Mangalore, Nov 8: In the wake of the arrest of journalist Naveen Soorinje in the home stay attack case, members of the print and visual media along with others protested in front of the deputy commissioner's office here on Thursday November 8.

A memorandum was submitted to district commissioner Dr N S Chennappa Gowda on the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, Taranath Kapikad of Janshree media claimed that police intentionally arrested Soorinje mainly to get rid of an eyewitness to the incident.

"The state government should soon intervene in the matter and take appropriate action," he urged.

Kapikad further said that a reporter's job is only to do his work and not work as an informer to the police. "It is the responsibility of the police to find out about such incidents," he said.

Pushparaj Jain, bureau chief of Vartha Bharathi said that the arrest was made for no reason by the police. "The arrest is against the principles of freedom of expression. The case against Naveen Soorinje should be withdrawn immediately," he said.

P B Harish, president of district working journalists' union said, "Police have registered case against a reporter who went to report the home stay attack. They have even filed an FIR and produced him in court and remanded him in judicial custody. It is just not fair," he said.

"I have spoken to chief minister Jagadish Shettar, district incharge minister C T Ravi, and JD(S) state president H D Kumaraswamy on this issue. The reporter who went to perform his duty is being prosecuted, which is not right," he added.

"At the time of the home stay incident, cases were filed against journalists, and when the journalists' union took up the issue, we were assured of a positive response, and even a committee was formed with both journalists and police officials. However, the police have failed to keep up their word. The journalists' union condemns this action and demands re-investigation of the case," he said.

Ivan D’Souza, KPCC secretary also spoke on the occasion and blamed the state government for the arrest of Naveen Soorinje.

I am just wondering the days are nearing in which a group of 25 people molest a group of females along with a Media man who accompanies those molesters and says he is innocent .Here if the molesters are innocent so is is this Media person if molesters are criminals so is this media person .More over if those 2 girls are mentally shocked it is due to this media man .In fact as per the Immoral traffic act pertains to RECORDING AND BROADCASTING IMMORAL SCENES .The Load of Crime is more on this media person than those Molesters .If he was so Law abiding he would have recorded and just given to High Court only not to anybody else .in UK one Mangalore based Doctor was punished just for recording private scene of a Female

Political influence is not ruled out.... But these guys are giving moral support as did by Lawyers when Mediamen & Lawyers fought at Bangalore... Lawyers come to street when a lawyer was killed... Lawyers just show of strength and call all to boycott arguing culprits if they commit anything to lawyers.... I just ask a question ? Either Lawyers or Mediamen - are they came from heaven ? They are also born like other human beings or not ???

One of my junior in degree who was suspended by Principal for all his misdeeds is a Proud Practising Lawyer at High Court Bangalore....

My dear all Mediamen.... Please wait for Soorinje's trial... Let the truth come out...

I just object the event convenors to put board PRESS... Let them bring news sitting with other usual audience... They should work like HARIKAARS of the past...

Hello Kiran Achrya, you first verify what you write. you say barging into private property, and molesting is a crime. How could it was possible that this incident came to light without being recorded by Naveen soorinje. He infact ask them not to attack the girls. His motive was to cover the matter not to expose it. If this was a crime then recording the MLA's watching porn was also a crime.
I think Your respect for others rights and privileges are limited to only a particular group that protested infront of DC office infavour this incient .
Do you think Naveen soorinje has to wait till the police come to scene and then record what the HJV activist say. The HJV removed clothes of girls and then said to the police that the girls were half naked

Mediamen should realize that they are humans first, journalists next. Whatever the truth, whatever the ideology, respecting others rights and privileges come first, before they talk of freedom of expression, lest we head towards anarchy.
If Barging into a private property by molesting group is a crime, so is the act of trespassing  and video recording that act!

It is high time that the journalists and public put full pressure on the government to release Naveen and bring to justice home stay attackers without any partiality with immediate effect.

Naveen should also claim damages from the govt. for the pain it has caused him, so that such incidents dont take place, and journalists can perform their duties without any fear of oppression as per the law of the land.

Close all the media for a day so that the goverment and the law enforcement should know how the media works. They are shivering to arrest real culprits.

This is the famous daily slogan of Police: phuksate thikk'nda, police panpe
naay*** maga ninnan etthe ulaai paadpe jaasthi paathernda.

Mr. Naveen Soorinje has not escaped and very easy and did not defied arrest. He was laughfingly going inside because he knows he did his job.

How could the High Court justice asked checks shirt fellow?! Because of media.

This is totally wrong ded by DK police. we were hoping Mr. Manish Karbikar will do the right thing, but seems to be police are doing their gundagiri. what is the reason for naveen's arrest? just because he dint inform police? (though he did) is there any law that he should have informed police? then every single citizen should be arrested whi witness 100 of crimes in daily life.. Dk police have a good name but which is shadowed by these deeds.. shame on them , very disappointed

To me freedom of media : objective way of presenting any incident should not biased or one sided.
This also mean that any incident should not be instigated by the media when presenting to the public. Many of the incidents and issues are presented by only because media is present and publicity purpose with vested interest.
If media has instigated in Home Stay attack then, media is responsible for the damage caused. If police is not responsible to act on act (while media called police emergency and police not attended their calls) then police takes the responsibility.
Of course when presenting to the public media need to use due diligence else information to respect privacy of the people involved. Yet times, exposing too much of private information not recommended.
It is high time for Media and communication minister outline for media people to present guidelines in the interest of public at large.

They want to kill the Negative Publicity given by the Media to this Saffron Government at the same time they want to cover up the True color of Police Personnel who act as Politicians Servant.

Was this Media Reporter intrested in prevention of the attack or publicity of the event ? If he was so innocent, he could have tried to prevent it by informing the Police, just as he came to know the chances of attack.
Police should bring this media guy to law, as there is a quote in our law "Silent amounts to acceptance".
