Mangalore, Nov 12: The residents of Kadri-Shivbagh area went on a unique protest here on Monday November 12, literally 'begging' for money to repair their roads!

The residents have long been demanding repair of the roads in the area and provision of basic amenities like proper street lights, garbage maintenance, bus stop and cover for overflowing drains. For the last 15 years the roads in the area have not been repaired, claim the residents.

Tired of the negligence and apathy of corporators despite repeated appeals, the residents finally decided to bring some innovation into their protest.

The protesters said that the residents have been suffering for the past ten years and have undertaken many agitations and protests, and submitted pleas and memorandum, but the local representatives have failed to sort out their problems.

"But enough is enough. This time we have planned to solve our problems by protesting in a different manner by begging in the streets for money to undertake the repair works. This way we want to give a clear and sarcastic signal to the local representatives that we are fed up of their indifference," he said.

The residents collected the money from shops, auto drivers and from pedestrians to set right the condition of Kadri Shiva Bagh 34th ward themselves.

Its really shame on the officials to ignore their responsibility for such a long time even after protesting many times. There is surely a game here otherwise such a prime location is left out when other roads not as famous as shivabagh have been repaired.

Protest on street will not yield any result.
Only when minister's arrive into the city the authority people patch up the pot hole.
its during that time people should not allow the authority to do the patch work and the minister who is coming suffers the same road condition.
    thats the best remedy.

I do agree that we the residents of Mangalore have to start protesting and form a Residents Association and try and do the work of the Corporation. However, I strongly feel that the Association should protest and stop paying the taxes and route that amount towards the repairs. By begging or raising funds, we are just permitting the corrupt officials to misutilise our hard earned money paid as taxes.

Corporator/mCC should come out with right expalnation for the bad roads,Garbage and drainage problems. The planning is very bad MCC persons are inexperienced and corrupt. Could they publish who are the contractos and how much money has been alloted for the work. All the works should be monitored and certified by reputed NGO's after complition of the job.
Can we have best road (1 or 2 KM's length) compition by involving all youth clubs, lions ,Rottery clubs. Every Diwali there should be prizes to the best roads of Manglore for those clubs who sponsor the roads. Media should also involve in educating the people. We together can make our Mangalore one of the best model city.

The protest organised by Gerard Towers was really unique no doubt, its a shame & insult to "lipstick madam". Quite a few residents were personally informed by Gerard and Arun to join the same but they did not respond adequately to their humble request. Its true all cant be informed at short notice.
I am the Sardar in the photos that you are seeing, and, was really shocked to see that many of the residents passing by in their so called "expensive" cars did not have the curtesy to stop and enquire as to what was happening, they seemed to turn a blind eye to the gathering. Its these middle class people who protest against the corporators to have the roads repaired, and when the roads are repaired, the residents travelling in their "expensive" cars ZOOM around with no respect to the pedestrians .....God bless them. Towers & party, you have done a wonderful job to awaken the residents of Shivabagh by your unique protest. I also agree with Alwynalok's comments. If Gerard Towers is given good support and backing he will truely become the towering inferno of Mangalore City Corporation.

Dear friends though I live in shivbhaga behind Petrol pump Sanjay Appartment,I am not aware of this protest,if informed we could have tried to bring in more people.Any protest the size of the gethering matters and the cause, the cause is really right,no doubt Gerald Tower,Arun and their friends have real concern for the development of shivbhaga roads and it is true that shivbhaga is a posh area and good number of doctors, businessmen, estate owners live hear.I would like tell hear that we too the residence of shivbhagh live in the area just behind the petrol pump have approched the city commisioner, local corporator and appraised the road condition and answer given to us to wait till the monsoon gets over. Dear friends it is not that no one tries or protest,it has become a habit with the corporation or for that matter any city corporation,no responsiblity, only blame game,no accountability,at the time of election only they wake up. so what we need to do,only talking or protesting can not bring changes,we have to involve ourselves into decision making, form our local association to fight for our needs, elect the right candidate as corporater, hold him/her resposible from the day one elected, constantly remind them of their promises they made when they came to ask our vote, these are our responsibilities, dear friends and residence of shivbhaga area hence forth let us join our hands and fight for our rights, We all have our right to live in style and comfort not only in our homes but outside, good roads, clean roads, plastic and litter free area we want. We all love clean Mangalore city, clean Shivbhaga.

The beggar-like protest was meaningful that would touch the appropriate officials. This century began with a negligence on the part of M.C.C.towards Shivabagh residents.Since then all officials inspected and assured repairs of roads, drainage leak etc.But alas!! Instead, the area has become,"Vasane bagh" and "dusty bagh" rather green one.At 7 a.m and 7 p.m daily the road overflows with drainage waste causing stink all over the area. Who is responsible for this? Can the increase of mosquitoes and related diseases be contained? Pumping or permitters for pumping without knowing the aftermath is not affected ,however. Do the authorities wait for Thumbe episode(for water supply) for repair of drainage at Shivabagh?

Gerard, after reading the news in daijiworld and the comments from various people, I feel that a proper and more organised protest is required. If the residents were not aware of this move initiated by you and other members of the ward, I feel that you try to visit more houses and get personal opinion from them to make them join and submit a memorandum to the concerned authorities. A crowd of at least 100-150 is would be more effective to support the cause. There are more than 500 (fi not less) houses in this ward and if one member from each family joins, the protest will have more effect. It may be easy for me to suggest from Muscat, but if I was there would have joined hands with you, coz we have done this once before in protest of garbage dumping at Lower Bendore, First Cross Road, initiated by Mr. Miranda.

I see only few people protesting why not the whole Shivabagh community ? It is high time we all start protesting in our own way because problems are not just in Shivabagh but all over Mangalore. Most of our elected representatives who call themselves City Corporators are not showing any interest towards their wards. All parties involved are busy playing politics rather than attending to the needs of Mangaloreans. They may wake up little late just before the next elections. It is a pity.

Protests on roads have yielded no results. Individuals and groups of residents have pleaded with District Commissioner and Corporation Commissioner to improve certain basic requirements such as roads, drainage, lights etc bearing no fruits.Digusted with their attitude and no help from our Corproator we the residents of Attavar / Milagres / Falnir are left with no alternative but to form an Resident Association and get it registered. Once the Association is registered all Government offices are answerable to this registered body. Formation of our Association is in the final stage. Those of you who would like to form a Resident Association, kindly phone Mr. Dionysius D'Sa Mobile 9449259020. Let us make ourselves aware of our rights and fight for our it.
