‘Vishwaroopam’ in trouble, Karnataka puts screening on hold

Bangalore/Mysore/ Shimoga, Jan 26 (DHNS):  Actor-director Kamal Hassan’s controversial film “Vishwaroopam” ran into trouble in Karnataka on Saturday, with the State police ordering temporary suspension of its screening following protests in Mysore and Bhadravthi.

Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Bipin Gopalkrishna said in the State capital that the police will not permit screening of the movie, at least till Monday, when the Madras High Court is expected to pass an order on the Tamil Nadu government’s ban on the screening.

The police order followed violence over the movie’s screening in Bhadravathi town during the day. Two shops were set afire by miscreants. Tension prevailed for over five hours after the movie’s screening in one of the theatres. The police had to use force to disperse two groups which engaged in a verbal duel over the screening.

Trouble started in the steel town, which has over 40,000 Tamilians, when Kamal Hassan fans gathered in large numbers, burst firecrackers, poured milk on cutouts of the actor and raised slogans in favour of the movie, before the first show around 10:30 am.

This did not go down well with some people in the area. The theatre is surrounded by
houses belonging to the people of a minority community. As the situation was on the verge of turning ugly, the police stepped in. The authorities also enforced prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC for two days. Educational institutions in the town have been asked to remain closed on Monday as a precautionary measure.

In Mysore, around 40 people on Friday night went on a rampage at the Balaji talkies. The theatre is located in a minority-dominated area on the outskirts of the city. Miscreants smashed a showcase and damaged a part of the screen during the intermission and decamped before the police arrived. The police have booked a case under Sections 143 (rioting) and 427 (damage to property) of the IPC against unidentified people.

Both police and theatre owners are not clear about the identity of the people behind the trouble in Mysore and Bhadravati. They suspect that a fringe group opposed to the depiction of the minority community in the movie could be behind the incidents.

Following the incident in Mysore, theatre owners in the City stopped screening of the movie. Apart from the Balaji, three other theatres—Rajkamal, Lido and DRC Cinema—- screened the movie on Friday.

The City police directed owners of the Urvashi theatre to suspend the screening after the morning show on Saturday, which led to a brief protest from movie goers.

Cant understand how the assumption has been made that it is hurting religious sentiments without actually watching the movie .
The majority who have commented here have I guess never even seen the trailer of the movie .
If it was hurting the sentiments then the censor board might have taken action, if not one could approach the censor board for reviewing their decision .Why the fuss at this particular juncture when the movie is about to release ???

Watched the movie yesterday. Shot like a Hollywood movie. Everything shown shown is what has happened and what is predicted terrorists will do. Muslims from Indian are not shown as terrorists, but other way. If I write more people who want to watch the movie may get disappointed. Did not like the ending, looks like Kamal was in a hurry to end it and make a sequel. Protesters have not seen the movie. If people from every religion starts protesting about movies, 90% of Indian movies can be banned.

Some of the comments made by readers show clear hypocrisy! This reminds me a proverb “ hum kare to chamatkar, aur tum kare to balaktar” If this protest is not justified, how about the given below news dated May 2012.
BD activists burned the posters of the Katari Veera film and others raised slogans outside the Suchitra Theatre and Adlabs Multiplex near Mangalore.

Films are meant for entertainment n not for condeming or targeting any particular religion.if that has done then it has to be objected n wat ppl r doing it nw. After watching any particular movie ppl should go out with smily face with complete satisfied entertainment..but if these kind of unwanted messages are trying to potray in the name of entertainment is just unacceptable..Ppl who watch movie will have very different mindset and hatredness towards a particular religion wich will increase hatredness and indirectly spoils our countries peace...

My all time favourite actor is Kamala Hassan. I have seen his movies like Sagara Sangam, Guna, Swathy mutham, Rama Shyama bhama, Sadma, Appu raja, Nayagan, Dashavatharam etc. His acting is simply superb and unique. No one can match him. As per the review I read this movie also has a strong story line and Kamal has given his best performance. By the storyline I read, I feel protests are unnecessary by the mis-informed lot.

I remember, while the Babri Masjid was being demolished, he went to Delhi and met our PM Narshimha Rao to stop the demolition. He is real secular person. I have lot of respect for him. Some stupid people might have been used a weapon by Theater owners to teach Kamal a lesson. So we must understand the reality to comment on the subject, instead of hate mongering.

Typical Religious mouthed bigoted pre-fixed thinking that one of the reasons that the movies, events get shunted out is to prevent any escalation , with timeless religious sicksters all around and running around with a "mob mentality" and all they need is a small reason for riots, whether it is tamil vs kannadiga , caste, religion or any actor worshipping fans.

Now what you see is more of "who won" and "who lost" and pittance against one another as a backlash !!!!!

    Its a shame !!!

..This is simply a political rivalry between ruling Jayalalitha & Opposition Karunanidhi (producer of film is karunanidhi son)...Unfortunately, people are played with these stupid politicians who are trying to create vote banks on the lifes of innocent people..Nobody watched the movie, still on streets to oppose the movie...there are so many films based on terrorsim particularly on Afganistan, pakistan.. why only protest for this film...Then what about 'Oh my God', being a Hindu i enjoyed the movie..If we did'nt question what is written or what we practice in our religion where we will end up..If this type of mentality continues, then tomorrow onwards we may not find a villain in cinema with names of Bheem, Ram, Rahim Or Joseph...
