Mangalore, Nov 20:
Construction labourers were trapped in a landslip that occured at a hillock at Derebail, Konchady behind AJ Hospital here on Tuesday November 20.

The labourers were employed with K2K construction company.

Varduth Mondel (52) from West Bengal lost his life in the incident.

Among the injured are Subhash (50), Shankaramma (50), Nazrulla Sheik (32), Sharful Biswas (50), Shilpa (17) and Najibulla Huda (22).

Fire squad personnel were able to rescue six labourers in all. Among them, Nazbul Shah is said to be critical.

The workers were said to be engaged in the task of constructing a retaining wall for a building when the incident occured.

The work began at around 9 am. A few were working above the hillock while women labourers were working below. More than 15 labourers were engaged in shifting the stones from one place to another. The landslide occurred at around 11.45 am. Three labourers were stuck in the soil completely while 4 others were partially trapped up till the neck.

Fire brigade rushed to the spot and the rescue operation lasted for one-and-a-half hours. MLA Krishna Palemar, DC Dr N S Channappa Gowda, ADC Dayanand, MCC commissioner Dr Harish Kumar also visited.

Permit suspended

Around 28 men and 12 women labourer were at work. Among these 15 were working at the spot where the landslide occurred. Mangalore City Corporation temporarily suspended the construction permit and demanded details of the incident from the owner.

Thirst saved them

Many of the women had a lucky escape as they moved away to drink water to quench their thirst. They were shocked to hear cries for help by those who were stranded in the soil.

Assistant commissioner Venkatesh who arrived at the spot said that a probe would be ordered to check if any safety norms had been violated by the construction company, and that further action would be taken based on the result of the investigation. He added that close to 40 labourers were employed with the company at the construction site. Many of them were brought to the city from Manipal where they were working earlier.

The injured have been shifted to a hospital. The incident occurred in Kadri police station limits.

Government, municipal officials and politicians arrive at the scene AFTER yes AFTER the disaster occurs. What were all these people doing before. Is there no advocate worth his salt in Mangalore who can file a Public Interest Litigation and get these Government, municipal officials and politicians punished so that such incidences do not occur in future. Hillocks have been unscientifically cut at Kankanady opp. Omega, many places in Shaktinagar and also by the side and behind Circuit House!

These poor labourers migrate from other place for a few rupees more as daily wages risking their lives at the hands of these unscrupulous construction people.

The government and police should ensure that the payment of insurance and other payments be made in full to the families of the deceased workers. otherwise there also they will give them half and remaining half they will keep for themselves.

Building licence people should make surprise checks to see if any the builders are following the rules or not. and more than 100% all are violating rules. so we are back to square one.

very sad state of affairs. anyone who will help to set this right ?

Few years back I was watching unsafe working process of a building under construction. I spoke to that contractor about the safety and death situation at that site. His answer in Tulu as follows:"Aye saithanda ayena aamme barpe" With this kind of attitude of contractors regarding migrant workers is leading cause of this type of accidents. I do not know if this contractor is still alive or is dead and replaced by His "AAMME"

I really appreciate fire dept hardwork and save lives whether they belong to Bangaladesh or West bengal.
But point : police needs to isolate the area so that public is not a trouble in getting the job done. I've seen many instances public become trouble for speed operations and getting authories thier job done.

In Mangalore construction activities are in the rise without any safety measures,The builders are not at all worried for the safety of workers they are only worried about their pocket. The MUDA and district administration should take stren action against for the lapses commited by the builders. The licencing authority should give licences with safety clauses, if any builder violates these safety measures the builder should be blacklisted from the construction activities.

Construction companies ! wake up. Govt to check the license. Safety first above all. In gulf countries authorities give utmost importannce to safety. In India also this must be strict. otherwise these poor labourers are suffering. Look after them by giving proper safety please.

Concerned authorities must cancel license to this project.Builder has to be blamed for this ,without providing proper security to the workers. But in India it will happen again and again.Money, politics plays big role than humanity.

the crowd should not be allowed to gather at all .. in cases of emergency, the crowd makes it difficult for help to reach in time . lst time in b'lore there was a major fire in a building n the crowd who gathered jsut to watch was enormous .. n the fire engine could not reach early because dispersing this crowd was not easy , n in India many of us educated also act uncivilised then jus imagine the behaviour of the uneducated ...navu irude hige.... absolutely no safety , whatever it is , no sense of respect to mother earth only greed , n in the name of development try to copy the western concepts wrongly...

Looks more like a fish market than an accident site. No crowd control, no barricades to prevent un-authorised persons from entering the crime scene. The fire-men look like a bunch of amateurs, not only are they just pulling the victims out without proper gloves, they are not putting any sort of neck braces or spine braces on any of the victims. This causes more harm to the victim who may eventually suffer temporary or permanent paralyses. It is time our emergency services rise up to the modern day challenges & improve. Many a time victims die during the rescue operations for lack of proper training of the emergency rescue services.

Accidents Happen. They can be prevented from happening to some extent but cant be avoided completely.
Main issue over there is the emergency response proceedures are not adhered to.
    1. Public infiltration to be avoided as it hinders the fast rescue response from the authorities.
2 Only authorised people to be allowed entry at the incident spot.
Public has blocked most of the way which causes loss of time for both the rescuer and the injured person in getting medical aid.

I have seen a police man handling the victim without wearing gloves who had blood stain. It is very dangerous because it can transmit dissease like HIV, Hepatitis, etc.. I feel that it is better to take precautions when handling Emg cases.

This incident is due to the verticle cutting of the soil and ignorance/non-awarerness of soil excavation procedure/system by the managment of Builder & Contractor.

According to the soil condition they should decide the method of excavation whether step cutting/slope cutting with required angle.

Nope..this is not SKS project...SKS highrise is near KPT junction on the highway..this particular project is by K 2 K builders..this place is actually one of the worst as land slides happen every now and then..exactly opp to Derebail church its got high commercial value so nobody was worried about anything..minimum of 5 time such chota mota problems were faced before while building retaining wall to avoid this but even the wall fell once..

however the wall was completed somehow but only on the backside and not on the other 2 sides..it was definately a time bomb ticking every sec..Shame on the people who granted license here...

I have a running dispute with CPWD which allowed excavation next to my site without following proper slopes. Working as a civil engineer with a reputed multinational consultancy, I had sent them a detailed report quoting British Codes, where they went wrong. I also quoted examples of landslips happened in the coastal belt.
I was surprised to see that CPWD specification does not cover the requirements for permanent excavation.
As usual, nothing has happened since then, but for a court stay order.

If the greedy Land Mafia goes on carving the hills vertically, this is exactly what is going to happen.

Next venue of landslide will be the Derebail side of Konchady hillock.
