Mangalore, Jan 30: Prof T C Shivashankara Murthy, vice-chancellor of Mangalore University, exhorted parents to provide good quality value-based higher education to their children. He felt that this is the most precious gift they can ever give to their children.

He was addressing the gathering at the college day function of St Agnes College in the city held at the college premises on Tuesday January 29.

“Students who concentrate on innovation can contribute immensely to the growth of the country.  Freedom to take decisions and follow beliefs, equality in rights, privileges and opportunities, and universal brotherhood, are three important things we need to imbibe in our lives."

He further added, "We should be proud of our country which has been taking giant strides of all-round progress. Yawning gap between haves and have nots should be narrowed down, and poor people should be enabled to improve their living condition. Effective steps should be taken to reverse the phenomenon of students opting out of schools at a young age,” he said. Murthy also dwelt upon the need to have quality teachers to elicit an interest among the students to pursue higher education.

Dean (administration) of the college, Marina Pinto, welcomed. College principal, Dr Prem D’Souza AC, placed the annual report before the gathering. Colourful cultural programmes including a Kannada play, ‘Ayke Nimmadu’, were staged on the occasion.

I am extremely happy to see the great progress made by St. Agnes. I have great regard and admiration for this great institution. My three sisters had most of their education at St. Agnes and to the best of my knowledge my sister - later on Mother Carmela belonged to the first batch of graduates of St. Agnes College.

I had the privilege of being a student of St. Agnes way back in early twenties in Junior Kinder Garden division. I have had the pleasure of knowing Mother Aloysia as a little boy as she was a friend - philosopher and guide to my sister Mary Gonsalves. I had also the pleasure of knowing Mother Theodosia very well and she was my guest when she along with a number of nuns visited Delhi from Patna on an excursion. She was kind to my sister - Sister Hedwige when she worked under her in Patna.

It is my pleasure to know the Superior General Sister Agatha Mary of this order.. I would term her as one of the finest, gentlest and kindest nuns. On one occasion when I was driving Sister Agatha Mary from a function at their Ullal branch, we happened to see a poor man lying down on The Ullal bridge. When I stopped the car to help the poor man, Sister Agatha Mary lost no time in lending a helping hand to the person who probably was knocked down by a speeding vehicle. This poor man was transported by us to Father Muller's Hospital. His wounds were dressed and he was provided with a clean bed and all possible comforts perhaps for the first time in his life. He died the next day.

I have had the privilege to know Sister Linette too and I have no hesitation in saying that she is a caring and sharing sister and even now I take the liberty to see her whenever I can I would like to make a special mention of Sister Aloysia. Here is a PEOPLES' NUN. She had indeed led an abstemious and selfless life having ofted to go to Nairobi and other parts of Africa to help the poor people over there and indeed her name has gone down in history as the pioneer of the missionary work

    Superb show.

If you happen to attend shows performed in this college, you will say the Kannada film-stars are a zero.
