Another Harrowing Experience for AIE Passengers

Another Harrowing Experience for AIE Passengers

Kochi, Oct 20 (PTI): In another harrowing experience for Air India passengers, a Kochi bound flight from Bahrain took nearly 20 hours to reach its destination following technical snags and bad weather, prompting some of them to disembark here and stage a protest.

Air India Express passengers protested at the parking bay when the flight flew in here without touching down at Kozhikode. Forty seven of them disembarked, while 119 were bound for Kozhikode.

The passengers landed at Kozhikode by around 2 PM. Air India sources said the Bahrain-Doha-Kozhikode-Kochi flight developed a technical snag at Doha which was sorted out. On its way to Kozhikode, another snag cropped up and an alarm sounded in the cockpit, following which it was diverted to Mumbai.

The flight was grounded in Mumbai and 163 passengers were put on another flight to Kozhikode. But due to poor visiblity, it could not land there and came to Kochi, the sources said.

One of the passengers Naufal told PTI that since last night, AIE had served a can of water and a small piece of plum cake. "This was the same for breakfast at Kochi and lunch'.

Some passengers had bought chocolates from duty free shops at Bahrain and Doha which they shared, he said. Yesterday, a hijack alarm was triggered by the woman pilot in panic after agitated passengers of an Abu Dhabi-Kochi bound AI flight allegedly stormed the cockpit following which six people were detained for questioning and later let off.

Airport Director A K C Nair today said the passengers protested for a while at the parking bay and demanded to meet Air India Express officials. He said they had embarked on their journey from Bahrain about two hours behind the scheduled time of 6.30 PM (IST) last night. At Doha, there was a delay of over three hours and they were told there was some technical problem, following which the flight was taken to Mumbai. The passengers were then shifted to another flight and brought to Kochi at 9 AM this morning.

After a delay of over three hours and change of cabin crew, the passengers were taken to Kozhikode by 1245 PM, he said. Another passenger Ismail said there were four pregnant women, children and a man in wheelchair in the flight.

Three other flights from Jeddah, Dubai and Sharjah bound for Kozhikode, were also diverted here this morning following bad weather. They later landed at Kozhikode.

AIE no more safe. I wish what has happened to Kingfisher Airlines should have  happened to AIE. Kingfisher was at least safe and was on time. This so called budget airline always in news for wrong reasons.

While there is no excuse for bad service from AIE, passengers must remember that they do not control the weather and it is in the interest of passenger safety that a flight is diverted to an alternate airport.
At a time like this when AI is soundly bashed by Gulf-based Indians, I would like to remind them of those days when during the various Gulf wars (Kuwait-Iraq etc.) AI stood by them and flew hundreds of evacuation flights for them and their staff worked tirelessly day and night to bring them home. Public memory is short indeed and gratitude is not everlasting. Perhaps that was an earlier generation.

Delayed or Diverted. This has become a common news with AIE. The problem is not with the AIE. The problem is with we people who chose to fly by AIE. All most all airports in Kerala have other flights flying to our airports. Then why are we chosing to fly by unsafe AIE. People should not only avoid, by stop flying by AIE. Then only they will understand the importance of good service.

This is the normal practice adopted by AIE Management so far to send passengers by bus to their final destination seating Crew Members Duty Norms as per Indian Civil Aviation Rules. Since Kerala State applied for new Kerala Air Lines License to DGCA, AIE will continue to show their step motherly treatment to Kerala bound passengers is the outcome of this.

Secondly AIE Management never express their gratitude towards passengers, even after passengers spending so many hours in one such journey like, reporting 2 hours before departure, 2 to 3 hours flight delay, 3 to 4 hours flying hours, 1 hour minimum to collect luggage, in fact in total a passenger has to devote 9 to 12 hours just for 3 to 4 hours journey by AIE.

But again due to bad weather condition, if they have to travel by bus for another 3 to 4 hours means, passengers are doing “Sabarimala Yatra” instead of Gulf Traveling. But one more thing we have to understand that, this is the outcome of their own Union Problems which is widely popular only in States like Kolkata and Kerala. So they are bound to taste their own medicine only

Good and sensible comment by Derek. Due to lack of modern technology it is difficult to make your own decision as it is a matter of life and death. I remember a couple of years back I was on a flight from Dubai to JFK New York and it was snowing heavily but the pilot made a safe landing at JFK. It was all because of modern landing systems.

All these problems are only for Air India Express..!!!! Is it a poor maintenance issue..!!!???? Sometimes although these things can not be controlled, but food and water for the passengers can be easily served.

I have been following news of weather related airline delays in India for the last few years as I do work at the eight busiest airport in USA.

Unfortunately this happens only in India. and Air India is NOT to be blamed, but rather the AAI for lack of upgraded ILS (INSTRUMENT LANDING SYSTEMS). which has three categories.

The CAT of ILS depends on 2 things: RVR and Decision height.
RVR is the Runaway visual range, and it's how far you can see on horizontal plane (assuming that you are on the runaway it says how many feet you can see). The DH is the altitude when the pilot must see the runaway lights, else he must abort the landing. The categories are:

    CAT I: DH>200 ft, RVR>2400 ft
    CAT II: 100 ft< DH <200 ft, RVR> 1200 ft
CAT III: in general DH<100 ft and RVR<700 ft, but there are different sub-classes ABC. CAT III C dosn't require and DH or RVR, an aircraft with CAT IIIc can landing with NO VISUAL , ONLY USING INSTRUMENTS.

Most of the airports in the West/East have CAT III ILS and that is why it can be used even in the worst of snow storms/blizzards/zero visibility

Hence it's high time India upgraded the ILS from I to III cat to avoid delays. It will not only improve the ON-TIME but also give the airlines/airports a better IMAGE/NAME.

In the US, the FAA rule is that you get refund for any delay for over fours ( subject to conditions0. The same rules should be upgraded in India, so that the onus will also be on the airline to depart/reach ON TIME. Which airline will not like to get a good record and improve thier image ??

But the upgrade work has to start from the Airport (AAI) which the airlines can then integrate the same into thier systems.

Things to do before taking a flight on Air India Express ( Funny)

    1. Buy a large Travel Insurance cover

    2. Prepare a Will and handover the same to your successors

    3. Visit your near and dear ones (coz it could be your last visit )

    4. Eat well ( Especially Dukkar & Chivas, you will surely miss them in heaven or hell)

    5. Pray to God for a Safe Crash.

Shanu, We have only one flight going direct to Mangalore. If you travel via Mumbai or Bangalore (always problem with delayed baggage)then you have to wait 4-7 hours.
As long as our ministers will rule any public enterprise this will happen.....
