Mangalore, Jan 31: A man who lost both his arms following an attack by miscreants last September has had a new lease of life, thanks to the doctors of AJ Hospital here. Both his hands have been reattached in a rare surgery.

Addressing a press meet here on Thursday January 31, Dr Prashanth Marla, medical director, A J Hospital and Research Centre, said, that reattachment of completely severed both upper limbs with microvascular surgery has been successfully done for the first time in the state.

Incident detail

In the last week of September 2012, Sharath Chandra (32), a resident of Moodbidri, was attacked by three armed miscreants from behind at Mulky station railway track. They chopped off both his limbs. The left arm was severed at the shoulder level and the right was severed at mid-forearm.

They left him in the pool of blood and fled away. He was alone at that time and gathered some strength to get up and walk up to a nearest house for want of some water. It was then that his relatives and police were informed. This gruesome incident happened about 8 pm and later he was brought to the A J Hospital at around 4 am in the morning.

His brother went in search of both severed limbs and fortunately found them lying by the side of a railway track of Mulky station. Both the limbs were secured and brought to the hospital. He came in a life threatening critical condition of shock due to severe blood loss and was barely conscious.

The situation was immensely challenging for not only to save his limbs, but his life as well. He was immediately resuscitated and the team of doctors swiftly swung into action to conduct major surgery to reattach both amputated upper limbs.

Both limbs were rejoined successfully in an eight-hour long skilled microvascular surgery by the team led by Dr Dinesh Kadam, professor and HO, plastic surgery. The team of doctors along with Dr Kadam included plastic surgeon Dr Sanath Bhandary, anesthetist Dr Thrivikrama Tantry, Dr Rajesh Hukkeri and orthopedic surgeon Dr Shridhar Shetty.

More than 25 major limb amputation replantations apart from a hundred finger amputations have been performed by the team, with close to 1000 microvascular surgeries for various conditions so far over the last nine years. The surgery done on Sharath Chandra has been highly successful and he is fast recovering. He was brought to the press club in an ambulance of AJ Hospital, accompanied by the doctors.

Dr Dinesh Kadam, Dr Sanath Bhandary and Dr Thrivikrama Tantry were present at the press meet.

Congratulations to the team of doctors who performed such a complex feat. It not only involves connecting bones, but also muscles and nerves.
A similar such surgery was successfully done here in the states recently, where a war veteran who had lost both his limbs was given arms of a deceased person. This was a bit more complex as organ rejection issues had to be considered. In any case, I am glad such complex and multi-discipline surgeries are being done successfully in Mangalore.

    Kudos once again!
