Kundapur, Feb 1: 'Turbanator' Harbhajan Singh, who has worried many a batsman around the world with his magical bowling spells, was the cynosure of all eyes at the annual day celebrations of Green Valley National School and PU College at Shiroor here on Friday February 1.
On the occasion, Harbhajan, or Bhajji as he is popularly known, laid the foundation stone for an international-standard swimming pool for the hostel students. The school also has a Dina wing (for differently-abled children) where the off-spin bowler spent his time entertaining the children.
An upgraded version of the school website was launched by Harbhajan on the occasion. He also released the school prospectus.
In his address, Harbhajan mentioned that he was an average student in school, but was always passionate about his goal.
"This passion has been my strength and everyone should have a goal and work hard to achieve success in life. I have been able to reach this level with the blessings of God."
He welcomed the new spinners of Team India and said he was training hard for the forthcoming series with Australia.
"I prefer Sourav Ganguly and secondly Anil Kumble as the next coach for the Indian team," he said.
When asked his opinion on BCCI's opposition to umpire decision review system (UDRS), he said, "As a cricketer, I am bound to obey BCCI's decisions."
Principal John Mathew welcomed the gathering.
Managing trustee of the School Abdul Khadar was on the dais.
Addressing the students at the annual day function later in the evening, Harbhajan said that every student is a hero, and everyone has talents. "We should encourage students and help their talents to bloom. Students should involve themselves in not only academics but also social and political spheres," he said.
"Karnataka has given good opportunities for students seeking education. Coming to Shiroor today has made me realize the high quality of education in this state," he lauded.
Students of the school presented cultural programmes on the occasion. Merit students and achievers were honoured.
