Mangalore, Feb 5: The DK district unit of National Student’s Union of India (NSUI) and the Youth Congress submitted a memorandum to the commissioner of police about curbing the supply and consumption of drugs on college campuses and other places.

Many poor and innocent students have become a victim to this drug menace. Recently, this addiction lead to the death of a student named Sneha. Lots of such similar cases have been happening in and around the city. This clearly states that there is a major racket behind the supply of drugs. The supply chain has been carried out without any fear.

Many memorandums have been submitted so far on this issue, but the action taken has been unsatisfactory. So, it has not had any major impact on the consumers or the sellers.

This memorandum said that the police department has to be very strict in this matter and in cases relating to drugs. It suggested that major awareness programmes be organized in association with Mangalore University and the colleges under its jurisdiction.

The memorandum called for strict action against such activities, failing which it said the NSUI is ready for a major fight against the drug menace.

Speaking to the media, Mangalore police commissioner Manish Karbhiker said that students are highly affected and falling victim to the drug menace. “Many cases relating to drug supply, selling and consumption have been made earlier and drugs have been seized as well as arrests of the accused,” he added.

“Parents need to keep an eye on the movements of their children. Any suspicious behaviour has to be monitored and carefully checked to prevent unwanted incidents. Parents need to go keep any eye on their whereabouts in all possible ways. Police have taken action and will continue to take strict action against such menace,” he added.

Addressing the media, Mithun Rai, district president, Youth Congress, said, “The Youth Congress and the NSUI strongly condemns the death of the girl who lost her life to this addiction. Both drug consumers and sellers have to be severely punished. Awareness campaigns at the school and college levels have to be done and NSUI and Youth Congress supports these campaigns.”
