Mangalore: Drug peddling - police raid petty shops near schools, colleges

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Feb 5: The police department, which hitherto used to give assurances without any effective follow up action thereafter with regard to drug peddling, woke up to the need for serious action after a girl student lost her life because of drug addiction.

On Monday February 4, the police raided several petty shops located within the vicinity of educational institutions in the city, and took into possession tobacco products like bidis and gutkha.

The raids were guided by deputy commissioner of police (city central), Kavita. Inspectors Manjunath Shetty attached to Bunder police station, Raghava Padil from Kadri, and Ramachandra Malegoudar (Urwa), apart from Barke police sub-inspector, Mohammed Shariff, led the surprise raids.

Sources said tobacco products were seized from these petty shops, as shops located near the schools and colleges are barred from dealing with them. Sources revealed that the items so seized accounted for two gunny bags.

In the meanwhile, student organizations too appear to have decided to act against the drug abuse. Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad organized human chain on Monday at Basaveshwara Circle near Karnataka Polytechnic in the city, while National Students Union of India submitted a memorandum to the city commissioner of police, urging him to take steps to put an end to sale of drugs.

Ooru Kolleh hoda mele Kote Bagilu Hakida. Once the situation has gone out of hand now the police and the concerned authorities are trying to take action. Well this situation was prevalent nearly 15 to 20 years ago. Small children being enticed into drug habit by selling Ice Candies laced with drugs. This when brought to the notice of the concerned by the school authorities, the peddlers were arrested and then released with just a rap on their wrists i.e. a small penalty. Now this paper tiger has grown into a menacing beast and eating our young generation. Parents, educators be alert to keep a watch on your offsping before it becomes too late. When they demand huge pocket money please check it out do not indulge their whims and fancies just because you can afford it. Please do not hesitate to give timely medical / rehabilitation assistance to the afflicted for fear of social censorship. After all it is your child the society who condemns will not come to your aid when everything is lost.

This is a joke by police dept. seizing Gutka and Beedi. If they are really intersted to catch drug peddlers, it is not an impossible task to them. Even if BD is really interest to catch drug peddlers, they could have done it long ago when they learnt about Sneha's slavery to this evil. It was simple for them to be vigilant on her/her friends and catch the drug peddler. But.......who are the real drug peddlers ? Is it the same people who were pretending to be helping Sneha's parents ?

When the students are in high school levels they are fine. Once they enter the college slowly their enviroment get changes. They come across new friends and as well as senior students aquitances. Mostly new students are unaware of the situations in colleges. New students anxious to make new friends.First they go to the resturent, icecream parlours, birthdays partys and so on. Slowly from here they divert their path. Old students are having contact of the drug dealers. First they take as a fun sake and may be without cost. When habituated there is no way to return. Person will be afraid of sharing his problems with others. When the young children going to the colleges to setup their futures, and steping in to the wrong path. Most of our children are becoming the victims of the drug mafia's. Financial Background of most of the students are not so healthy, When the offer comes from drug dealers to earn some money for their pocket expenses , why not? Finally not only he/she falls in the trap, and others too.My humble plead to all the students be aware of these habits! Think about your parents and their hardships. And motives about your future life to build up our modern India, you will not go wrong. All the parenets be alert, visit the institution atleast once a month and find out your childs progress and check the attendance, so the student also will be alert.

HS attack might have brought bad name for the attackers. But one thing is sure that the victim's lives are saved and their parents have come to know about thier activities( hope they have changed thier attitude and behaviour now).Otherwise these girls would have met the same fate of Sneha one day. Slap on thier face is infact a life saving drug. The HS attack as well as Sneha's tragedy is also an eye opener to many parents who never drempt in thier wildest dream that 9th std girl can become a drug addict.
Many people disagree saying that HS attack has no connection with drug, but it may be a prelude as we see in Sneha's case she was involved with parties,DJ's ,alcohol, gutka and finally drugs

Seizure of Gutka and Beedi near school NO USE...... Bcoz students may buy these things near their house...or they may buy from other students ( mini smugglers )

Secondly,State Govt has to create Anti-Narcotic cell of State Police in Major Cities in Karnatka, So these Particular dept. can check/counter check the drugs activites in Cities/Towns.

