Mangalore: St Aloysius College Set for Gala Reunion

Media Release

Mangalore, Jan 10: St Aloysius College Alumni/ae Association (SACAA) will hold its annual reunion on Saturday January 12 at the college campus from 7 pm onwards.

The eagerly looked-forward-to annual event, this year offers a wider mix of games, housie and entertainment items, conducted by well-known comperes Sumit Rao, Janice Govias and Arthur D'Souza, who is also convenor of the reunion.

Dayananda Pai, an ex-Aloysian and noted educationalist and builder will be the chief guest.

The MCs at the reunion would be looking for the oldest ex-Aloysian attending it.

During the reunion, there will be a formal function presided over by the rector Fr Joseph Rodrigues, of the institution. The SACAA director Fr Swebert D’Silva will give the message. It will be followed by the entertainment programme and dinner. All alumni are hereby requested to be present.

No Annual Report

Responding to comments about lengthy formal segments of reunion celebration, the organizers have deleted the conventional annual report and have creatively pruned the time duration for the formal function. This provides an opportunity for ex-Aloysians to spend more time for interaction around upholstered round tables and chairs on the foreground of the heritage old college building. Or, they could opt for counters for spirititual potions of their choice and snack bars offering veg and non-veg starters.

There will be a sumptuous buffer spread for dinner, with veg and non-veg temptations, topped by desserts. All these for a cover charge of Rs 250 – a steal considering the chance to bag many prizes and hampers offered by generous donors. Apart from the fast-paced housie, there are also chances to win prizes in the lucky dip for bucketed ticket counterfoils.

Pot-luck

Pot-luck takes a different meaning at the reunion venue where participants are invited to a specially set up counter with a mud pot from which numbered chits are to be drawn, with numbers starting from 600 and ending with 5999. In aid of the swimming pool project, described below, the pot luck draw was symbolically inaugurated during the last Reunion.. But it went beyond symbolism as dozens queued up for the draw. The organizers had to disappoint the prospective draw-enthusiast as there was no time slot for this event. This time, the pot-luck progamme would be a parallel activity, and would go on at a discreetly located counter. Pot-luck drawers would not have to make spot settlement and would settle accounts later. It is a win-win situation: if one draws a lower denomination, he will settle for less; and if one draws higher denomination, the swimming Pool Project kitty will swell faster.

Swimming Pool Project

The projected swimming pool at St Aloysius campus will put the college, and Mangalore, on the competitive swimming map of India. Designed to international standards, this ozonised pool will have 8 lanes of 50 metres each there would also be a mini pool for children. A vote of confidence for this project has come from the University Grants Commission which has sanctioned Rs one crore for it. Work has already started on the project, estimated to cost Rs 4 crore, more or less, mainly due to the formidable retention wall to ensure complete safety to downstream people structures and properties. But, once constructed at one-time cost basis, it would benefit generations of students to vie for plum pan-India sports prizes and kids to learn swimming.

Please confirm your participation by calling the SACAA office 0824-2449710 between 2 to 5 pm. Dinner tickets (Rs 250 per person) can be collected from the registration counter on the same day.

Denis pinto is partly right.but report clearly says that responding to coment about lenthy formal segmentof reunion.this year it has pruned the formal part.including by deleting the conventional annual report .to make time for fun and gamesjust like in dubai,at the college campus there has been .and would be band music ,hampers prizes ect .and has been noted in the press release published starting at 7pm and stretching up to 10.30pm (officially-but closes around 11pm)gives 3.30 hours .How ever there is a cat and mouse game which results in late starting awaiting a decent audience
the solution is for people to come punctually.
As for the vanue no hotel or hall can evoke the same nostalgia as the ground in the shadow of the heritage building .as for disturbing the resident priests the function is held there with their concurrence and all of them are invities and do attend apparently there have been no complaints on this account over afunction held once a year .

The event should be moved to some other venue. Like the St. Agnes & St. Aloysius meet in Dubai, we should have a good goan band / music / hampers / prizes etc. If it is held on the St. Aloysus ground , its a disturbance for the priests living there. Hence everything closes by 10.30pm. How boring !

Old students should bring their spouces to the venue to interact with other people.

There should be an entertainment committee consisting of youngsters and not oldies who would like to hit the sack at 10.45pm.

Indeed The Reunion is wonderful event uniting the young and the old. I have had the pleasure of being a student of S. Aloysius from middle school onwards and indeed I have wonderful memories of my teachers and professors including the Jesuit Father who played such an important role in making me what I am and it has always been a pleasure for me to retrace my steps to my Alma Mater. I had the pleasure and honor of raising The Centenary Toast in 1980 and at the venue only one of my teachers Mr. Pandurang Pai was present and he was delighted to meet me.

I join several others in congratulating the organizers who are striving to take our Alma Mater to greater heights.
