Udupi: Plans Afoot to Develop Hejamadi Port; State, Central Teams Inspect

Udupi, Nov 23: The state and central officials visited Hejamadi here on Thursday November 22 to inspect the wok related to the second phase of the construction of Hejamadi port.

Fishermen have time and again demanded the development of the second phase of the Hejamadi minor fisheries port which has long been ignored.

Speaking during the visit, state fisheries department joint director Gangadhar V Madikeri said that along with the construction of breakwater, a jetty too will be built.

"In this regard, two teams from central government have visited to examine the spot. Later in January or February, continuous survey will be made for a period of 10 to 20 days, based on which a project report will be prepared," he said.

"Prior to the construction of the breakwater, a mandatory soil test has been conducted and the same  will be sent to Pune team for testing by the state fisheries department. Based on the soil test report, the breakwater will be constructed," he added.

The reports will be sent to central government through the state and the plan may be implemented by March, he said.

Kandale MD, joint director of Pune CWPRS (Central Water and Power Research Station), Mahalingaih M V, senior research manager, CICIF assistant directors – Belliyappa and Ravishankar Hejamadi, officials of Hejamadi state fisheries and ports department leke Taranath Rathod, MN Kharvi, Vijay Kumar, Ram Bhangera, president of Hejamadi parsin and trawl boat union, secretary Vijay S Bhangera, Vinod Kotian among others were present.

    first you get the roads repaired and think of devoloping a port.lat two years kundapur /mangalore road is not completed.may be contractor not giving commission to to the govt officials and ministers.Entire belt is neglected and govt interested in building new structures where they can make money.

    Infrastructural development that includes building of Ports is very essential for trade and commerce. Very few states in India are blessed with sea ports and its development will have positive impact on our overall economic development. Good move!

    This area comes under CRZ 1 . How can only the Govt. build fishing ports ? Local fishermen / people cannot build houses in CRZ 1 areas .

    The Idea is not bad but two Ports within the vicinity of 30_40 kms of Coastal Area is not a good Idea if you compare the cost of New Port Construction unless they operate the two Ports on different unique purposes. Any how it’s just a proposal but in India it may take another few generations to come up
