John - Palimar, I agree with you in totality. Your opinion is bang on bull's eye (100 percent correct). Only one thing to add on - you have not mentioned if 8 hours of mandatory basics, laws, rules and regulations and the safety for the new applicants is for a day, a week etc. I speculate it is on a per-day-basis and guess this training will just go over the head. It depends on person-to-person and their grasping skills. Even the experts training the new applicants will 'run out of steam'

    Better to go slow.

The standard of Roads in Mangalore has to be improved,The ongoing Road project is going at snail speed. If this is not looked into immediately, you can expect increased road mishaps in due course. Even politicians can be victims on that Highway.Heafty fines have to be implemented to voilator. which is not happening, traffic cops misuse their positions and encourage violators by charging violators nominal without receipts......

4 lanes or 8 lanes doesn't make any difference for Indian drivers from literate to illiterate. No sense of fast lane and slow lane, auto rickshaw, truck drivers driver on fast lanes. All they know is to steer, change gear and sometimes to apply brake and if you have qualities department of transportation issues licenses to these applicants. Transport department does nothing for the safety of the public and the drivers. No proper signage, flaws in road design, driving school instructors clueless of laws and road safety. No accountability. In my opinion, one 8 hours class should be mandatory to learn the basics, laws, rules and regulations and the safety for the new applicants. Applicant should write an online test before appearing for the driving test. Also, driving test inspectors should be independent and lottery system should be allocated for the candidates that way no one knows which inspector is taking which candidate for the test. Consequences for passing a incompetent candidate would be cancellation driving test inspectors license. Same thing should apply to driving school instructors and the school, cancellation of their permits. That's all for now.

Last week I drove from Mumbai - Goa - Mangalore and back. The entire stretch is about 2000 km but Udupi - Mangalore road which is about 120 km is the most traumatizing. I am willing to share some inputs with Mangalore – Udupi RTO officials. Please mail @ joe_saldanha@mail.com.

Miserable, sorrowful, tragic deaths every day, being the situation on roads is out of control.
People are being moved on wheels like goods and materials, where human lives have no values.

Understanding the situation of limited roads, multiplying vehicles, increase in population is very essential. We cannot move fast on roads, like we do in electronic media and mobiles.

The possible solution can be the addition of adequate, safe and good conditioned public transport vehicles, by considerably reducing the mushrooming of SUVs and two wheelers, on roads.

9 people in Tata Sumo and may be their luggage is beyond the capacity of the vehicle. Its difficult to control a vehicle when it is over loaded, driver should be really experienced. The deaths in Udupi Mangalore is more than any one dies in a war.

Our system, our politicians, the arrogance of our authorities are all contributing factors for such accidents. Hunam life has lost its value. We are just a vote bank. But the returns we get are this. No assurances that we would return home safe.
Is there any shame left? Is there any accountability left with these insensitive swines.
The cops are just busy on the last week of the month, booking petty traffic cases. But on the highways, there is so much of indiscipline. Trucks ply without respect to lanes.
I am not surprised that if this was a empty gas cylinder truck it would have been moving at killer speed because they have to stand in the Q.Even the express buses dont have any humane left in them. It just routine business for them. Killing people.
But if we have effecient police patrolling on our roads, we can stop these unwarranted deaths.
So all you lousy fat ugly politicians and corrupt officers, directly or indirectly related to these accidents, wake up and understand that even you travel these roads.Wake up before its too late.

Three Siblings went together for “Yatra” but heavenly abode forever. This may be God willing to unite them even in death or after death too. Let us all pray together with GOD to give eternal peace forever those who deceased and speedy recovery of those injured also. I would request all our neighbor State people to slow down while travelling on Coastal roads since it is highly dangerous due to construction activities and unruly behavior of some of the Heavy Duty Drivers those who do not know the condition and traffic on Coastal Area
