Cauvery Dispute: SC Orders Karnataka to Release 10,000 Cusecs

New Delhi, Dec 5 (PTI): In an interim relief to Tamil Nadu, the Supreme Court directed Karnataka today to release 10,000 cusecs of Cauvery water per day its neighbouring state and asked the Cauvery Monitoring Committee (CMC) to hold its meeting to decide the amount of water required by the states.

A bench of justices D K Jain and Madan B Lokur said its interim order will continue till CMC files its report. It asked the committee to meet tomorrow or day after and posted the case for further hearing on Monday.

Cusec is a measure of flow rate of water and is abbreviation for cubic feet per second (which is equivalent to a flow of 28.317 litres per second) and 11,000 cusecs flow for a day amounts to 1 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) water.

"CMC is requested to hold the meeting on December 6 or 7 to find out water requirement for crops in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka for the month of December and the report would be submitted to the concerned authority.

"In the meantime, we direct that till the CMC submits its report, Karnataka shall release 10,000 cusecs water per day from today. We make it clear that the order will continue till CMC submits its report," the bench said.

The bench said that its immediate concern is to save the crops which are allegedly dying because of lack of water and it would decide other issues later on.
"Both states are distressed and we have to see that we can save crops of both the states. We would keep our eyes open to the requirement of both the states and find out practical solution of the problem," the bench observed.

The apex court also asked the Union government to explain as to why the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal has not been notified by the government.

The court gave its order on an interim application of Tamil Nadu for release of additional water from Cauvery on alleged ground that its winter crop is dying due to lack of water.

During the earlier hearing on November 26, the court had asked the chief ministers of the two states to meet and arrive at an amicable solution to the "sensitive" Cauvery water dispute.

The talks between the chief ministers of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, however, had failed to break the deadlock on water sharing row and the matter had again reached the apex court.

IT IS TRUE WATER IS THE ASSET OF THE COUNTRY BUT AT WHAT COST ?
DRINKING WATER FOR KARNATAKA IS MORE CONCERNED WHEN COMPARED TO CROPS OF TAMILNADU. TAMILNADU MAY GET RAIN BUT IT COULD NOT FLOW TO KARNATAKA AND WE ARE SURE WE ARE NOT GOING TO GET ANY RAIN FURTHER.

Tamilnadu farmers are pampered with these largesse by SC.
Human nature always is to waste water when its plenty. They irrigate more than required for a crop, they already have recieved rains while Karnataka didn't.
Solution is to adopt new varieties & types of crop which consume less water but higher yields.
The tendency of our governments is to escalate these till the last minute rather than solve the problems forseeing such a scenario in advance.
Politicians always have ulterior motives in fanning fires to divert their failures in governance.
Supreme Court always uses its power indiscretely rather than doing justice in consideration of drought situations.
Can our politicians ready to disobey the order & go to jail for contempt of court which will benefit them in next election?
If I were CM of Karnataka I will take this decision setting precedence for future Non-cooperation Movements like M Gandhi did, which will uphold the Right of Federalism in National Politics.

When we don't have enough water, how can we share it with others ?
Our State will be ruined if we give water as Supreme Court has ordered.
Our farmers crops will be damaged.
Every one will go in need of food and water
    So,
WE MUST PROTEST, LET ALL THE OFFICES BE CLOSED, ALL THE SCHOOLS & COLLEGES BE SHUT.
LET US ALL FIGHT FOR OURSELVES.
LET MYSORE BE BANDH FOR 2 DAYS.
LET US ALL STRIKE FOR WATER.
Please think about the future and come to a decision

Water of Cauvery is of the country and therefore belongs neither to Karnataka nor T.N. It is a common resource which has to be shared equitably. Crop failure in T.N. or Karnataka affects the nation... Let us learn to share and keep politics out...

The Honourable Supreme Court should better transfer the chief ministers. Shettar to Tamilnadu and Jayalalitha to Karnataka. Then they will realize the value of water. It is said that the next world war will be for water and not for oil. I feel that an independent technical committee having calculated the availability of water, necessity of water should suggest the correct distribution mechanism. Every year this fight is taking place. I cannot understand the rationale behind these developments. When Karnataka is short of water how can it release water. Tamilnadu has recently received plenty of water and I cannot understand why it requires more water. Simple mathematical formulas could solve this water problem. Total water available-requirement of Karnataka=water to be released to Tamilnadu. 150-125=25. Is it not simple. Now an independent technical committee should calcuate these values and decide the balance. Let wisdom prevail upon our bureaucrats.

Present state Govt of Karnataka effectively not put forward Karnataka's interest in the Cavery water sharing issue. We have lacking potable water here for Bangalore City then how can we release water for TN that also for agriculture?TN/Kerala's politicians are rallying towards state interest when question of State's interest crops up.Jaya, ally of BJP and our state govt of also BJP not want to harm/distrub Jaya's mood considering future alliance with her.In given scenario regional parties like AIDMK/DMK can safeguard state interest effectively rather than national political parties. For instance Shiva Sene goons are given permission to stage MAHAMELA while Assembly session on progress in BELAGAVI this week!!It is mainly because SS is the ally of BJP!!!In the Cavery issue our main Advocate missing yesterday in SC!!!!???In Cavery issue Karnataka always in receiving end... ?
