Mangalore, Dec 3: To educate people about the ban imposed on use of plastic, former Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada Dr N S Channappa Gowda and commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation Dr K Harish Kumar along with others visited the Central Fish Market, State Bank, here on Monday December 3.

DC and MCC commissioner distributed as many as 400 free cloth bags, an alternative to plastic bags. However, the fisherwomen who refused to accept the new rule of ban on plastic, expressed their anger by burning the cloth bags provided to them, right in front of the administrators.

Ashamed by the incident, the administrators fled from the scene.

It was a part of the program, wherein the officials of district administration and Mangalore City Corporation jointly visited shops and market places to convince people to stick to the alternative bags instead of plastic.

Speaking to Daijiworld, commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation Dr K Harish Kumar said that the reusable cloth bags were being distributed to the customers who were present in the fish market and not to the fisherwomen. Responding to the agitation he said that the suppliers who supply plastic to them will be convinced on the ban of plastic.

Fisherwomen kept shouting that cloth bags cannot be used to carry fish and use of plastic bags is necessary.

Yes, plastic bags have done, harm beyond repair to our country, butI cannot imagine especially carrying fish in a real cloth bag, that too if it will let icy water, blood to drip if one is driving a car, or carrying by public bus, auto or other transport modes causing so much of inconvenience all the way from the market to one's destination!!!??

One has to think in a practical way before implementing unpractical methods that will be an embarrassment to themselves and defeat the whole purpose of doing it in the first place.

Sallu Bangalore have you ever visited Fish Markets and docks were these women work hard alongside men folk to take care of their families they definetly do not love to work in the filth and stink but family responsibilities have forced them too just because they do not know certain unimportant things and speak in fancy literate language does not make them less educated then you are, Real education brings in humility where as literacy makes you proud, arrogant and conceited I think you belong to the later group being literate only gets you knowledge not wisdom but when you are Educated you have compassion to another living being!!

So being literate and educated are not the same thing like you Sallu you look like a Literate Monster not fit for being in society where you have no compassion towards honest hard working human beings, you should probably be in one of the giant corporations where they look people as dispensable and think only people who graduate with A MBA or equivalent and attend a prestigious university and are class toppers have all the right in the world to call themselves Educated.

But please look around! Persons in your own country and in International and in History all the persons who are really successful were Educated were not Highly Literate like you are!! Please try to educate yourself!! I am sure you do not posses the common sense of these Fisher Women!!

Funny, Fisherwomen got upset for distributing cloth bags to people by some officials.
Why it should matter to them how people carry their fish. Their interest is in only selling the fish.
This may be because of the plastic bags manufacturers and dealers who have a big stock of those plastic bags.
Anyway manufacturers\stockists had ample time to get rid of the plastic bags.
The reason for banning plastic bags has been explained very well by the government. Now Govt. should employ some people to convey this message verbally to those people who are illiterate.

One of most silly and Hypocritical ban ever!! it is sad to see out “highly” literate district becoming highly uneducated, why cannot government themselves restrict the use of plastic in many things they themselves supply like Nadini milk, Arrack Pouches, Rice bags, fertilizer bags and list is endless , and then ask the Major business houses and families to use alternative packaging methods to market the Product or stop the plastic bag manufacturing industries or ban the polymer import and manufacturing all over the world, for this no environmental authorities neither have guts! why should always only the poor should always suffer and again end benefits usually go to the traders who are presently selling a bag made as similar materials as Geotex at a Premium (Geotex® woven geotextiles have superior capacity for filtration and load distribution, reducing rutting and extending the life of paved and unpaved roadways. Made from individually woven, ultraviolet (UV)-resistant polypropylene yarns, and manufactured with high tensile strength and low elongations, Geotex woven geotextiles provide dimensional stability and resistance to the biological and chemical environments normally found in soils.) is this any better than plastic I don't know, People please clearly understand every intention, motivation and corrupt minds behind such Bans, do not be a hypocrite as Plastic has too many advantages in every field especially Medical Industries etc also it helps us from depleting our natural resources such as various Ores!! Please stop this Herd mentality and let us see how we can live with Plastic and use it responsibly should everything has to be forced upon us (Indians especially) we are in a democratic country not under the rule of a Dictator and in India almost everything is reused and recycled, we have to just pay a little bit more to collect the used plastic and then you see you will be able not see bit of unused plastic anywhere, probably people may break into your house to steal your safely stored plastic bags!