Years back, all vices started with Beedi, then Cigar, next Gaanja.....after that Charas......then Heroin

To learn danger of drugs / eradicate these vices college Mgmt should teach Value Education to students with the help of Priests ,College Professors, Doctors, Police Officers...
( As a students of St.Aloysius College 1984-1987 we have got opportunity.

The solution is only BD. Many illegal activities are already moved out of Mangalore with the fear of BD. Well done BD. keep up your good work.

Children will not think about their parents how they will get hard work bec. of their children. when parents know about their children had like this habits. very very hard to control their mind. so we need to work our country police team persons to work hard to find out for drugs sales. who ever spoiling their school children and many persons life. we should work hard to stop drugs sales for shops. i salute the police personnel who think their mind to find out the drugs sales shop near school or everywhere. give them strict punishment and cancel their shop licence. this kind of business spoil of our brothers and sisters life. take care and avoid to take this kind of drugs...........

Here in India (not limited to Mangalore only)problem is as long as nothing is happened seriously nobody whether it is police department or any other related departments, authorities bothered to take any interest to weed out the menace unless it is surfaced again.Once it is surfaced again everybody concerned wake up from their slumber and pretend as if they are really interested in solving the problem but over a period of time the issue whatever the intensity/impact may be, will be cooled down slowly without any result. What I am saying is why only restricted to school/college/temple premises. Why can't we stop manufacturing or ban completely those items including alcohols, cigarette and tobacco products etc which is harmful to younger generation like students in particular and society in general. Will they?.No because related departments/government loose their considerable amount of revenue out of it but which is at the cost of innocent students, poor people. Why can't we stop or ban provided all the concerned govt/departments/authorities evince an interest.Nothing is possible in this world.Everything is possible with little bit of efforts which include public co-operation/contribution as well. Now who is suffering and who is loosing their children, the parents who sacrificed their whole life in upbringing their wards to this level.I request all the government authorities/departments in the best interest of society particularly students segments please please stop this menace of drugs, drug mafia, alcohol, tobacco products at the eariest and make this society drug, alcohol, tobacco products free country.Jai Hind.

Why raid petty shops only? Drugs is the one of the most lucrative businesses in the world. Anybody to whom money is everything in the world can involve in it. Police as well as other law enforcement officers like excise and customs should be granted special powers to conduct random raids and inspect other commercial establishments like posh shops, restaurants and suspicious places.

Our police caught poor goodangadi owner, not the real culprit who are carrying drugs in their pocket, Bags, Cyber Caffe and vehicles like Bike, car autorickshaw etc. and selling drugs

nowadays youngsters get easily involved in smoking, drinking an consume other drugs.they think its cool and trendy these days.if we smoke or drink its a fashion now.they enjoy going high in trance and they feel going high is the best thing in the world. they never realise the consequences and when they do realise its too late.they go under depression an end up in suicide.parents need to educate and advice their children on these issues because 15-23 is a critical period for any youngster.they can easily get addicted an once they do then it ll surely be a habit.Movies, TV shows are also a part of these addiction.but we cannot just pick each and everything in media.parents need to take a serious step in educating children.nowadays parents are busy in office no time to spend time on kids.educating kids on awarness global warming issues, environment protection, doing good to society, extra curricular activities are all best options.youngsters will be occupied and focussed.

I shall take the privilege of making a suggestion
    1) All schools and colleges should monitor the students and identify drug abusers by seeking information from fellow students. The said students should be counseled. In the event there is no improvement they should be secretly referred to the police.
    2) The police should keep a tab on such students as to their whereabouts, habits and contacts.

This way the police will be able to nab the real drug pusher culprits

As per the latest report World No 1 position for Mouth Cancer (Mainly caused due to chewing Tobacco, Smoking) goes to INDIA... We must think twice .. Time for us to create awareness within our circle and young generation.. It should be started from root level like schools, colleges..
There is no point in hiding Beedi / Cigarette from students.. Create awareness so that they will reject it from heart!

Kudos Mangalore Police, we want your department to arrest those drug smugglers and dealers but not Bidi and Gutkha products or sellers. What if you ban selling Bidi and Gutkha near Schools and Colleges, our honorable Students will stop using it? When we ban Bidi, Bidi Workers Associations will protest, if Gutkha Ban then their Association will protest. Unless we teach and convince our Students not to use those products and impact or health hazards of those products, it can’t be controlled in India. Even few School Teachers send their students to bring their Cigarettes, Gutkha, etc during school hours!!!
