Mangalore, Nov 15: The Mangalore Institute of Oncology (MIO), a multi-speciality cancer hospital at Pumpwell will be inaugurated on Sunday November 18 at 10 am," said Dr Suresh Rao, director of MIO.

Addressing a press meet here on Thursday November 15, he said, "Cancer is a disease that is increasing at an alarming rate. A group of oncologists have come together to start a multi-speciality cancer hospital in Mangalore. This hospital is dedicated for the treatment of only cancer, of all types and stages."

The hospital is equipped with the new Rapid Arch treatment equipment, an imported machine that is only the second to be imported and used in India, the first being in Yashodha hospital, Hyderbad. "The basic idea is to give a multi-specialty treatment to cancer patients, at a low and affordable cost," he added.

"Ninety percent of the cancer disease is preventive and cureable. It is always better to prevent cancer rather than to find a way to cure it. It is necessary to create awareness among the public in this regard. Surgery, chemotheraphy and rehabilitation facilities are available in the hospital. Cancer education cell has also been set up to educate students with the idea of creating awareness on preventive measures and the ways to do it. Government and private colleges have also been asked to join hands in the cause," he said.

The inauguration will be done by representatives from Cancer Victors, along with Prof Dr M Abdul Rahiman, former vice-chancellor, Calicut and Kannur Universities, Prof Dr M Vijayakumar, director, Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bangalore, and Amith Yadav, general manager, Yuvraj Singh Foundation. The programme will be presided over by Prof Dr M Shantharam Shetty, pro chancellor, Nitte University.

Dr Krishna Prasad and Dr Sanath Hegde, directors of MIO and Dr Naveen, pain and palliative specialist were also present.

Just returned from the inaugural ceremony. It was a wonderful experience to hear the eminent doctors speak on the subject.

Generally most of the functions everywhere are marked by the presence of dozens of politicians and priests. This was a unique ceremony where none of them were present and the inauguration was done by cancer victors and Senior guest doctors and speeches were delivered by relevant people who were really worth listening to.

YOUWECAN (Yuvaraj foundation did a touching powerpoint presentation on Yuvaraj. Dr. Shanthram Shetty sharing his own experience as a cancer victor would boost anyone's morale, patient or not.

So far, Mangaloreans had to go to other cities for various tests on cancer. It is a blessing that the state of the art technology is made available at our own city by these young visionary doctors.

My prayers and best wishes to them for their mission.

Some common cancers can require highly specialised interventions at certain points along the care pathway. In addition, although some rare cancers may be treated with non specialised treatments, other rare cancers will always require specialist attention. A joint approach has to be adopted – specialised cancer services will be defined by two lists – one listing specialised services and interventions, and the other representing uncommon/rare cancers.
The move to open a Multi-specialty Cancer Hospital is welcomed because more common cancers patients will commonly be referred to tertiary centers and consequently there needs to be strategic planning of all cancer services.
    Congratulations and all the best!

Best of Luck to the hospital, I wish they will bring back lives from the mouth of fate. I am very grateful to Dr Sanath hegde who had treated my mother some years back. However she is no more but she lived more than 5 years as other doctors said she will live for few months.
