Beltangady: Happy ending to controversy over caste discrimination in mid-day meal

Daijiworld Media Network – Beltangady (SP)

Beltangady, Feb 9: The controversy created by the refusal of Surya government lower primary school students to consume mid-day meal prepared by the assistant cook belonging to lower caste, ended on a happy note on Friday February 8, with the parents of the students agreeing to allow their children to share the food.

Accordingly, the students of the school sat together and consumed the food prepared by the same cooking assistant.

District social welfare officer, Arun Furtado, Akshara Dasoha scheme district nodal officer, Manjuna, taluk panchayat executive officer, Kusumakumari, block education officer, Lokesh, and police officials visited the school in the morning itself, and encouraged the assistant cook not to lose heart by the previous day’s incident, and prepare food for the mid-day meal programme without any apprehension.

They also invited the parents of the students for a dialogue. Initially the parents said their objection was at the appointment of an assistant cook without informing them, and not because of the caste to which she belongs.

Later, on the advice of the officials not to differentiate people on the basis of caste, creed and religion, they relented and allowed their children to have lunch at the school.

When a person starves to death it does not matter who prepares the food. It doesn't even have to taste good. Anything goes ! When you have more than enough, then all these silly superstitions crop up.

Good, finally sense prevailed, parents had to remove, what they had sown into the innocent minds.
We should also appreciate the efforts of officials to resolve the issue.
Similarly, people who sow hatred in the innocent minds can remove it for society's/nations good.

This is our real culture. We know we have drawbacks but we are open to change for good. We have changed in the past, we are changing and we will keep changing for the good. Things do not change overnight. Nobody needs to criticise us for our drawbacks. We know to rectify them. Infact others should learn from us about adoptability to the changing times. No one is perfect.

the parents fear the arrest and court proceedings, thats why their reason was bit odd that they are against the school for not seeking their advice on the appointment and not against the caste.. Is there any practice that schools seek the permission of parents in the appointment of school staff...coward parents.. police should arrest those parents and book a case against them for demeaning lower caste.
