Fast Called off After Ashok Assures of Withdrawing Cases Against Soorinje

Bangalore, Jan 7 (The Hindu): Journalists who launched a fast here on Saturday seeking the release of Kasturi Newz24 journalist Naveen Soorinje called it off on Sunday evening after Deputy Chief Minister R. Ashok assured them of withdrawing the cases against him.

Addressing the protesters at the Freedom Park here, Ashok, who also holds the Home portfolio, said that he had directed the police to withdraw the cases against Soorinje.

He added that the matter would soon be taken up by the Cabinet.

He, however, said that cases involving the other accused persons would remain untouched. “Only those cases against Soorinje will be withdrawn,” he added.

Meanwhile, Litterateurs Baraguru Ramachandrappa and S.G. Siddaramaiah lent support to the agitation on Sunday. Ramachandrappa said that it was shameful that journalists had to stage a protest to secure the release of a colleague who was only doing his job of reporting an incident. He also condemned the police for booking cases against him.

A host of organisations, PUCL, SFI, KSRTC and BMTC Employees Union, Praja Pragathi Vedike, Alternative Law Forum, Dalit Sangharsh Samiti and Komu Souharda Vedike, too extended support to the cause with their members turning up the protest venue.

Cases against other accused will not be withdrawn, said the Home Minister.

With elections round the corner Ashok wants to keep corrupt media in good books. So if he can withdraw cases at his own will bowing down to pressure tactics why do we need a court. Tomorrow there might be many more pressure groups who might resort to similar tactics
So are we to conclude that law is meant only for hapless common people

BJP walas have mastered the art of breaking and bending law to suit their needs. Thanks to BJP... they have made this land like Bihar under Lalu's regime.

With a government like this, Karnataka will soon be a "GONE CASE'!!!

As per law of the land, enormous precautions should be taken to protect the innocent under no circumstances innocent should be falsely implicated or punished.

Therefore in the process of trial, the offender is let off or not convicted for lack of evidence.
It is fair and necessary as per law to ensure innocents are not held guilty.

Our law is very, very sensitive about wrongly holding someone guilty, so sacred and noble law, should always be in safe administration.
Our law is for very civilized people.

What's new in this - why BJP followers are surprised -
BJP Govt. in Karnataka has been pardoning all culprits at will, especially their own ministers.
They do not have any respect\regard for courts and its rulings.
Did the Govt. adhere to it (this is just one of many)

They need those goodas imprisioned, before the election starts. Hence all this preparation, to withdraw case against soorinje.
Hope someone will take Ashoka to task on this.

Mr Peter Pereira,Dinesh Poojari and all concerned...I would like to remind you guys couple of years back as per cabinet decision criminal cases of Reddy brothers,ABVP and Sanghparivar's were withdrawn!!!Interestingly, for Reddy's case they are the party for the cabinet decision!!!!Now HC or SC take the cognizance of cases on merit and materials provided by prosecution.I think particularly Navin Soorinje's case,Mangalore working Journalist Association had representation wit Police Commissioner who promised to withdraw the case against cribs but last minute due to political pressure it was charged. Now, Govt decision with regarding arrest came under severe criticism from with in and outside the state which is not good for a NATIONAL POLITICAL PARTY.Almost all NGOs/TRADE UNIONS/
Intellectuals and citizens of Karnataka pressured govt to do so and therefore after cabinet decision the case would be withdrawn. This case is purely on revenge by police first and then ruling political party finally showing symptoms of happy ending. This decision in fact wise one and in the parliament set of
Assembly or parliament is supreme. If parliament wishes, under impeachment provisions Judges can be sacked.

According to me, arrest of a media person for exposing the guilty is wrong. Now, going agaist court decision also is equally wrong.

Where is the value of court and Judiciary Systems under BJP rule ? Utter non-sense. A state without govt., politicians without sense, people like sheep without shepherd. We have certainly left Bihar and U.P. behind us under present senseless rule in Karnataka.

Almost all people here are against the Govt's decision of releasing of Naveen.

This is a STUPID act by Ashok. Tomorrow a journalist may shoot and telecast LIVE RAPE INCIDENT in TV forgetting his responsibility to inform police.

It must be noted that home stay attack took place on July 29th and by 10th August nearly 40 people were arrested. Navember 1st week, that is 3 months after, Soorinje was arrested. That means already arrested people would have informed Police about the involvement of Soorinje during the police interrogation.

Usually police and media arrives on the spot after the incident has taken place. But in this case People have watched WHAT HAS TAKEN PLACE live in TV. He was knowing about the attack before hand but he did not perform his SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY of stopping such incident. By airing live video of MANHANDLING THE GIRLS, he and his team tarnished the image of the girls. There is a strong chances that even NAVIN would have misguided HJV activists by giving wrong information that rave party was being taken place in the venue.

HC and SC should decide on Navin's fate. If he is culprit he should be punished heavily. Govt should not interfere.

Ashoka is playing to the gallery here by withdrawing the case.

Can a Home Minister even has right to dictate withdrawal of cases? Especially when even High Court has repeatedly noted that Naveen Soorinje was hand in glove with attackers and may have even planned the whole homestay attack?

I pity the policemen who have to work under bafoons like Home Minister Ashok who does not even seem to be aware of a thing called "due course".

I have a feeling even if police withdraw the case high court may not allow it.

So, Dear Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Mr. R. Ashok, finally you bow your head for pressure tactics followed by journalists? Withdrawing case against Naveen Soorinje will make case against other also become weak and even Judge may ask question to Police Department that why don’t you withdraw cases against “Dal or Sene” activists too. Is their any provision in Indian Law to withdraw cases against any person like this and pursue the case against others on same matter?
