Mangalore, Feb 13: The residents of Adyapady on Wednesday February 13 protested against the Mangalore Airport Authority for conducting survey for land acquisition forcibly and without issuing notices beforehand.

The locals claim that since three months, three people identified as a surveyor; horticultural officer, and village accountant, have been visiting the area with the intention of surveying the land for acquisition by the airport.

At first, these three officials had informed the locals that they had to survey the land about 60 meters from the boundaries of the airport. On their second visit, they allegedly claimed that they wanted to undertake a survey as there were trees rising more than 7 meters within 65 meters from the airport walls.

The locals had even lodged an online complaint to the deputy commissioner (DC) and submitted a memorandum with the signatures of 65 people, but no response was received. Instead, the officials paid a third visit without any intimation.

During their latest visit on Wednesday, they fixed the prices of certain trees and arrived with the intention of cutting them off. Angered by this sudden and surprise move by the Airports Authority, the locals gathered during the visit and forcibly stopped them from conducting the survey.

It is also learnt that the surveyor had threatened to cancel the ration cards and other facilities of those who opposed the survey. Sensing that the situation was getting out of hand, the surveyor, village accountant, and the horticultural officer called in the airport officials to the spot. Three airport officials including Jayaram and a civil engineer visited the spot to collect information.

However, the officials had to return empty-handed as they could do nothing to appease the protestors.

The locals have claimed that they have been facing many problems due to the Airport Authority which they say has been negligent of the issues and problems faced by them.

In order to chase away birds and animals, crackers are used by the security staff at the airport and these are sometimes thrown into the neighbouring compound posing great danger of fire if they accidently fall on dry grass.

They also claimed that the security staff also raise their voice at the locals if they find any thick smoke coming out of any house, either from inside the house or when waste is being burnt. The Airport Authority has been only focusing on development and widening but the locals have been completely neglected, they claim.

A new emergency gate has been constructed near Adyapady School, but residents of the surrounding area have complained that the place where the gate is constructed is a private land. They questioned how the gate could be constructed on a private property.

Joseph Pinto, Walter, K Rama, and Surekha were among the locals who shared their grievances with  Daijiworld.

For the development place certain project must come up for the employment of the locals. To serve this purpose land is required. When the Goverment is aquiring the land it should give the proper compensation and the displacement of the people should be taken care. Government always shuld choose the non agriculture land for their projects. In 1961 Government aquaried three crop paddy fields, with full of coconut trees with the minimum compensation and sold it on higher rates for the industries. all the people were dispalce to the baren land were there was not transportion, now it has been developed. MRPL, Nagarjuna project, Goverment has taken huge agricultural land and farmers have been jobless.Beside this SEZ also grabibg the land. Airport authorities, has taken the land and paid compensation very less to the farmers, where has they aquired land for the runway Govt had paid Rs.8000/ I heard. Why this discrimination. Let them take the land and give the land owner's correct message(Information) for what the survey is meant for. Earlier people were ingnorant, now peple are educated and aware of what going on arround them through media. My one question I do not get the answer within myself. How many or what percentage of locals are hired/employed for their project.Do the Govt had taken the survey of unempoyment of people, and created the substitude trade for these people? If the they are still unemployed, some of those people must be having some illegal work. They cannot be blame for this, people will do anything for their survival. My sympathy always with the locals, because at the end with their sacrifies, they are people who are the sufferers at the end.

This is real bad thing happening to the people. When one has turned a barren land into a smiling garden thinking that it is his own will give a heartache to the owner. This thing has not started today but has been going on and on. M,lore port, MRPL, Airport etc etc. I suggest that when the land is aquired a good sum of money higher than te market value, a percentage of the income for atleast the prevaling generation to be given and a job to one member of the family to be given. I dont think this is too much to ask before you are thrown away from your property. Money from the Govt goes only to the people in the middleone who survey's, one who fixes the value, and one who approves it. I think we should bid the land in Public one side Govt and one side private Party if private get's, it it can lease it to govt on iut's own terms, maybe this will another room for Malpractice. God help the Greedy.

If these people are not poor, then who is poor. They are innocent too. Otherwise, they would have made it political.

Those who opine that these people should give up their land for the betterment of the nation, please give one piece of your investment to the govt for upcoming projects. Then you will know the pain. Yes, the citizens should sacrifice for the nations progress. But every one knows by now how our sacrifice is being swallowed by sharks which are spread every nook and corner of the country.

I would say pay 10 times of the market rate. India has got resources. Both sides will be happy and the issue solved.

From the pics it appears the villagers are certainly not "poor"
and from the way they have got together to confront the officials, they are certainly not "innocent".
However, if the AAI and Dist officials have not advised and taken them into confidence, their concern and opposition to the activity is understandable. Some of them may have already been disturbed in the previous acquisition process, the scars of which are yet to heal in some cases.

    Dear Movin,
I do agree with yr concern and concern of everyone. At the present time, if someone with reputation or weight must meet the DC. This is routine everywhere. One needs to use the influence to get the results, am sure you will.
Make your case stronger, complaints will not fetch results.

Why the airport/revenue officials are playing hide and seek game with the poor/innocent villagers?

Be forth right. Begin a dialogue with the poor villagers. Convince them about the projects and future plans. Strike a decent deal with them. I am sure they will agree. Please don't show your might which will make the situation worse.

Mr.Francis i would like to inform you that we already gave two complaints to DC but they dint take action.
just think if any one named by government official came to your land and says that they want to cut your trees, would you allow it.
we are not objecting improvement but we are objecting the negative works in the name of improvement of airport

First of all, the local residents should go to DC's office and talk to him. Any future plans by Airport Authority, DC is well aware. For Airport expansion, definately there are plans. Local residents should seek appropriate compensation should they need to sacrifice their property.
