Chennai, Nov 3: Bodies of all five sailors, who went missing after an oil tanker ran aground off the city beach hours before cyclone 'Nilam' made landfall on November 1, have been recovered.

While four bodies were recovered yesterday, one more was found washed ashore near Minjur coastal area early this morning, police said.

Joman and Krishnachandra

Joman Joseph (23), resident of Badiyadka, P C Krishnachandra (23), resident of Udama (both from Kasargod), Niranjan of Tamil Nadu, Jayadev from Belgaum and Raj Ramesh from Mumbai were among the missing.

Joman Joseph (23), elder son of K J Joseph and Molly is a resident of Badiyadka. He joined work at a company in Andhra Pradesh after his father quit his job in a ship.

P C Krishnachandra (23) is the son of P P Shekar, manager at Uduma cooperative bank, and Rama, teacher at Uduma Government School.

The five went missing after their lifeboat capsized in choppy waters while 16 were rescued by local fishermen and one drowned on Wednesday. Fifteen sailors were rescued on Thursday from the ship, which had a crew of 37 on board.

The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), which ordered a preliminary probe into the incident, will soon begin salvage operations of the ship, belonging to Mumbai-based Pratibha Shipping Company.

The salvage operation is likely to start from November 7, the Directorate said last night.

The Madras High Court had yesterday ordered that the vessel not be moved out of Chennai Port until further orders.

Normally, when a storm is hitting the coast all ships in the vicinity are asked to move out and away from the path.Even ships in the port are asked to move out. This is normal procedure.I don't understand where this ship was because it is common knowledge for a Captain.Such an instance happened at Kandla a few years ago and a few ships sank in the port area.Somehow we never learn from past mistakes.

It is sad that a few sailors perished in Madras. May their souls RIP.

Really felt sorry for our friends!! My point is why the master anchor...even if knowing that the cyclone will be making landfall...why he never went to deep sea!!and how come only six persons left in the boat that capsize....were they not following orders from master....Abandon ship!!as we all know that the ship it self is the safest life boat at sea!!!untill it is in grave danger!!!

Even though the ship sent out repeated distress signals and requests for help - the Navy, the Coast Guard & other maritime agencies failed to respond. During hurricane sandy the rescue authorities in the US did fantastic work braving the full fury of the hurricane. Our rescue authorities were shit scared, lazy and sleeping - Sic. Most of the survivors were rescued by poor BRAVE fishermen who risked their own lives.

Now the ship’s Captain is being blamed for this avoidable tragedy instead of the ship’s owners who abandoned the ship. This is because as per media reports Pratibha Shipping Company belongs to the mega crook Sharad Pawar. Per today’s TOI report, sailors aboard another ship stranded of the Chennai coast also belonging to Pratibha Shipping are STARVING.

May God give strength and courage to the families of these young sailors to get over this tragedy.

In spite of having effective radio technology in each ships and advance warning from weather department, this Ship entered the storm area may be due to negligence or overconfidence of Ship Captain. So, Captain of this Ship should be prosecuted for human losses. Same time let us altogether pray for their soul who lost their lives courageously.

heartfelt sympathies and condoleances to families of departed sailors.

Pratiba Shipping is owned by India's powerful Sri Sharadji Powerji the enquiry ordered by DGS is useless. Sailors families cant expect justice here.
Enquiry commission is only waste of public money and white wash for feelings of effected families.
