Mangalore, Feb 1: Chaos prevailed at Lady Goschen hospital here on Friday February 1 as parents alleged that negligence of the hospital staff had led to the death of their babies.

It is said that there were two babies died at the hospital on February 1, among which one was born dead and another shortly after its birth.

When the parents of one of the babies took it for cremation to Nandigudda, they were told that the form was not signed as per requirement.

They were also told theirs was the sixth dead baby to be brought for cremation from Lady Goschen hospital over the last few days.

Shocked at this, the parents and other people went back to Lady Goschen and alleged that negligence of the hospital staff had led to the babies' death.

Shobha, whose daughter was admitted three days back, said that her daughter lost her baby as no proper tests were done before the delivery.

Shobha also alleged that some of the doctors have been demanding Rs 7000 from patients to save both mother and child. "Only those who paid the money had successful deliveries," she said.

Muneer Katipalla of DYFI who was at the spot said that nearly 80 percent of the hospital building had been demolished to build it anew, but it has been delayed indefinitely. "Meanwhile the poor are not getting proper facility and to top that, they are told to pay money too," he said.

Speaking to Daijiworld, superintendent of Lady Goschen hospital Dr Shakuntala said that in the case of the woman whose baby was born dead on February 1, the baby had died in the womb even before the woman got admitted in the hospital.

"As many as 20-25 deliveries take place in the hospital everyday, and most of them are outsiders referred by smaller hospitals in the outskirts. In such cases, babies cannot be saved everytime, and deaths occur. Also, in many cases the newborns are premature, and hence it is difficult to save them," she said.

She also said that contrary to what was alleged, the hospital provides all facilities, except hot water which will be introduced soon.

On the allegations that doctors demand payment for deliveries, she said that she was not aware of any such practice, and that if people face such demands they should approach her with a complaint.

Bunder police arrived at the spot and brought the situation under control.

i had a baby boy in jan13 through normal delivery only because my wife pleaded with doctors not to do Cesarean. while the doctor was forcing her to take for operation.
Do these doctors @ private hospitals have targets for normal & operation deliveries? operating a child out will benefit the hospital 15k to 25k more. and hw about carriying a long cut in stomach to the wombs depth life time? want children>? want Pregnancy. hws it in Saudi?/

It is useless to change the name of the hospital. What is the use by doing so if proper infrastructure is not provided with required facility. By now this LG Hospital should have been changed into a sophiscated one. Our leaders as well as Govt. is lagging behind. It shows their lethargic activity. Because of their carelessness parents lose the lives of their young ones. Really tragic. But the organisations and others should not try to attack the Doctors/nurses as it is not their fault. If they demand bribe report the matter to LOKAYUKTHA.

A appreciate the services of doctors in Lady Goschen despite lack of facilities in the hospital. It is a boon for poor people. I do not think doctors of our district go to that extent to demand bribe from poor patients.

Are these two useless guys Seee Teee Ravi and Yogish Bhat still busy with changing the name of the hospital while new born babies are dying due to lack of facilities and negligence ?

Affected parents must file a suit against both See Tee Ravi and Yogish Bhat without any delay against all negligence at the hospital.

I agree with one of the patient who said if given 7,000 rupees the infant and mother can be saved. If only these politicians are not corrupted these poor patients would get the hot water and the life for their baby. Whoever asks for the money publish it with the help of the internet media which is the voice of everyone.I can never imagine a new born baby and the mother after delivery to take bath in cold water. MINISTERS GIVE YOUR BABY AND WIFE A COLD WATER BATH. Then u will come to know about a helpless baby and a mother. STOP PAYING THE INCOME TAX.Isn't it the basic right of every person who is the citizen of India to get the free medical facility with full human respect without any abusive language by the medical and non medical personnel.(not all)
I would like to bring to ur notice that in foreign countries where we dont pay a single penny as tax my child got full cancer treatment which costs million Dirhams for free for two years with full respect and love and hard work of medical staff. God bless gulf for their generosity.God bless late Sheikh Zayed. Here I saw in the hospital where a site worker who earned less than anyone is given full respect irrespective of who he is.The reason for mentioning is the govt hospital is not favoring u, its ur money they are using to give u service unlike here we are only employees not citizens.

@anand,,,yes I am a doctor, a gynaec,,I comment only when I know facts,,,not on foreign affairs.when u,v made a wrong remark accept it gracefully.mortality statistics are maintained everywhere.if that rate is much more than the norms you can talk.our efforts are always to bring these neonatal and mortality rates down, by education, early screening and timely intervention of expectant mothers.when we get mothers at a very complicated state,, who has,nt come to us before there,s very little we can do.u have to understand these facts,,,if you also notice I,ve never commented on any one else,s opinion.,,the political part,,I,m not an expert.I won,t.but loose talk regarding my own speciality,, I will do so,,rightly.

Changing a name of a hospital is a easier job than to go and wipe tears and get into hassles of investigation and fighting for justice. Why would any minister get into such hassles?

@anand,, if compromised babies are left inside the womb to die as in Savita,s case most mother,s would be in Savita,s state.please do not comment on medical matters without in depth knowledge.whe that,s not allowed a preterm baby may be delivered whose chances of survival depend on it,s maturity status, weight and of course good neonatal care.how can one comment on negligence without knowing ground facts?it,s become fashionable to pass remarks loosely.think well and comment.in Savita,s case the issue was about stringent abortion policies in Ireland, not about medical care.

When Savitha died in Ireland, during a talk show one of the doctor was claiming that if she was in India, she would have been saved. If you see the mortality rate both infant and women post delivery, India's position is pathetic. May be he was referring to that particular case!!!!

Most of the patients who come to Govt.LGH are patients who are already into a complicated state of pregnancy,,,both with respect to the mother,s state as well as the baby within.,these patients are referred here from far away places,,as they cannot be managed there.when they reach LGH,they would be in such a state that we have to deliver them or it might turn fatal for the mother.there are many such patients who have to be delivered before term,,naturally there are lot of premature babies, out of which some don,t survive despite best of care.if not delivered the babies may die in the womb & it has disastrous consequences on the mother as well.so some baby deaths are inevitable in a referral hospital, where all complicated cases deliver especially with 550 to 600 deliveries a month.a monthly meet is conducted where such cases are discussed in detail to see what went wrong, if at all ,,whether it was preventable..media should also find out how many live babies went home rather than just report the dead.
