Rs 820 Not Out : Shankarpura Jasmine Creates All Time Record

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi

Udupi, Oct 29 : Here's one consistent in-form player in the world of flowers. Shankarpura Jasmine which is popular around India and abroad has created a new record, by maintaining its price at Rs 820 per bunch for the seventh consecutive days. Never in history has the price been maintained so high for over a week's period.

The main reason for the stability in price is said to be the arrival of Dasara and Bakrid festivals within three days of each other.

Usually, jasmine has huge demand from Mumbai on a daily basis and also during festivities. But this time, more demand has come from Kerala.

Shankarpura Jasmine is not only the commercial crop of Shankarpura - Pangala, but also of surrouding areas like Shirva, Udyavar, Katapady, Pernal, Mudarangady, Belman and others.

Due to inconsistency in weather, jasmine cultivation was less compared to previous years, says a family from Shankarpura. "This time monsoon was not consistent, and sporadic rains were around until last week. When the price is high, production is less," says the family.

Shankapura Jasmine is now become famous in Kerala also as many traders from Kerala directly come to Udupi to buy the flowers in bulk.

Some of the flower vendors sell jasmine for Rs 1,000-1,500 per bunch during the peak season.

    Mr. Sachidananda Shetty,

Pls dont comment for the heck of it.. I would like to ask you how many jasmine growers you have seen using child labour. I am born and brought up in a jasmine growers family and for more than 25years now I have not seen anybody using child labour. Please make your facts right. Family members and children working in their own jasmine garden is not called as child labour. until and unless they are forced to do so with cruelty.

    Dear Mr Tauro
You don't want me to 'name' them do you? Did I write anything about 'monopoly' of beautiful Jasmines? They may be there in all communities-Yes. I was only recollecting 'my' hey days and 'my' association with 'Christian Jasmines'...Now being matured I regret having seen them as belonging to a particular 'Community'. Jasmines are Jasmines and are beautiful !Read my comment more carefully Tauro Sir and also my regret! Many were walking and talking 'Angels', pure n with unmatched beauty! Also all had names linked to flowers ....

What do you mean by "Christian Jasmines?" I have seen and still see beautiful Jasmines and even Roses being grown (and brought up) in all communities. These are not the monopoly of any particular community.

I have lived in the area of jasmine cultivation for long time and seen how this crop income supplments the income of middle class/poor class people without creating hindrance to education of young children. In fact these chiritian families helped ohers to persue education by supplementing income.Jasmine crop/flower plucking work at home completes mostly by 9.30 a m without effecting school working hrs in the area.We have seen how the beedi rolling has helped thousands of families in their daily bread during 1970/80s.So now the jasmine crop.If the matter of child labour comes here also then god only the rescue.

Hidden truth is nobody forced 'underage poor children' to work as they were not interested to get educated and lack of family support. They were happy to earn pocket money and got the taste of labour. most of them are in construction jobs and earning good money.
Child labour was way of life those days including jasmine farmers children used get up early to pick all kinds of commercial flowers, go home have breakfast and then go to school.
Business is always done at the cost of others.

let the smile comes to the hardworking people who grow these plants, feed them, sprays chemicals to get rid of pests, get up early morning 5.30 a.m. they feel happy when the white blossom shines. no one looks for the price when they celebrate, worship. they buy with love and faith. god bless them with happiness.one day it will be in bombay stock exchange. look for the high price... be glad..it should reach 1500 rupees per atte(4 chendoo or 400 flowers. god bless jasmine growers.

I beg to differ with an ignorant reader who calls the children helping their parents is child labour. Not everyone is born with a silver spoon in the mouth!!! To my knowledge, none of the people who are born and brought up in and around shankerapura have ever complained it as child labour. On the contrary, shankerapura's children are better educated than the reader's area.
Shankerapura’s days as hub of Jasmine cultivation are numbered. The present generation is not much interested in the cultivation. The climate change and the pollution especially the dust from the nearby coal factory is a great threat to the jasmine plants.
Unless the government and local bodies take immediate steps, these beautiful flowers will become part of history.
The young flower merchant-Denzil Castalino, whose grandfather and father were the flower merchants is not too optimistic about the future of Jasmine flowers.

    Dear Sachidanand,
Just for your information,we Shankeraporeans never asked any schools to extend the opening hours of any schools near to us.If U have read others comments,U will notice that most of us r living with the income of Jasmine flower business. Most of us could afford to go to school & colleges with the income generated from this business.Currently even non chritians have adopted this business. We never force any minor children to get involved in this work.Mostly it is managed by family members.I am very proud to mention here that my Uncle Mr.Albert Castelino is one of the main agent in Shankerapura. It is he who initiated to send flowers to Bombay to distribute them to many Hindu hotels in Bombay during 1960s.My Uncle has helped many families by giving advance to those families who were delivering flowers to him.

Thanks to grandpa who is one of the pioneers to bring jasmines to Shankerpura .In 1960s we had about 100 plants and that was the main source of income. Mother though in her 90s now still makes effort to take care of the handful of plants that are there around the house. it is such a nostalgia to hear about my beloved pangla and the jasmines.

The jasimine cultivation on those days (1970's), helped our family to survive as we had no other resources. There is lots of hard work required. But I am sad that still the amount paid to cultivaters is far less than what the agents are making by just selling it.

Jasmine / Mallige from Pangla / Shankerpura are very famous. Many families today are entirely dependent on Mallige. However not much support from Govt. Ptenting the Mallige is a important step in preserving and protecting the grower's interest. A RC Priest introduced Mallige to the region. Today families irrespective of the community grow Mallige and support the family income. Daiji please do a news article on Mallige and a TV series.

Everybody praises Christian Families for Jasmine Garden but hidden truth is they use underage poor children from their locality for preparation of Jasmine Maala Bunches whereby depriving these children their basis education since they are lured with lucrative business. They even opposed the change in school timing proposed by Udupi District for early start of school hours since most of the Jasmine bunches are being made in early morning time only. Do your business, we welcome the idea but pls not at others cost

Yes,it is the Christian families who have developed the jasmine commercial crop for livelihood through hard work for sevral years.Jasmine cultivation mainly needs consistant attention throughout.Crop deminishes only during heavy raining.Bumper crop is during extreme summer.I understand that even twenty healthy plants can feed the small family.Interestingly unlike any other commercial crops jasimine growers are zero debt families as all most all families are not depenedent on bank finance or otherwise to maintain the crop.
