the UPA has provided various facilities to the citizens. Government project MGNREGA comprises 623 programmes to the citizens, but unfortunately the allotted funds are being misused. Further developmental works with regard to drinking water, well, harvesting needs to be undertaken.

MLA Ramanatha Rai, former MLA Vinaykumar Sorake, MLA U T Khader were present.

Yes, I agree since Mangalore Central Station is dead-end station there is very little scope for horizontal expansion. But if there is a will there is a way for vertical expansion. Provide 3 more platforms by building Second tier over existing 3 platforms similar to proposed 3 Tier platform at Chennai St Thomas Railway Station by Chennai Metro.

If this point has come to develop Mangalore railway station, there must be a reason behind as Mangalore has all kind of transportation see, land railway and air as some of the big cities don't have. So some has to take imitative to develop Mangalore. So far as it was lying dead even though English Portughese Germens count Mangalore is a Jevel but our politicians they don't know the value of transportation. If it requires 5 acres of land then it's the duty of the state government to provide it. This the time to show the spirit of Mangalorians around the world. Common Mangalorians wake up for your further generations.

If Mangalore Central station cannot be upgraded due to paucity of space, upgrade Mangalore Junction. Sever Mangalore station from the clutches of Malayalis and let it come under South Western Railway. Stop Malayalization of Mangalore. At present, when one visits Mangalore Central station, one feels it is right in the heart of Malayali land. In no other State such a situation exists. What a tragedy for Karnataka!

Muniyappa is boasting of building 1500 Km of new Railway line taking many decades for that. While Bangalore-Shravana Belagola-Hassan line is being built at the pace of 10 km of new track Per Year, whereas China has built 2000 km of new track within just TWO YEARS only, that too in a very very difficult mountain area of Tibet.
Of course China has no Problem of environmentalists and Narrow-minded Railway Ministers Like Lalu Yadav, Paswan or Mamatha Bannerji.

J.P.Hegde is the right person to take up the issue with sincerity.
Muniappa has been an obstacle to all railway matters concerning Coastal area, and he is now shedding crocodile tears at Mangalore.
People must unite and get Mangalore upgraded in order to meet future needs as well as to be par with the best that is available in India.
We have all the talents and resources to do good work for coastal Karnataka.
We don't need Muniyappas and the likes to dominate over us, and envy our progress.
It is high time coastal area should rise up against road transport lobby to get all our rights.

Sir your words 'difficult' itself shows it is possible ! If there is a will there is a way! 5 Acre Land to Railways it is not difficult job at all. We are going for any internatinal standard yes it is a good sign of improvement! but first arrange the normal minimal requried standards to all the Railway stations and next to a international standard.

Suggestion of Veerappa-Madikeri, is worth noting.
Because the Mysore-Kushalnagar-Madikeri-Mangalore new line will connect GOA & Mumbai through Konkan Railway, and the Kodagu which is called as "Kashmir of Karnataka", will develop as very popular tourist Centre for Eco-Tourism. This Rly Line will also connect OOTY through Mysore thereby making this a very highly preferred "Tourism Corridor" from Goa to Ooty.

Muniyappa Sir, pl note that Mysore to Kushalnagara Railway Line will not be profitable unless the same is extended up to Virajpete and connected to Kerala between Kannur-Mangalore coastal Raiwlay line. But again as it passes through Western Ghat Environmental Clearance may pose big hurdle just like Hubli-Ankola and Shimoga-Honnavar.
Also Mysore-Kushalnagar-Madikeri-Sillia-Puttur-Kaaniyoor/Mangalore new Route may also be Profitable.

Presently Karnataka has totally 3000 km Railway line out of which more than 2000 km was the legacy of British. So which 1500 km new line Muniyappa is talking about which was built in last 8 yrs ?

Even British Railway Management termed “Konkan Railway” as impossible task, but thanks to Chief of Konkan Railway, Mr. Sridharan, it happened in India though we shed 3 times more than actual budget allocation. If they have "will" there is a "way" too. But Minister like Muniyappa comes with pre-decided task assigned by UPA Government not to help non-Congress Government in State like Karnataka, it will never happens in the rule of Congress Led Government in Central. Its’ all possible in Kerala but not in Karnataka why? Environ-mental issue is the hurdle for railway tracks in some of the area in Karnataka but where was the Environ-mental Department when then CM Moily gave permission to build UPC in Nandikoor?

