Mangalore, Jan 6: The annual Eucharist procession of Mangalore diocese was held from Milagres Church to Rosario Cathedral here on Sunday January 6.

Prior to the procession, Mass was offered by Bishop of Mangalore Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza at Milagres Church. The procession led by the Bishop culminated at Rosario Cathedral where adoration was held.

In his homily, Fr Pius James D'Souza, superior, St Joseph's Monastery said that the people of Mangalore diocese organized the Eucharist procession to thank God for all His blessings. "All are togther here. Jesus is everything and we need his help in everything we do. Eucharist is celebrated in Mangalore but in some places it is not. Without Eucharist there is no meaning to Christians. It is a symbol of unity, whether in family, workplace or among neighbours," he said.

"A person who unites people has faith in god. We need to help the old and the sick, for, by serving them we can serve god," he added.

Nearly 10,000 people including priests, nuns and the laity took part in the procession.

The entire programme was managed by vicar general of Mangalore diocese Fr Denis Moras Prabhu, Milagres parish priest Fr Valerian D'Souza and Rosario parish priest Fr Stany Goveas.

Fr Francis D'Souza announced the names of parishes which made the highest collections for  Mangalore diocese. They were honoured with mementoes.

The programme was compered by Fr Boniface Pinto and Fr Vijay Machado.

Fr Henry Sequeira, diocese chancellor, Fr Patrick Rodrigues, Fr Richard Coelho, Fr William Menezes, Fr Antony Serrao, Fr Andrew D'Souza, Fr Victor D'Mello, Fr Santosh Kamath and others were present.

The Eucharistic procession and the public veneration of our Lord and Master Jesus Christ may trigger a more unified approach between the Christians in general and Catholics in particular. Let it serve as an example for other people who like to kindle communalism. I am sure there were many non christian believers who stood by and supported the Christian community during this mega procession, to safeguard from any communal incidents. Thank you too my brothers and sisters for helping us to venerate our Lord mightily and peacefully. May Almighty God Bless you all.

Beautiful photographs covering a great occasion the Solemn Annual Eucharistic Procession of the Diocese of Mangalore.

However one thing that stuck me the most was the Band of the well-uniformed children gracing the entire procession route., that would have made an enormous and glorious difference to the Procession. I am sure the children too enjoyed the privilege to grace such a great occasion….

In the olden days we used to have the legendary Jeppoo band which used to accompany the procession and at the end lead the Solemn Tantum Ergo Hymn and the entire congregation present used to sing the hymn in one unison.

Having played in the St.Aloysius College band for many years, however I felt that young children who are playing the blowing instruments like Trumphets, Clarinets etc., would have undergone enormous strain both to practice the hymns and then to play during the entire procession route. The strain involved is enormous on the chest, heart, lungs and the entire respiratory system of every child and I really do not understand as to why senior organisors of the procession did not prefer to avoid the children to undergo this enormous strain on their healths to recover from which it take many many a years.
