Family of Jacintha Saldanha Ask 60 Questions, Get No Answers

London, Jan 13 (PTI): The family of Jacintha Saldanha, a Mangalore-origin nurse, who died after being duped by a prank call to a UK hospital treating a pregnant Kate Middleton, are yet to receive answers for the 60 questions sent by them to her employers and the Australian radio station responsible for the hoax.

Jacintha Saldanha's family have been told by King Edward VII Hospital, where the pregnant Duchess of Cambridge was being treated for acute morning sickness, that they will have to await the outcome of an internal inquiry which may answer some of the 40 questions sent by them to the hospital.

Saldanha's husband and two children have also received no answers from Australian radio station 2Day FM, which was behind the prank, despite sending the broadcaster 20 questions before Christmas.

The radio station's parent company, Southern Cross Austereo, has written back, merely stating that an official inquiry by Australia's media watchdog was under way.

So far, Southern Cross Austereo has not made any attempt to contact Saldanha's family to express their condolence or apologise for the hoax call, which has received international condemnation.

Saldanha, 46, was the duty nurse when DJs Mel Greig and Michael Christian called King Edward VII pretending to be the Queen and Prince Charles, asking about the Duchess's condition.

She forwarded the call to another nurse, who divulged confidential medical information about Kate.

The prank was broadcast by 2Day FM within hours, and made headlines around the world.

Saldanha was found dead on December 7 last year in the nurses' quarters three days later, having hanged herself with a scarf.

Her accountant husband Benedict Barboza, 49, son Junal, 17, and daughter Lisha, 14, sent King Edward VII hospital 40 questions before Christmas, in their search for answers.

But hospital chief executive, John Lofthouse wrote back, saying he could not give detailed answers as an internal inquiry is being conducted by the chairman, Lord Glenarthur.

"Many of the questions which you attached to your letter will be, or already have been, addressed by our inquiry. I would expect that our council will provide a copy of the conclusions," Lofthouse wrote.

Southern Cross Austereo said in its letter, "Southern Cross Austereo is co-operating with the Australian Communications and Media Authority official inquiry in Australia".

Labour MP Keith Vaz, who is acting as the family spokesman, said: "I welcome the fact that the hospital is conducting an internal inquiry, although I am disappointed that it will take such a long time for the results to be made available to the family".

"I feel that it would have been in the family's best interest that there should have been an independent element of the inquiry rather than it being chaired by Lord Glenarthur," Vaz said.

The inquest into Saldanha's death will begin on March 26.

Vaz said, "the family have appointed John Cooper QC to act on their behalf for the purpose of the inquest."

"The family will consider in due course any further representation that they may need," Vaz added.

Despite the initial delay in releasing the body of the nurse, UK has been very fair to this family. Like many other Nurse families who migrated to UK, these too got tremendous advantage in getting better life in UK. How many nurses in India can dream that ? Its painful to lose some one but its another thing to complain. Suicide is momentary decision. Her earlier attempts and subsequent treatment should have kept the family in close watch. Depressed person away from family for economic reasons is another question left to be answered by the family.

I think too much publicity was / is given to Late Jacintha's suicide case. Jacintha wanted to commit suicide twice earlier for different reasons. Actually, the family should answer those 2 earlier suicide attempt cases / episodes. Why are they silent on it ?

There is nothing Indians can do because she was a British citizen. what can the Indian Govt. do in this case, of a foreign national who died in London ?

One has no peace till they reach their shores. They have no peace after they reach their shores too. What can the Govt. of India do ? Who asked them to go there and ask for their ( UK )citizenship ? Jacintha could have continued working in Fr. Mullers Hospital itself.

Mr. Steven, for church authorities is is a normal funeral like any other. It is the responsibility of the family to seek such protection if required. I was at the funeral outside the church and the way the entire arrangement was managed, it is pthetic, with no respect to any individual attended to pay thier last tribute. The digging coverage if at all captured, what difference it makes afterall it is digging exercise whether it is for Jacintha's grave or any other..
If the issues were handled right by the family before hand, such disaster could be avoided. After all it is just transferring a prank call and does not call for such drastic step. Issues could be resolved and this is not the final solution. It may be beyond a common man's comprehension to understand what really went through.. Let pray for her soul rest in peace.

Many people above passed judgements about 60 question they do not know what those questions are? who responsible to answer them? Jacintha's coffin was open at home, many relatives friends seen her and paid last respect, it was a funeral and what family requested keep the media away from last rights, church authorities did not do anything to show dignity to the their loved one.
You can see the diging of the grave on the media, inch by inch do any one of you see these disturbing picture, how might have the family felt on their way, whatch the digging of their mothers grave, is it right?
Not only that the media covered entire burriel to the brink in the cemetry, i have never seen in my lifetime
what you feel about this, and parishioners including parish priest etc. There should be somelimit to politisize the issue all politician visited just to get media covereage, not because they cared about the family.

We are not judging anybody, but we want to save people from suicide. It is a horrible act to save the self respect or image, though this body will decay and has no more respect once one dies. No body cares the status of body. After a month it is skeleton. The stubborn act leads to suicide. If somebody pacifies or takes care at that moment, then ony that soul can survive. Only angels can stop. Why to go hell when you know the suiciders are going to hell.

