Bangalore, Feb 3:
The Bangalore Auditions of the First All India Konkani Dance Contest, Yaya Ind-Ya Mayaya, on February 3 witnessed enthusiastic performances from the participants.

The Auditions were held at the Nayana Rangamandira of Bangalore’s Kannada Bhavan off Ravindra Kalakshetra on Sunday morning.

The first-ever all India dance contest is being organized under the joint auspices of four Mangalore-based organizations -- Jagotik Konkani Songhotton, Konkani Prachar Sanchalan, Nach Sobhann and Mandd Sobhann.

In keeping with the claims of the organizers during the launch that any individuals of any caste, community, religion, region or ethnic background in the age group of 15 to 35 years could participate in the Duet and Group categories subject to the condition that they will have to have dance only to Konkani songs and music, the participants were non-Konkani speaking barring a single entry from the Konkani Catholic community.

Significantly, the Konkani Catholic community’s troupe, which participated under the banner Naach Mazheso, was from Mysore and had entries in both the Duet and Group categories. They received the loudest and appreciative applause from the organizers and the audience.

The Mysore dance troupe – Naach Mazheso – was the lone group, which also had a single male dancer in Keerti Deep D’Souza, as all the other dancers in Duet and Group categories were female.

Yet another Konkani troupe, which sent its entry for the Group category and opted out at the last minute due to illness of two of its key contestants, was from the Kharvi community.

Interestingly, one of the Bangalorean dance troupe – Dhrishti Art Centre – from Sahakaranagar, comprised of dancers from Kodava community, who received thunderous ovation for their interest and competitive spirit.

The other Bangalorean dance troupe - Lets Dance – from Koramangala, also comprised of non-Konkani Catholics.

The contestants in the Duet and Group categories presented a very enthusiastic, energetic and attractive dance performances, which were warmly appreciated by the audience.

Mandd Sobhann Gurkar and General Secretary Jagotik Konkani Songhotton Eric Ozario, who explained the rules, said cash prizes of over Rs 5 lakh plus attractive gifts and hampers worth over Rs 1.25 lakh will be presented along with other attractive prizes.

After drawing the lots for deciding the order of contest, Eric Ozaio presented flower bouquets to Federation of Koknani Catholic Associations (FKCA) Chairperson Aida Margaret D’Cunha, Mysore Konkani Association team leader Victoria as also the judges Naveen Lobo and Anil D’Cruz. The contest was formally declared open by senior journalist and Daijiworld Representative in Bangalore Gabriel Vaz.
