Mangalore: Saffron Worth Rs 30 Lac Seized at Airport - Two Arrested

Update

Mangalore, Nov 3: In a major haul, the officials at the Mangalore International Airport on Saturday November 3 reportedly seized saffron estimated at Rs 25 lac.

It is learnt that two persons from Kerala have been arrested in this connection.

The arrested have been identified as Mohammed Ali (40), and Vijaynagar Ahmed Nizar (33), both from Nellikunje, Kasargod. They arrived by the early morning flight from Dubai on Saturday.

Also, 3,700 memory cards, valued at Rs 3.7 lac have also been recovered from them. The total value of the seized items is Rs 28.7 lac.

It is said that the saffron, sourced from Iran, was packed in a carton under layers of food items, while the memory cards were wrapped in carbon paper which cannot be detected by the scanner during checking. Hence, they were cleared by the customs.

As many as 500 saffron packets, each of 25 grams were found on Mohammed Ali, while the memory cards and the remaining saffron were with Nizar.

They were frequent fliers to Dubai, hence it is suspected that they might have smuggled in saffron or other items earlier too.

The directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI) officials are investigating further.

The officials at the Aiport are tight-lipped on the matter and have declined to divulge further details.

    Dear all Readers,
Saffron is not a drug. Then why so much of issues. This kind of news is diverting peoples mind from crouption news. Focus on clearing corruption from our country. Corruption is more dangerous to our country, not smugling saffron. This can be stopped at any moment of time if corruption is under control.

I think this time there was wrong calculations. This would have been happening always and this time was a miscalculation, Mite be the person who took the money for Customs was off duty or there was a dispute on the Share amount among the Customs official. I would not believe that the guys who brought from Dubai has not done any setting with the Customs. All the Customs inspectors need to questioned and for sure the truth will come out. Then we can have a difference. Very to sad that the whole system is corrupt.

By seeing the safforn package & memory card it is difficult to believe that the items are original or of superior quality. Maximum worth may be Rs 2.5 lakhs.

If they follow all sorts of mechanism available in modern days especially those equipment or scanners installed in all International Airports, not even fly can evade security, customs or emigration checks at all. But apparently, in many occasions these mechanisms are being utilized by those few corrupt Officers at Airport to make money in their personal account instead of ex-chequer. When dealing goes well, nothing will be d to media regarding their catch. But when people resort to protest or unwillingness to cough up more bribe money than actual customs duty, this sort of coverage from Customs Officials comes in to picture.

Security and officials are always 'tight' at International Airports. Sorry 'mixed' the two! Officials are always 'tightlipped' when they catch and after they catch! They can't let it 'slip' you see!