Alisha:You seriously stay in the states?I seriously doubt that. You sound so narrow minded.Your mentality appears to be very cheap.Well here are few things which you gotta know.first and foremost the body was displayed at her house in shirva for 3 hours before getting to church.the family didnt want her coffin to be captured in the camera as it would become a permanent database on the internet and her children would be reminded of her tragic death in future. For the same reason even the family didnt even click a single picture of her body in the coffin.
Alisha,yu appear to be neligent firstly in asking your old aged mother to travel so far to attend the funeral of a person whom you dont even seem to be knowing.secondly even if she did attend, why are you complaining that the face was not shown and all. What pleasure would you had derived from that?

It is plain disgusting for people to judge a dead person or her family. You don't go to a funeral to see or do autopsy of the dead person, but as a sign of respect. This respect is given to the soul and not by demanding seeing the face of the dead. Disgusting Alisha and the likes who haven't learnt some self respect being in the USA. Hope something like this happens to anyone's family and they may learn the bitter lessons before passing judgements.

People in general consider suicide a selfish act, a mortal sin. However, before someone is quick to label the act, people should really think about what's going through the mind of a suicidal person.

Aside possible mental illness such as schizophrenia, a suicidal person has absolutely no self esteem whatsoever. The suicidal person has nothing to build on and believes no one cares about him or her. So the "think about your family and friends argument" is out of the window. Nobody knows the mindset of a suicidal person. Don’t think ‘it’s all in their head and that they are being overly dramatic and can just snap out of it’.

I have read the comments from the British readers in ‘UK Daily Mail’ and ‘The Sun’ and believe me, 99% of them sympathize with the victim and the family. And here we have gone on crucifying the bereaved family. Respect what they are going through. Do not trivialize their sorrow.

Moreover, dear Readers, please refrain from judging others. Who are you to judge the life others live. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged.

when she was hailed in the media all the above people commented good things abt her.The moment radio stations offering compensation came out, everyones views changed. This is typical indian mentality.I just wanna put forward few facts.Suppose if your family underwent this ,then would you yourself call the media and report it to them?We all know how the indian media is.They make a breaking news out of everything.Secondly for not showing her face ,has anyone even thought that it could have been her last wish which she might have written in one of the suicide notes.
Problem with the society is that they all want to interfere in others life. They will only understand its impact when similar things happen with their family members as well.

Wasting time in asking questions and waiting for answers. Commiting sucide means eternal fire. Biggest sin. Atleast now the family has to pray for her soul to rest in peace than prolonging and asking questions. What is the use Jacintha is no more ...It is of no use if you get answers to your 60 questions. It is very very sad people came all the way from far away places for the funeral to have a glimpse of Jacintha's face which has not shown to anyone. It is better to close this chapter once for all. Public is tired of reading the same story. May her soul Rest in Peace.

Jacintha committed suicide b'coz of her EGO problems etc. etc....It is better to keep quiet. I think people are fed up of this issue and media has blown this issue out of proportion.

we should have the strength to fight. she did tried to end her life before this event. What ever happened is past. now her family should ask 60 questions for them self, before asking others.

Whatever has happened was happened. There is no point in sending 60 questions to anyone or everyone. Let Sister Jacintha’s soul be allowed to rest in peace forever. No doubt she took her decision so quickly but we can’t do anything now. Though we do not follow violence or retaliation, but the World will come to know when any Australian Jacintha commits suicide because of Indian Prank Call debacle and we want to see how rest of the World would react!!!

People from all over the world supported this family. It is very sad that they refused to show the face at the funeral, at least a see through glass on the face of the coffin. That really hurts for the entire community. The family has the answers to all of those questions. People have lost interest and do not support because they were kept in the dark and denied to have a final look at Jacintha Saldanha's face to say a final Goodbye.

It would be better not to publish this story anymore and make it worse.

It is highly unacceptable for the crowd who waited days and days together to see for the last time the face of jacintha. Did the media not help them throughout for everything. So sad to see this. Is media not meant for humans. Its because of them many people get the help, like daijiworld is doing.Sorry to say this decision not to show her face was not right. we all know what must have happened to her. You huliliated her more by not showing her face. Is she not our sister? Just to see her coffin all the people gathered???????????.People should have advised them. because they didn't know what to do. We will never get her back again to see her. What about blessing her body before laying to rest? During the mass photography or video should completely be prohibited for any funerals ....Well I Have One Question With Family Specially To Husband nd family Dint u felt as our indian Culture how its hurt when u Put the crowd so far who came for jacinthas Funeral.... Now i cant Write more than this dear family..! whtever she wont come back nd just pray for her then wait for d answer or whtever..?... Think Just Wht Happend Princess Diana..?.!!!!! What answers family needs? After all, she has committed suicide clearly proving that she can't face any problems and suicide is a cowardly way of expressing one's frustration. Committing suicide is great sin as per our religion as we don't have right to kill ourself as only God has right to give and take life of a person. Also, I read in some other news that Jacintha tried to commit suicide before due to the problem she had with some of her relative. Basically this incident proves that Jacintha does not have courage to face her problems.

And her family knew about it but kept silent.her 'loving' husband and children were happy for her to live alone Mon-Fri in a flat with only her thoughts for company. Now they are blaming everyone except themselves..If they had taken good care of Jacintha she wouldnt have committed suiside over the silly prank call..
