Udupi, Nov 22: In the midst of the district administration's order to implement Section 144 and tight police security in the coastal belt of the district; the members of Malpe Fishermen Association staged a protest on Thursday, November 22.

Section 144 was enforced on November 21 and will continue up to December 5. Though the protest was peaceful, all shops in the area were closed and the usually busy harbour wore a deserted look.

During the protest, Malpe Fishermen's Association and the 22 other supporting organizations claimed that they did not receive any assurance from the district administration over the implementation of the Karnataka Marine Fishing (Regulation) Act 1986 which imposes restrictions on fishing in specified areas, and on the number of vessels in specified areas and seasons, and makes registration of vessels compulsory.

They also raised the issue of the violation of ban on illegal fishing of cuttle fish by Tamil Nadu fishermen.

As government representative, MLA Raghupati Bhat said that the previous deputy commissioner had ordered a ban and a notification was given against unscientific fishing of cuttle fish. "But this year it continued because of not enforcing the Act strictly," he said.

"We need a permanent solution for this issue, hence with the approval of state chief secretary and the CM, a new Act will be drafted in time for the next assembly," he said.

He also assured that the new Act will support the local fishermen and will follow a strong coast guard system.

Till the new regulation comes into force, the DC has ordered a revisable ban on any illegal entry of non-booked boats in the area. Gilnet will not be allowed to fish within the12 nautical miles. The order will be revised every 15 days till a new regulation comes to place.

Mr. Rajesh/Kuwait Mr. Raghupathi Bhat is stitting MLA, and the other two are trying to be MLA one was former and now going here and there to see which chair fit him, As for knowledge, no MLA MP in the world knows every aspect neither do we, but as an MLA Mr. Bhat has given enough support to them if not directly but with the Mr. Yashpal , so there is nothing wrong with Mr. Bhat being there as a govt. Representative and it is his right to be there, some give lots of money till election and once they win they will earn in double, coming to the main issue, we should fully support our fishermen as rightly said they never go on strike for petty issues, Jai Ho to them and we are with you though we dont have the knowledge are ready to be with u all in ur march

hello george ,ex nigalna ellag urdagul bathd wanas maltherda eer budpara ya pokade kuluvara , same way , there are some rules and regulation , tamil nadu kerala people can do fishing in their places and cover some nautical miles , instead y they have to come to malpe , malpe fishermans wont go to kerala nor tamilnadu for fishing . i feel laughing looking at your sentence .
"Indian constitution provides Indian citizens rights to live and work anywhere in the country" ex then y passport let all people make world tour every day , were ever they like usa canada brazil france italy dubai oman qatar kuwait . huhhhhhhhh they got right to live and work ur telling , i respect you george before writing some thing check up the law volume no 6 , 126 page , u ll get a brief detail . i respect fisherman lot , coz when i work here i hardly think ll reach bak home safely by the blessing off god , but fishermans life is very dangerous , sorry george if any of my words hurted you . I find this protest by Malpe fishermen undemocratic and against Indian constitution. Sea and port in Malpe is not the sole property of Malpe fishermen. this is also wrong . coz of fishing they survive , jaan ki baziii dheke woh log mehnath se kamane wale log , jai udupi , jai malpe .

This is a long pending issue. Administration need to find an amicable solution to this problem. Just because it is a public Fishing Harbour town, every body available cannot venture in the sea for fish.

Can state government legally ban other state fishermen from fishing? Indian constitution provides Indian citizens rights to live and work anywhere in the country. And sea is not some BDA layout carved by name - any Indian citizen has rights to go fishing as long as he does not catch protected fish.

I find this protest by Malpe fishermen undemocratic and against Indian constitution. Sea and port in Malpe is not the sole property of Malpe fishermen.

Saying Kerala/TN fishermen should not fish in Malpe is like Shiv Sena saying Mangaloreans are not welcome in Bombay.

Sometimes we should blame ourselves. We hire people for fishing from Tamilnadu for cheap labor. Later they inform their people and adventure our area. Unfortunately, there are no scientific boundaries enforced by the central govt. and due to the inefficiency our politicians always a Tamilian will be appointed as a chairman to our port trust. We also lack or not utilized scientific method and technology for fishing.

    Mr. Shankar, Kundapur
This is not neccssary that he will eat fish or not. He must understand the problem and try to solve it. Dr. V.S. Acharya did good job for fishermen community. Don't forget he is also not eating fish.
