Karkala: Missing school boys safe in Mumbai

Daijiworld Media Network - Karkala (NM)

Karkala, Feb 7: Manish and Austin Fernandes, the two 13-year-old boys who went missing on the morning of Tuesday February 5 are safe in Mumbai, it is learnt.

The boys had started for school on the February 5 but they neither reached their school nor returned home. A missing complaint was then lodged with the Karkala town police.

Manish's parents reside in Mumbai and he was staying in Karkala with his uncle. It is to his parents' house that Manish went, along with Austin.

Speaking to daijiworld, Manish's uncle Lokesh who resides at Karkala said that Manish was staying with him after studying till standard 7th in Mumbai. "However, ever since he came here, Manish has been feeling homesick and wanted to go back to Mumbai," he said.

On February 5 morning, the boys reportedly took a bus to Udupi and from there caught a train to Goa, from where they left for Mumbai. On reaching Mumbai on Thursday February 7 morning, Manish contacted his parents in Khar (East) who in turn informed his uncle here.

While they were in Goa, Austin called one of his classmates and asked him to collect his book from his house. This information was passed to Lokesh when the latter went to their school to enquire about the boys. Lokesh then got in touch with Austin's parents in Karkala, and after determining the location from where Austin had made the call, members of both the families together left for Goa in search of the boys.

Meanwhile, the boys who stayed overnight in Margao railway station were confronted by locals who began questioning them about their whereabouts and how they came to be there. Frightened, the boys left for Mumbai on February 6 evening, even as their relatives searched for them in Margao.

On reaching Mumbai, Manish got in touch with his parents while Austin also called back home. Both the boys are safe.

Austin's parents have reportedly gone to Mumbai to bring him back.

Asked how the boys managed to pay for the journey, Lokesh said that Austin had some pocket money and that he also sold his mobile phone for the purpose. He further said that as Manish had stayed in Mumbai earlier, he was familiar with travelling by train and knew the place.

The boys are studying in class 8 in Christ King English Medium School.

Manish is in need of the love of his parents not his uncles. An uncle cannot give the love of a father in the same way an aunt cannot gove the love of a mother. Parents try to understand manish and ask him where he want to study?i m sure the boy must have expressed his suffering in his uncles hands. But these parents were not listening to his grief. Then he must have planned which is the best way to be with his parents. Wish u goodluck manish. Dont come back stay with ur parents and study well. U r brave. About austin i dont know. He must have given courrage to manish as he cannot travel alone, or austin must have spent for manish journey since they were friends.

I still remember, back in the days, when i was just abt this age i had planned to leave home too. Apparently the fathers beatings and fear environment at home had made me be too relaxed and restless at school, which had by the way shown clearly in my grade card.! Things had kept getting worse when it further worsened the situation at home and school was the only place where i cud even scream or laugh or play or be in control of what i should do or not do.!
If i had little more guts or little less brains i would run away for sure.!
(if i had too little brain and too much guts i would commit suicide.)
These kids seem to be in a similar situation. Please, the family should undergo counselling. And, anybody who beats a child must be shot at sight.!

The duo need to be examined by a child psychologist as this is a dangerous age (9-13yrs) to get into all sorts of things. I don't think it was pre-planned, it just happened. One of them suggested, second one got carried away. I remember a similar incident 30 years ago, when one of our classmates at the primary school did exactly the same thing and before disappearing he spent all his pocket money on sweets, buns and distributed to school children randomly on his way back from the school. Later he was traced in mumbai. So, I request their parents please do not scold them or dig into their mistakes, but instead sit with them and discuss it in length. Be compassionate enough so that they realize their mistakes on their own.

I will not condone the actions taken by the two young lads.but, am flabbergasted by how they got the tickets and managed to get on a train?

question 1- how did they get issued tickets at that age. Was not the ID checked ?

question 2- How did the TC allow two boys to travel without an adult. All children travelling without an adult require to undergo formalities & fill forms anywhere in the world to be chaperoned.

Was there no such check done here by the raliways authorities??

Thank God, the boys are safe. We can imagine the relief to their parents. Un-solicited advice, kindly do not scold or beat them, but explain them the pain they had gone through. Encourage the children to speak and open up, so that in future such adventures can be avoided.

Thank god for the children are safe in the hands of the parents. But surprising is the dareness of the children to travel till Mumbai taking different routes via Goa.Why do parents give such a lot of pocket money to so small children and one of them had a mobile even which he was smart enough in this age to sell even, to make money for their travel and from where might have they learnt all this skill from?????.

If Manish wanted to join his parents why did he leave without informing his uncle? First and foremost why did the parents leave him with his uncle at Karkal when there are much better schools in Mumbai? Million dollar question.
