Mangalore, Jan 8: A fire broke out in the ICU of Father Muller Hospital here on Tuesday January 8.

The fire broke out due to a short circuit in the air-conditioner, sources in the fire department said.

Two fire tenders from Pandeshwar and one from Kadri were rushed to the spot and the fire was soon brought under control.

No injury has been reported in the incident.

This is second incident of fire reported in a hospital in the city in the last few days. Last week, fire broke out in the first floor of KMC hospital in Balmatta.

More details awaited.

Before the Fire Brigades reached our Hospital the maintenance incharge had gone to the ICCU and cleared the problem. I feel the credit you people giving to the Fire Brigade is of no use. The Staff from Father Mullers have cleared all the problems before the fire brigades reached. So the credit fully goes to the staff from the maintenance department.

I have known Father Muller's Medical College Hospital for the past eighty-two years. In the first instance as a child patient and thereafter as a well wisher and a patient too. That apart I have served as a Governing Board Member of The Hospital for several years and I am aware of the care and precautions that the Hospital takes to ensure safety all round an particularly of The Patients. Electrical short circuits can take place any where and here too it can be deemed as an accident. However thanks to the timely presence of The Fire department there was no serious damage to the building and the patients and the doctors and staff.

The Medical College Hospital as such is professionally managed by The Director - Father Patrick Rodrigues, Medical College administrator Father Denis D'Sa, the Hospital administrator Father Richard Coelho and Asst. Director Father Rudolph D'Sa. These together with Father Prakash D'Sousa and Father Vincent Saldanha of The Homeopathy department ably helped by Father Peter Noronha form the core management of The 133 old Father Muller's complexes. One can therefore be sure that The Lord is the protector of all the institutions coming under the management.

The accident may be aken as a timely warning for for the management to ensure full safety of all the departments.

SAFETY IS THE "WORD" Ofcourse we should be aware that anything can happen at the wrong time .the maintenance can be blamed from one angle but we also have to go indepth to find out why the so called INCIDENT happened, maybe there are more serious reasons which need to be seen by the management ,has there been preventive maintenance done at regular intervals and the maintenance department recording details done daily weekly monthly yearly etc.the ISO PROCEDURES HAS TO BE FOLLOWED STRICTLY. Well for now atleast let the people around wake up and do the neede at the earliest so that like this type of incidents do not reoccur and the standard of FMCI remains intact like before

    LOOK AT THE PHOTOS CAREFULLY:

IT CLEARLY SAYS IT IS INDIA, WE NEED TO LEARN SAFETY MANNERS.

    1. RATHER THAN KEEPING THE GATE CLEAR FOR EMERGENCY AID ACCESSES PEOPLE STILL STANDING AROUND. I AM NOT SURE IF THAT GATE CAN BE OPENED.

    2. ALL NON FIRE SAFETY PERSONNEL BLOCKING THE ICU AREA DOOR

    3. MOST INTELLIGENT PEOPLE NON OTHER THAN MEDIA PERSONNEL BLOCKING THE PASSAGE OR DOORS

    4. PEOPLE RATHER THAN MOVING TO THE SAFE PLACE CALLED "FIRE STATION" STANDING ON STEPS TO WATCH FIRST GLIMPSE OF WHAT IS HAPPENING NEXT.

    4. BIG MISTAKE BY MANAGEMENT, ADDRESSING MEDIA AT THE PASSAGE OR DOOR,(WHAT HAPPENS IF FIRE REIGNITES). ALL SHOULD HAVE BEEN CALLED IN A OPEN AREA WITH A TABLE AND GIVEN STATEMENT CALMLY.

COME ON MANGALOREANS, LET US LEARN HOW TO ACT IF THERE IS A FIRE INCIDENT.

I join with all to thank the almighty for changing what could be an disaster into minor incident.

Requesting authorities of all hospitals to take folowing safety measures as minimum.
1.Airconditioners always draw very high current. As a rule of thumb one Ton capacity unit will take upto 8 Ampere.Appropriate capacity power plugs wired with circuit breakers of reputed brand to be installed.
2.Now a days ducted type units are available for small capacities.Advantages are they can be interlocked with Fire/Heat detectors with alarm facity.which is best recommended for critical area like ICU.
3.Fire alarm system to be functional.Simulation and testing to be done on weekly basis.
4.Mock Fire drill and evacuation to be carried out periodically
5.Fire extnguishers to be available in key locations.
6.Emergency exit doors and emergency route sign boards to be installed in all locations.
7.It is evident that during fire accidents in buildings fatalities caused due to saffocation rather than burning.People fell unconcious due to presence of carbon monoxide and other toxic gases.Every personal shall attend training to identify ventilated area or how to ventilate the area temporarily.
8.Last but not least hospitals shall employ competant technical staff who can perform maintenance keeping safety as priority always.
9.Upgrade firefighting gears like pressurized water hoses, sprinklers, dry chemical fire extinguishers etc.

Praise the Lord and take care of our patients always. Thanks a lot for the fire fighters for their prompt action and those who noticed and informed. The corrective measures should be taken to block such incedents in future. At night, all cannot watch and the patient may go up. Thanks to all.

I just wonder how soon its assumed that short circuit is the cause!Few days back it was KMC now Father Muller's! Both the places its told short circuit in AC. Check if these AC's are of the same make & model. These window/box AC's are antique & power guzzlers. These make a good home for pegions and birds. These must be scrapped.
