Udupi, Jan 8:
Bus drivers are often criticized for their reckless and rash driving which have resulted in a number of accidents, but here is an alert driver whose presence of mind perhaps saved many lives.

The bus he was driving had a sudden break failure near Pangala bridge on national highway 66, but fortunately, thanks to his quick action, the damage was minimum and the passengers escaped with minor injuries.

The incident occurred in the afternoon of Monday January 7.

The private bus was moving from Kaup to Udupi with a good number of passengers. As the bus reached Pangala bridge, its break failed. The alert driver, whose identity is not known, in a bid to save the lives of the passengers, put his own life at risk and dashed the bus into the rear side of a lorry moving ahead.

Immediately, the lorry driver moved his vehicle to the side of the national highway and the bus too moved on.

It is said that if the driver had lost control over the bus and hit the bridge, the bus would have fallen into the gorge and the minor mishap would have turned into a major tragedy.

A few passengers sustained minor injuries and were admitted in a private hospital in Udupi.

Kaup police inspector Rajendra Nayak rushed to the spot. A case has been registered and investigation is on.

    The Picture says it all..
The driver has put his life at risk !! All other theories of fishiness, foul play, investigations are secondary . .
Today's era people are qualifying more, and at the same time 'common sense' & 'presence of mind' is diminishing.
Hats off to this blue-collared Gentle-man for showing character!!

there is something fishy in this story any person related to automobiles will disagree with the brake fail theory, which has been used for decades to convince public, once the air brakes fails it stops at the spot may be in the middle of the road and only a trained technician can make the bus move or make it to tow.only a person in insurance co. will know how stories are made up.

Really something surprised to me why most of them disagreed with
alternative break option incase the matter is emergency,
is there any ban for alternative break option.

there are no emergency brakes on indian trucks and buses... if you are referring to the air braking system.... well that doesnt work when the vehicle is in motion.... so if your silly banter was to show off that you've lived in the US... well thats pretty sad...

Driver should be rewarded. No case should be registered against him. He has done good job by risking his own life and saving lives of passengers. Well done. His name should be published too.

Indeed the driver of the vehicle has done a good job by his presence of mind. As can be seen from the picture the driver took a risk as he could have been jammed by the rear of lorry.

I have been driving vehicles in India and in U.S.A. and there is something like emergency brakes which can be life savers. Was the bus installed with these kind of brakes and if so it would have been easier for the driver to apply the emergency brakes and bring the vehicle under control. The question arises as to why this was not done.

Check up is far away matter in same number two bus running in Mangalore even though no money there for to pay the tax, all tyre resolved , forget safety some window can not open.

When Daily collection mater comes Where it Will go definitely inside the the pocket of those who authorized to run the two bus under same work permit with same registration number.

Government means politics they need money forget regulated vehicle check-up / maintenance

We public allow the chance to this leader just we will think the right direction but nothing will happen.

    For whom we can blame

    1) Bus Owner
    2) Political Leader
    3) R.T.O
    4) Public

    Base itself lost and corrupted

POOR SYSTEM, POOR SYSTEM, POOR SYSTEM

Incase again hike in petrol and diesel means will lead the owner to run 3rd or 4th or 5th Bus under Same Registration Number and will have an effect on the sincere bus owner as well

Government regulated vehicle check-up / maintenance should be made compulsory every 12 months for all public transport and trucks. if then there is a failure the agency that conducted the checks should be held liable.

Thanks a lot to the driver for his idea but brakes are not working because due to rash driving or no proper maintenace at all. No competition please if there are so many passengers in the bus. Always keep some wooden blocs to block and stop the tyres moving.

R.T.O should inspect all the vehicles yearly at least and as we see in some of vehicles there is no lights of caution even some do frequent stop with out indications in Udupi-Managalore buses or any vehicles more importance are given on music system than the lights. So please let R.T.O take action on such things which will also be safe to all in the way...appreciate this driver at least he controlled his vehicle from major accident..

There must be "Hand Break ".
Instead of doing this[ which one showed in the picture ], he may use that.
Wiyh the help of gear also he can stop or he can reduce the speed of bus.

    is it ?
