Mangalore: Poets to Converge at Bantwal for Kavita Fest on Jan 13

Mangalore, Jan 8: Kavita Trust, which is engaged in the task of promoting Konkani poetry will be organizing ‘Kavita Fest-2013’, the 7th edition of the festival of poetry in the courtyard of Vishwa Konkani Sardar Basti Vaman Shenoy at Thumbay, Bantwal on Sunday January 13.

Addressing a press meet here on Tuesday January 8, Melvyn Rodrigues, president of Kavita Trust, said that the day-long programme will focus around poetry and is being organized by Kavita Trust in association with Konkani Language and Cultural Foundation and Department of Kannada & Culture, Government of Karnataka.

The programme will begin at 9:30 am with a colourful procession from BA Hospital Thumbay, with delegates from Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Kerala participating.

Renowned Konkani activist and poet Uday L Bhembre will inaugurate the day-long programme, he said. "Bhembre will also present a paper on ‘Poet and his Social Responsibility’ while Maxim Lobo, Bangalore and Nutan Sakhardande, Goa will respond to the presentation," he said.

The final rounds of ‘Rohan and Lavita Monteiro - All India Konkani Poetry Reciting Competition’ will also be held with 28 finalists presenting their works.

Post-lunch, a multilingual poetry session will be held, presided over by Uday Mhambro, Goa. Indu Gersappe, Stany Bela, Wilma Bantwal, Francis Fernandes Cascia, Geo Agrar, Ashok Bhonslo, Dr L Suneetha Bai (all Konkani), Ashraf Apollo (Beary) V S Bhat (Kannada), Amrita Athrady (Tulu) and Kiran Parmar (Hindi) will recite their poetry.

The closing ceremony in the evening will have Fr Prashanth Madtha, Kannada-Konkani writer and lexicographer as chief guest. The prizes of ‘The Late Charles and Theresa Rodrigues – Memorial All India Konkani Poetry Writing Competition’ will be presented on the occasion.

Rajay Pawar, poet from Goa will be honored with Mathias Family Poetry Award.

Melvyn said that Kavita Trust for the past 11 years has been organizing various activities to promote Konkani poetry in places like Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra and even in Dubai. In addition, more than 150 poets from other parts of the country will be present for the Kavita Fest.

Basti Vaman Shenoy, president of Konkani Language and Cultural Foundation also expressed his happiness on being part of the fest.

Kavita Trust trustees William Pais and Andrew L D’Cunha were present.
