Mangalore, Jan 11: The massive fire that raged in Primacy Industries candle factory late night on Thursday January 10 continued into Friday January 11 morning.

Though most of the fire has been extinguished, many parts of the factory are still in flames and a few fire tenders are still at the spot. The factory has been almost reduced to ashes. As candles and wax were stored in the factory, the flames spread quickly giving fire personnel a tough time.

Speaking to Daijiworld, president of Primacy Industries Ltd V K Thalithaya said that the fire sparked off in the basement of the factory and was noticed by the security personnel at around 11 pm on Thursday night. They immediately alerted the officials who in turn called the fire and police personnel.

He further said that the incident has caused an estimated loss of Rs 50 crore.

Asked about the cause for the fire, he said that the exact reason is not yet known, and that the matter was being investigated by the fire department.

"The cause will be known only after an investigation by the fire department officials," he said.

On the current status of the rescue operation at the site, he said two fire tenders are at the spot and some of the parts of the factory are still in flames.

The fire department informed Daijiworld that altogether, 14 fire engines were rushed to the spot, including one from Udupi, three from Pandeshwar, two from Kadri, and one each from Moodbidri, Karkala, Bantwal, Puttur, Kudremukh, NMPT, MCF and MRPL.

The fire department personnel said that the process is still on, and it would take at least two or three more hours to completely extinguish the fire.

Workers employed at the factory gathered at the premises on Friday morning and expressed their grief over the tragedy that has snatched away their livelihood.

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Jan 11: A major fire has engulfed Primacy candle factory at Baikampady here on Thursday January 10 night.

The fire was noticed at around 10.45 pm.

Fire tenders from across the city including NMPT and MRPL were rushed to the spot. However, in spite of intense efforts, the fire has been raging on past midnight and is yet to be brought under control.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

It is said that during this time of the year, there are no night shifts at the factory, hence not many were around. At around 10.45 pm, the fire was spotted by the watchman who immediately alerted the authorities who in turn called the fire and police personnel.

Though people gathered in large numbers, they were prevented by the police from getting close to the factory premises.

More details awaited.

All the people are writing the comments as if they were eye witness or grt knowledgeable persons. These people are just simple job less peoples who likes to fish in troubled water as some of the people have rightly said. Will any loss making company will pay its bonus that too with incentives. Will Any company destroy their own dream? Never, jobless peoples who are writing these stupid comments just go to the ordinary workers of the company how they loved the company and how company loved them, just go any worker and ask them what they have got after working in the company.
Just go to workers and ask about the ethical standards and other standards of the company. in which company you will see the top management having the same food in the same room with workers.

It was very unfortunate accident to a world reputed premier scented candle manufacturing industry and the loss is almost total. And I agree with Mr. R. Bhandarkar., M. that it smells fishy and there may be involvement of 'Big-Fish'.
The Primacy Industry is less than three acres of land, that will cost around 5 to 7 Crore. The structure, machineries and the raw materials may cost around 3 to 5 Crore.
The depreciation and other factors together will make this Primacy industry worth not more than 10 to 15 Crore and the owner’s claim of a loss of 50 Crore is an exaggeration.

The've already opened a new unit in Gujarat as it's cheaper to manufacture candles there. So I don't think this incident will hit them too hard if they get a good sum from the insurance agency. But this incident, especially after the new unit in Gujarat, smells fishy. Best to wait for the official report on the cause of the fire.

My gut feeling is that if the Management of this factory gets huge compensation reimbursed from the Insurance firm and re-starts the similar process & product based industry in the same place, then we too can agree with those who have cast doubts that there is something fishy. On the other hand if the Management doesn't venture again to start the same product based industry, then we can presume it was a totally un-predicted accident for the promoters.Because if it was a totally un-expected catastrophe for the management, they would never ever in their life would wish to start a similar process & product based industry and invite trouble once again. As most of the readers have expressed,I too wonder now, why the Management of Factories engaged in the production of highly flammable materials do not have in-house fire fighting systems!

As per my knowledge the price of each candle manufactured here is above Rs.250/- & everything was exported. They do not sell in local market & staff had good pay.

Since this event all workers livelihood will be in dark for some period. But some question arises as why the company never maintained its own fire fighting system or fire alarams or hidden cameras. When they deal with crores & when it mainly use wax, it is quite necessary to have adequate protection system.

Fire Tenders are come from NMPT and MRPL and lets us think about our refineries in Mangalore. If there are mishaps in Petroleum Companies , imagine the disaster .