Namaskara! By 'educated' I don't mean that fisherwomen should attain college education. What I meant was before distributing free cotton bags, the municipal authorities should inform and explain them about the long term dangers posed by the use of plastic bags. This time I appreciate the efforts of the administation. Our minds take long to get accustomed to what has been in practice for long. Banning plastic is one step towards saving our environment and people should support this cause than revolting. Let people carry their own bags while going shopping. I am very sure that at least those who think of the environment will do it.
In cases like these where reqeust does not work, force is the only way.

I remeber during my primary school days in my native place. We used to pass through the local fish market in the evening just to have a glimpse of the fish. There are no plastic bags then neither people used to carry any cloth bags etc. elederly males used to quietly take out their loin cloth and spread in front the fisherwomen! That serves the dual purpose! The fish also tastes good! No complaints from any quarters!!!

Introduce PLASTIC lined cloth or jute or synthetic bags which won't drip & are reusable, then only this can be feasible.
Or else provide them with leaves or arecanut "pale" just like in the olden days, which is not leakproof either.

I wonder how much it will cost to clean the cloth bag if used to carry fish & meat and also dirty the vehicle which someone would travel with. Any common sense? At least these administrators started with grocery shops instead making fools of themselves!!!! Nice joke.

There cannot be a blanket ban on use of plastic bags. If plastic bags should not be used to carry fish, then plastic packets should not be used to market Nandini milk or any other pre-packed product. After all more people consume milk than fish.

My memory goes 20 years back when we were kids. There were no plastic bags that time. The shop keeper was packing the items in paper bags folded in front of us. Usually they were old newspapers. There were brown colour paper bags also for packing. People were going to fish market and vegetable market with plastic woven bags which were reusable .Even they were washed at home and kept separatley.Even bread came in clean printed paper. Bakeries like Komal's used to pack their products in paper covers.Milk was supplied by KMF in glass bottles which were collected by the supplier for recirculation. The plastic bags really spoiled the market and re usability. We can see plastic bags thrown everywhere on road, in drain, in park. Even plastic bottles are thrown. It is the right decision of the government to ban plastic.People should use either cloth, jute or plastic woven bags which are reusable and environment friendly. It is worth than throwing the thin plastic bags or burning it and saving our environment

FOR FISH AND MEAT ITEMS, WE MUST TAKE BIG STEEL TIFFIN BOXES SO THAT WE CAN CARRY ALL FISH/MEAT IN IT AND IT IS CLEAN AND HYGENIC AND WE CAN REUSE THOSE BOXES AGAIN AND AGAIN. THESE BOXES CAN BE CARRIED IN CLOTH BAGS.

NO NEED FOR PLASTIC AT ALL.

WE FRIENDS HAVE ALREADY STARTED CARRYING OUR BOXES FOR MEAT/FISH AND IT IS VERY EASY TOO AS WHEN WE COME HOME, WE CAN JUST DUMP THE BOX IN FRIDGE.

IT IS ONLY A HABIT AND ONCE WE START IT, IT WILL BE GOOD. WE WILL REALISE IT THAT IT SAVES US AND ENVIRONMENT.

BEFORE ALL WERE USING CLOTH BAGS AND OUR OLDER GENERATION HAD LESS SICKNESS AND GOOD HEALTH. NOW PLASTICS ARE CAUSING MUCH DAMAGE TO HUMANS AND ANIMALS TOO.

There are certain plastic products which cannot be banned from using. Such Straws, Bags to carry meat, Fresh wraps, Plastic food containers and there are many more. So Officials make some sensible decision rather than getting insulted in public.