    1. Introduce automatic ticket dispatcher booth that can be accessed by bank ATM checking account card or credit cards.
    2. Introduce at least 10 ticket dispatching lines.
    3. Introduce 4 commercial grade elevators for old passengers and passengers with luggage to move around
    4. Keep the railway station area free from any solicitation
    5. Introduce free bus too and from railway station to the rickshaw stands and get the rickshaws out of the station and expand the station for extra facilities for the passengers.

It's a pity, that for the last forty years, there hasn't been any major change, the station was fine during early 80's, then as the commuters grew it couldn't keep up..the worst thing is that there is only two ticket dispatcher queue, even smaller station has two queues! Mangalore should be equipped with atleast 10 to 12 ticket dispatching booths and automatic ticket booth's that can be accessed with credit card, there isn't any convinenance for old people, there isn't any access for them to board trains in platforms other than platform one, even some govt employees find it difficult to cross the over bridge..commercial grade elevators are needed..A separate compartment for old, sick and families travelling with small kids should be allowed. School students should be allowed a separate compartment manned by male/female cops to avoid ragging of the students.

First of all the Indian Government and the Ministers must spell out what is international standard. We are far far behind international standard. The railways reuire to go green first. The Indian railways need to have septic tanks for the toilets and dispose in the drainage to be provided in the railway stations. Now one cannot tolerate the smell of human waste and urine that is drained out from the toilets openly in railway staions. It is very unhygienic to consume food in Indian railway flatforms. Therefore my dear Muniyappa please upgrade the open toilets into green toilets for Mangalore railways. We are in 21st century ok?

Atleast make Mangalore, a separate division in necxt railway budget and let it come under SWR, Hubli.

Otherwise Mangalore will never get trains to other parts of Karnataka and no platforms to Bangalore and Mumbai trains at Central station. Karnataka bound trains are delayed in signals to facilitate Kerala trains first, after entering Mangalore city limits.
Also there is no need of Malayalam boards in Mangalore station as Kannada boards are not there in Calicut or Cochin.

Muniyappaji, can you please tell the details of 1500 Km of new Railway Line built in last 7 yrs after 2004 ?
In fact after independence - in last 65 years hardly 900 km of new Rly line has been added in Karnataka including Arasikere-Hassan-Mangalore , Hassan-Mysore , Bengaluru-Kolara, Mysore-Chamarajanagar, Mangalore-Karwar. Rest all are built during British time and converted to Broad-gauge during the time of Jaffer Sharif. Small Harahara-Kotturu 120 km line is under construction since last 12 yrs, and Bengalore-Shravanabelagola 140 km line has still not taken off even though it reduces distance between Mangalore-Bangalore by 90 km as compared to present Arasikere route.

As regards place required for converting Mangalore Central Rly Station to Intl Standard, you can demolish all those palatial Railway quarters behind Venlock Hispital and University College. The Staff quarters may be Shifted to new Flats to be built in Kankanadi or some other place. Such Palatial British bunglows are not required for present staff (though I am nostalgic about such British Rly bunglows, as my childhood is spent in such Rly Bunglows as my father was Rly Station Master in Hubli Division).

For expanding Kanakanadi Rly station it is the duty of MCC to acquire all those Private land and give it to Rly dept. Sufficient Private land is available there for expansion of Station to Intl std.

If any one moves out of Kankanady Railway Station (Mangalore Junction) you can find most of land like jungle. These properties are not been able to sell perhaps because of marking by Railway longtime back. Some of houses are still unsold though brokers had tried a lot to make a deal. Naturally, if Railway had made marking long back, definetly one or other day it will become railway property. Or it means railway around this station has ample opportunity to develop or expand.

Perhaps our Central Minister is misguided or lacks the knowledge in the regard. Or he lacks interest for development here. Please remember you words spoken earlier when Yeshwantpur train was extended from Mangalore to Kannur "Railways are national asset & it is for benefit of all".

Mr.Muniyappa keep politics aside & serve in the interest of coastal people. It will definetly benefit many. Better he instructs his people to get a clear-cut report on the status, & then speak.
