Udupi: Theft at House in Moodubelle, Gold Worth Rs 15 Lac Stolen

By Anil Alva

Udupi, Oct 18:
In what could be considered as a heavy-handed robbery, gold worth over Rs 15 lac was stolen from the house of Judith Lobo at Thirlapalke, Moodubelle on the intervening night between Wednesday October 17 and Thursday October 18.

The lone occupant of the house, Judith Lobo had gone to her mother’s place at Udupi on Monday October 15 and returned only when she came to know of the robbery on October 18 morning.

Taking advantage of the absence of Judith Lobo, the robbers struck her residence, broke open the main door and ransacked the cupboards and decamped with the gold ornaments weighing 320 grams, valued over Rs 15 lac. Incidentally, the thieves left behind artificial jewellery which was of no value to them.

On receiving the information, Shirva ASI and crime branch police rushed to the scene of the crime. Fingerprint experts from Udupi as well as dog squad were pressed into investigation.

Police lament that in spite of their repeated appeal to the public to be careful about their costly belongings such as gold ornaments, people have been taking their warnings very lightly. The police have been educating the people about the danger of exhibiting and keeping large amount of gold at home and leaving the house unguarded. In spite of the incidents of chain snatching and robberies, people are yet to awake to the seriousness of these problems.

My advice to everyone to keep all valuables and documents in a bank locker. It should be insured and the valuables d to the bank officials. Keeping in the house is very risky and now Judith Lobo is paying a price.

I think robbers are patrolling Udupi dist better than our police.Every week,we witness one big robbery in Udupi.Last month,I was in India. One of our neighbours went to Kolkatta, second day he had to return to Manipal after hearing a news that his house was robbed..God knows how these people come to know when owners go out of station.May be,they visit houses in the morning like carpet, broom sellers and watch carefully. If owner is not there, then attack at night.

This is in reference to Mr. Jawahars cooments.

Some banks will charge as custody charges if the value of jewellry held is more than say 5 times of loan amount. More over the loan has to be timely renewed. Service charges to be paid. The jewel appraiser may apply acid to test the purity. To overcome this one can take an insurance cover for golden ornaments from any General Insurancve company.

Further the Logic of Locker operation is joint custody with Bankers holding one key and another key with the customer. So at any point of time the locker cannot be opened with 1 key. Of late I read in newspaper that in one of the branch of PNB, a fraud was happened wherein all golden articles kept in the locker were fraudulently removed by the fraudster. The fraudster is an internal officer, who always had the custody of master key as well as keys of unsold lockers. He has fraudulently duplicated the keys of unsold lockers. And once this locker is allocated to the new customers, he watched the operations keenly and on one fine day, operated these lockers with his master key and duplicate key. This is one risk factor from the customer’s perspective.
Now my suggestion to those all who have locker facility and going to have locker facility is that, there is provision to fix 3rd lock to the locker, the key of which will be with the customer only. However please ensure that the lock is ordered by you only (The companies are either Godrej or Steelage) and fixed by you with the help of company technician or bank officials in your presence. The idea is not to give chance to create a duplicate key for the 3rd lock. Rest for this aspect, keeping gold in SDL is 100% safe. Also as per recent RBI guideline, please operate the locker at least once in a year.

really sad. there is no safer place nowadays gold is very interesting for everyone specially for thieves best is not to have much gold. who says bank lockers are safe? I had my experience. in 1980 we opened a account in a bank with locker and kept gold since mother was old . unfortunately with only husbands name. with the next instance we went together there and made it joint account I gave my paper with signature in managers room . we paid charges regularly . and after two years later I had to go alone to regulate official things and wanted to take out gold. I got a shock of my life .my paper with signature was not there nobody entered in the book manager was transfered nobody was knew anything about it. they refused to give me the gold .they told me without my husbands signature paper not to handover the gold.it was not only gold but certain documents also were there.I hadonly to call my husband in germany and tell to send a paper with his signature. so are people in bank careless. second instance lately I heard a lady who kept her gold in locker went to collect and found it was calledout to public hire. withput the ladys permission or knowledge she had hardly time to go forward. it looks like they say in kannada hana kandare hena cooda bai biduthade . did anyone experience such mishap in bank ?

JUDITH LOBO's house may @ radar of thieves for quite some time!!It could be local expertise with active hand in glove with outside thieves.Taking care of one's own valuables lies with owner and police can little do in these situations.

Bank locker's are the one which are targeted nowaday's in Kerala better keep it in the bank and take a loan against it where all the details of the jewellery will be kept. Just pay the loan and keep a small amount unpaid.

In what could be considered as a 'heavy handed'robbery-means they came 'empty' and left 'heavy'handed is it? Seems the robbers knew that M/s Lobo had plenty...As cautioned so many times before, make use of bank lockers otherwise these days there's no guarentee....
