Bantwal, Oct 29: A young boy was electrocuted by a high tension wire at Kolnad Vittal here on Monday October 29. The deceased has been identified as Mohammed Jazeel (11), son of Hameed and Shameera, residents of Parthipady.

Jazeel was returning home after watching the JCB machine work that was going on a little distance away from his house, when he accidentally stamped on a snapped high tension wire that was lying on the ground.

It is learnt that the boy died on the spot. One of his relatives rushed to the spot on hearing him scream, and took him to the hospital where he was pronounced brought dead.

Jazeel was a student of Yettukallu Govt Higher Primary School.

The locals alleged that the negligence of the Mescom officials had led to his death, as the wire was cut off early morning and no officials turned up to clear it. As the news spread, a large crowd gathered from the neighbouring areas and protested.

The locals demanded a visit by the Mescom junior engineer Satish Sapalya to the spot, and when he arrived, had a heated argument with him and lineman Naveen D’Souza who rushed to the spot.

The officials claimed that they were not aware of the wire lying on the ground, as they did not receive any complaint. However, the people were not convinced.

The locals demanded appropriate compensation from Mescom. The deceased boy’s father has filed a complaint with the Vittal police that the death of his son was due to the negligence of Mescom as the wires were not changed for a long time and had hence snapped.

A case has been booked against Salethoor Mescom junior engineer and the lineman.

Vittal assitant executive engineer Yashwanth visited the spot and promised to compensate the family for their loss.

Abdul Hameed and Shameera have three children, of whom Jazeel was the second.

    Mescom people are rude & least bothered.though they know about the danger of hanging or loose wires , they don't turn up to fix or repair them .strict actions should be taken against such people.

    Question to Mescom Engineers is,Why the breaker did not trip when the ground fault happened. This shows utility is least worried about public safety by not updating equipments. Many a times the trees are problems. Inform Mescom and they ask us to inform MCC public safety engineers. Ask MCC and they keep dragging their butt. These horses do not care whose life goes.

    @Leslie Lobo, Mangalore....
    I fully agree with you. Even though the Mescom people know the dangers of such hanging or loose wires & even after deaths becoz of their faults they will not bother about it until such time the tragedy happens to their own family members. In this incident, MESCOM should be booked under murder case & the responsible officials should be put behind
    bars immediately. Then only they will know the value of common man's life.

    WE CLAIM TO BE HI TECH AND PROGRESSIVE BUT SUCH INCIDENTS PROVE THAT WE ARE STILL VERY VERY PRIMITIVE. WE HAVE POWER LINES RUNNING ABOVE GROUND EVERYWHERE AND THIS COULD REPEAT ANYTIME AND ANYWHERE. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO SAFETY AND PRECAUTION AND GOD ONLY HAS TO SAVE US.

    As per safety standards, MESCOM is expected to do a thorough supervision and inspection of high tension cables at the itme of installation irrespective of whether they are located in populatd area or remote areas. Only then they should be certified for energising. Thereafter, there is a need for periodic inspection to ensure that there is no deterioration in the system over a period of time. If MESCOM has failed to do, starting from the top official, all persons down theline should be prosecuted as per Industrial Act and should be put behind bars as minimum punishment for violation of safety requirement. If this is not done many more such Mohammeds will lose their lives. Remember it may be our relation next time.

    Mescom is fully responsible for this incident. Gross negligence which has cost a human life, very sad. May the Almighty giver of life grant him(Jazeel) eternal bliss.

    Our public works is totally irresponsible. They dig up the concrete and then dont even fill it up, instead put a stick or a dead plant in it so that vehicles and pedestrians need to be aware. This kind of rotten government should be kicked.
