Udupi, Dec 13: Udupi Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) on Tuesday December 11 reportedly made another futile attempt to dump fly ash on National Highway 66 at Hejamady.

It is learnt that earlier too the company had dumped loads of fly ash near Thenka Yermal in order to raise the height of the national nighway. But some locals, environmentalists, political leaders protested against this and even put pressure on the DC. Finally, the dump ash was cleared as per the DC's order.

UPCL Company which is functioning at Yellur gram panchayat limits had awarded the contract to Andhra company to transport fly ash to Kochi. But on Tuesday around 4.30 pm, the fly ash was dumped near Shivanagar mini bridge on NH 66 through tankers. Noticing this, the locals questioned them and they were told that it was cement which was meant for highway work. But the locals confirmed that it was ash and not cement.

In this regard, Kiran who was looking after the UPCL works admitted his mistake and apologized.

Later Padubidri inspector Mahadev Setti asked them to clear the flying ash. The police also imposed fine on them which was paid at the station.

PDO Prathiba Kudthadka, Sachin Nayak, taluk panchayat member, gram panchayat member Krishna, Keshav among others were present.

I believe it is possible to utilize fly ash as a cheap source for making bricks for the bulding industry. Wonder why our Mangalore builders have not taken the initiative for this cheap and readily available raw material.

Ash generation in UPCL has now tripled because poorer quality coal burnt to generate the power & also due to substandard chinese designed equipments. They have been playing havoc with the lives & livelihoods of the people of the area, now the surrounding well water especially in Santhur, Yellur village is totally contaminated & no longer suitable for drinking or irrigation. The Govt. has failed to take any action & turns a deaf ear to all written complaints.

Fly ash is a dangerous Item it contains Poisonous Mercury which can remain even in Ground water for Long periods of time and can cause damage to Liver and other Vital organs. The Only Win-Win Solution is to put up Cement sprinklers factory nearby and reroute that towards it Or else it needs to be disposed off after necessary scientific treatment to make it non poisonous

Person like Mr. Jairam Ramesh, Ex-Minister of Environmental Ministry had too much problem with New-Mumbai-Panvel International Airport due to destruction of mangroves. But dumping hazardous material exposed to human beings is not at all problem to any Ministry. Thanks Mr. Moily, we, as well as our next generations will remember your contribution towards Coastal Region by approving this Project which was banned and rejected elsewhere in the World. This is what we call development by Congress Government in last 50 years everywhere in India
