Mangalore, Jan 13: The SCDCC Bank on Sunday January 13 organized a special thanksgiving programme to honour Shivaram, the train driver whose presence of mind and quick action saved the lives of nearly 1,800 passengers of Yeshwantpur-Kannur Express that derailed on January 4 near Sakleshpur.

Shivaram, a resident of Mysore, was felicitated by Oscar Fernandes, Rajya Sabha MP, and Rajendra Kumar, president, SCDCC Bank. Matti Lakshminarayan Rao, a passenger in the train too felicitated Shivaram on the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, Rajendra Kumar said that people like Shivaram truly deserve appreciation and accolades, as it was because of his presence of mind and dedication towards his job that he could save nearly 1800 lives. "Hence ,with a view to recognize his efforts and bravado, this felicitation programme has been organized," he said.

Narrating the January 4 incident, Shivaram said that as the train approached the Soorikumeru tunnel near Sakleshpur, he experienced a sudden shift and a downward movement in the train's path. Sensing danger, he applied breaks immediately, and at the same time made sure that the sudden action would not harm anyone.

"The train was inside the tunnel and it was too dark. Later arrangements were made to drag the train out and make sure everything was fine," he added.

In his address, Oscar Fernandes lauded Shivaram's heroism and also expressed his gratitude to Rajendra Kumar for recognizing and felicitating Shivaram. He also cited two other similar instances where train tragedies had been averted.

Naveen Kumar Soorinje, vice-president, SCDCC Bank, Rohan Monteiro, MD, Rohan Corporation, Raju Poojary, Sudhir Hegde, railway department officers and others were present.

The train driver should have been felicitated by Mr.C.T.Ravi, District in charge Minister and not Oscar Fernandes.

Shivaram has indeed done a very creditable job. Because of his presence of mind he has saved the lives of over 1800 people.

As I read in the media that he has been honored, I feel that we should go a step forward and do something more for Shivaram. It would be a good idea for all Banks to approach their clients and request them to contribute some amounts towards a special fund proceeds of which could be handed over to Shivaram in the form of a gift. This would help this cautious driver who may retire in another seven years from service.

    Friends,

I don't know which report to believe. I read in a Kannada Newspaper yesterday (12-01-2013) of Mangalore Edition. According to them it was driver Shivaram's fault. It was said that driver applied A9 brake which broke the track. As a proof for this, 3 boggies had moved past the BREAK spot. If this BREAK was existing before, 3 boggies would not have moved!

I don't remember which news paper was that exactly. But it was either UDAYAVANI and VIJAYAVANI.

Anyway, Shivaram needs big applause if he has alerted it.

I salute Mr Shivaram, the Train Driver of Yeshwanthpur-Mangalore-Kannur - Karwar express for his bravery act and saving the lives of more than 1800 passengers due to his presence of mind, if not the tragedy would have been great where the Train would go deep down from the bridge.
As I write these comments, I remember the similar incident that took place on 13th July 1994. It was raining heavily in the entire coastal belt. I had travelled more than 58 times betweem 1993 to 1996 by train on Mysore -Mangalore-Mysore route. I boarded by train to Mysore on that day which left Mangalore at 8p.m. which was delayed by 2 hours, and reached Subramanya Station at 10.30p.m. but were told that train would not move further due to the landslide between Yedakumeri and Dhonigal on the Ghat section but ultimately the train was returning to Mangalore at 12 midnight. As the train was moving towards Mangalore and hardly covered around 10 kms, landslide took place and heap of mud fell on the tracks and the train driver applied the brakes and at that time, the passengers were sleeping including myself. The rain was lashing the train. Somehow the train was reversed to Subramanya Station. Next morning we all met the Train Driver whose name is not known but the Gurard's name was Mr. Akbar. We thanked the Train Driver. The Train Driver said that he was more concerned with passengers and the Gurard Mr. Akbar said it was the goodness of somebody had saved us all. If the train had run over the heap of mud that fell on the track, there would have been major tragedy and I would not have been here to write these comments. We were saved by the almighty God. Those days internet, telephone -mobile and the media was not there to report these things. Anyhow, I too salute this Train Driver who saved us. He must have retired from service by now. May god bless him and the Gurard Mr. Akbar and their families. JAI HIND.
