Mangalore, Nov 30:
The issue of ban on plastic in the city dominated the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) general meeting held at Mangala auditorium here on Friday November 30.

Speaking at the monthly meeting of MCC, Harinath said that the ban on plastic in the city was effective for some days, but now people have again started using plastics. "If plastics are to be banned completely, then proper awareness should be created in schools and colleges by distributing cloth bags," he said.

Deepak Poojary said that so far, none of the decisions taken by the MCC has been implemented properly. "Though people are not using plastic bags, these days new kinds of bags are hitting the market which too contain certain amounts of plastic. Even this should be banned," he said.

Corporator Naveen D’Souza said that plastic bags were still being sold in some shops. "I don’t see any official taking strict action on these shops," he said, urging the mayor to trace the root where plastics are being manufactured.

On the issue of collection of segregated plastic from houses, Harinath said that so far no move has started and asked mayor Gulzar Banu about the implementation of the plan.

In response, MCC commissioner Harish said that necessary tenders have been passed to collect waste and the same would be implemented within a few days. "We will also provide a helpline number where people can contact if waste is not collected from their house," he added.

About the new kind of plastic hitting the market, he said any kind of bag which contains  plastic is illegal and banned.

Construction of Toll Gate Opposed

Revathi K briefed about the upcoming toll gates being constructed near NITK and Suratkal. She said that it was illegal as minimum distance between toll gates should be at least 80 km. "This will also create problems to the locals as they will have to keep on paying toll fee if they have to go around," she said.

In her support, Naveen D’Souza said that it was illegal to construct a toll gate under MCC limits and asked the mayor to stop this project.

In reply, mayor Gulzar Banu said that a letter will be sent to the district commissioner in this regard.

The mayor said that a sum of Rs 8 crore on water bills was due and asked the officials to collect the amount soon.

Mariamma Thomas in reply said that there was a complaint by people that they did not receive water bills on time. "Some people have received bill of several months together. When this is the condition how can we put pressure on them, as it is our fault?

Various other discussions like maleria, bills, drainage problems at several places were also discussed.

Amitha Kala, deputy mayor, James D’Souza, Gretta Rebello, Shashidar Hegde, Ashraf among others were present.

For the last 9 months I have been using cloth bags everywhere but where do I put my garbage in garbage bags that are now banned so I will have to throw it in the MCC upturned well rings that serve as garbage bins only for the stray dogs, cats and even the destitute trying to get something to eat from my garbage- result the whole place is a mess.Pls answer MCC.
What do i do with the plastic containers/ boxes/ packings/ throwaway pens, etc that I have & keep getting in so many stores- MCC do you have places for them to be dumped all over the city- NO.
If you want to implement something have the infrastructure in place first.
(I have 11 CFL fused bulbs for the last 4 years kept because there is no place to dump these hazardous items).
And lastly, why are shopkeepers making money on the synthetic bags they now selling- for something costing in the wholesale market less than Rs 1 they charge Rs 2 or 3 a bag ( these are sold by weight by whole sellers)- a racket.

If I bring my own plastic bag, spar in city center, mangalore is ing my grocery purchase in my bag. if I do not bring, they charge Rs.5/- per bag. Same thing in Tajmahal Sweet stall in hampankata. They charged Rs.5/- per bag to me during my last visit to this stall. Here shop keepers can make more money. The rule does not apply. Your comments please .....

About 6 Crore tons of plastic is used in the packaging sector out of the total of about 17 Crore tons consumed in the World and India consumes 45 lakh tons. Offer reusable cotton bags and 40 per cent of the customers will bring their own bags. The encouragement of customers to bring and use their own reusable bags is not only cost-effective for them, but good for the environment. This helps overall and reinforces the message that reusable bags are indeed the long term option for the sake of us and our children and their children’s generation. Why don’t the horticulture departments promote jute, coir, palm Frond and banana fiber bags?
Despite the ban, many shops and eateries including a few hotels in the city continue to pack steaming hot food in plastic carry tumblers, which is hazardous to health. The malls circulate plastic bags to pick fruits and vegetables inside them instead they should use brown paper bags.
Please ban all kinds of foam and plastic made disposal plates, cups, bowls, spoons and containers from sales as well as use. Let them use tetra packs for milk, curds, etc.
Attn: MCC, please keep strict vigilance and conduct regular inspection/raid of all the manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors of plastic bags. The police and the judiciary should step in to discipline the rouge vendors.
    Jai Hind!

Unfortunately from local level till State/National level, our political rep. are nothing less than blaming each other for nothing. I would have appreciated in the MCC meeting, some corporator irrespective of party affiliation would have said, there is a change by the buyers/ vendors in the MCC in terms of plastic bag.
Just a week back, I had gone to buy in the main street market of downtown of Mangalore, and surprised to see, none of the vendors gave plastic bags whether is it bakery, or general stores including the famous City Centre Super market. No doubt they do charge for the bag, but it is ok as we have failed to carry our bag.

If we citizens are not cooperating with the laws, then how come our city can grow and adapt for changes, which is for our own good.

Wish our corporator's discuss sensible issues and how to implement it effectively rather politicizing every issue which is not at all a healthy sign of democracy.

    I agree with amharz, Mangalore

Well i can show you many rules like tht in mangalore... but the worst part in mangalore corporation is that there is no co-operation from them.

in simple language rules are meant to be broken by the one who makes the rule.

MCC should be more concerned about getting rid of Mosquitoes & eradicating Malaria. Everyone knows the bad condition of the roads, drainage and problems in clean water supply in Mangalore. Now MCC is wasting precious time on the silly issue of plastic bags.

    1. What about milk, will it be supplied in glass bottles like before?
    2. Also most of the liquid medicines [including liquor!] now come in sub standard plastic bottles. Is this very healthy?

Without educating the people and providing suitable alternatives, This ban only on plastic bags is silly and stupid.

Mangalore is the place for stupid rules. Here people are burden with high house taxes, High vehicle taxes, high petrol rate high vat, everything is high funniest part is paying double cost for the shopping bags(major outlets) which are suppose to given as free.
Now our Mangalore city corporation had come up with better ideas to make more wore life for Mangaloreans by Banning Plastic. Before taking any decision better find and alternative for plastic or else you are implementing a stupid rule without base. When you ban plastic then Ban all type of plastic, plastic bucket, plastic bottles, plastic packing (food stuff and milk packing) ,Plastic syringe, plastic interiors and exteriors of vehicle parts ,plastic pens.. let the people use metal and cloth material instead of plastic .Can any one imagine how the life will be when you ban all these product....? please don’t do for your political gain think about the problems of the people
