Mangalore, Feb 20: As part of the two-day nationwide strike against price hike of commodities and other labour issues, various workers and labour associations in Mangalore held a major protest in front of the DC Office here on Wednesday February 20 at 10 am.

Addressing the gathering, CPI (M) leader B Madava said that, "The 48 hour long nationwide bandh organized called trade unions has seen a successful start. The bandh has also been successful in the Dakshina Kannada district."

"Large number of bank workers, government and private firm workers have joined together this day for this protest, which itself marks the success. The UPA government has been continuously increasing the price of essential commodities, making it highly difficult for the poor to lead their daily life," he added.

"Price hike is not just a problem of the labour sector, but for each and every individual, hence this bandh has grabbed good support from all the sectors," he said.

"Nearly 6 crore tonnes of rice and wheat are spolit and the sacks are filled with rats and others pests. The Supreme Court has  also ordered to distribute the rice to the people for free, but the order has been neglected by the administrative bodies. There is no shortage of rice in the country, but the price of rice has been hiked in the recent days."

Madhava said, "The union minister for oil and natural gas Veerappa Moily has stated that the petroleum companies have been asked to increase the diesel price by 40 paise every month. Earlier the price hike was once or twice in a year. But now it has come to a stage where the prices are being hike every month.

"The basic rights of the labourers have been snatched away and there is immediate need to take steps to uphold and protect the basic rights of the labourers," he said.

"The central government needs to take strict action and steps to prevent and protect the general public from price hike, failing which, major protests would be carried out in the future, which will also include a bandh for four to five days as well," he warned.

"The IT sector is suffering a total loss of Rs 20,000 crore due to the 48 hour bandh, but this is nothing when compared to the 2G spectrum scam of Rs 1,76,000 crore and Rs 1,80,000 crore of coal scam," he said.

Speaking on the occasion, BMS leader Narayan Shetty said, "The bandh has been successful in the first stage. It is good to know that almost all the trade unions and labour associations have joined hands in this nationwide protest.

"The money paid as tax has been misused at an alarming rate. And this is the right time to wake up from the slumber and protest against these issues of price hike and general problems," he said.

Leaders of other associations also spoke on the occasion and expressed their views and thoughts regarding the protest.

Members of associations like CITU, BMS, AIUTUC, INTUC, HMS, AITUC, AICCTU, JCTU, LPF, Bank and LIC employees associations, Airport workers association and others took part in the protest in large numbers.

Based on the increased population, poverty, unemployment, expensive fuel, dangerous pollutions, traffic jams, increase production, running and maintenance cost, parking space problems, road blocks, traffic jams and accidents, why can’t we think to revolutionize the land transport sector? With the help of millions of tons of weight (of people and goods) on wheels, which we move every day, can be used as a pushing power (instead carrying people and goods on wheels, pulling by force and moving from the stand still place till the destination) along with the gravity power of earth is which abundant, non-exhausting, free and available 24/7.

We have a big history of strikes in our democratic country. Results are some time good and some leads to worst for people. On avoiding from the danger and difficulties people avoid risk and remains at home.Price raise is too much in India. There is no single political party here without corruption. In fact India having too much politicians. They enjoy, loot the resources in new new methods. There is no one to think for lower middle class. We can change the Governments but not these politicians.British were few once, but our politicians are too many.Unless their number is reduced, the volume of looting never comes down. All the political activities are paid by citizens and not from their pocket.

Who is going to benefit from this strike is the biggest question????? Wil this have any impact on the pvt firms. Even they r part of the society but increase will definetely be for the govt servants n bank employees. Is there any minimum salary policy in the pvt firms? Even today its Rs.5000/- per month without any other benefit is this enough? To have a proper breakfast, lunch n dinner minimum Rs.125/- is needed how can this be managed with this meagre salary? It wud be highly appreciated if the concerned authorities visit the pvt offices n check out the minimum salary/P.F, ISI/insurance benefits for the employees is given or not. Let the Pvt firms also be the part of minimum salary of 10000/- per month as announced by some unions this wud be highly appreciated...

It is nice to see almost all the trade unions, bank employees, govt and private companies joined together and called for Bandh.I don't think these kind of Bandhs can serve our purpose coz all the responsible people sitting at the central or state governments are corrupt. On the contrary it is nuisance to public.Daily activities will be thrown out of gear/normalcy.Only advantage from this kind of Bandhs is additional burden on common(aam Aadmi)/middle class people. Now all loss incurred due to this strike/Bandh will be very nicely recovered by Aam Aadmi by way of different recovery names without any kind of Mercy/courtesy.Common man has to feel the brunt/pinch.
Yes, this shows how frustrated people(Aam Aadmi) are because of directionless management of respective governments. This is one way of expressing frustration when nothing is happened in spite of several human hue and cries against price increase and corruption in almost all the departments. Each and every party claiming/boasting that we are clean,we are superior and we are big.In reality all the parties are same and corrupt.Once they get elected, they will occupy hot seat of their choice in assembly and then they forget completely what they promised to public in their election manifesto/agenda and start looting one by one and fill their treasury at the cost of welfare of Aam Admi. What a nice politics in India/Isn't?
Anyhow this time all the parties expressed their solidarity.
Government has to get up from their slumber this and do something for the already frustrated/disgusted/fed up people of the county.By sitting in Airconditioned office nothing can be achieved.Get out of the office, get involved with affected people and get to know their actual problems, difficulties, misery and act accordingly. Now you are giving enriched food to the Media. That is all.Jai Bharat.

The rate hike/increase rate of food items etc due to corrupt politics. Instead of burning car and busses of people make strike against the corruption and burn the property of corrupt workers/politicians.

Justice Katju was so so correct with his evaluation of 90% of Indians. We should stop and ask the question 'Who really does this bandh benefit?'
If inefficient & corruption was insufficient, it's almost like we Indians have a desperate wish to punish ourselves further!

Dear Mr. Thomas, you are right. We cannot blame goverment (any government) " for hike in fuel price, which changes on day to day basis at international level"

But we should agree that "The money paid as tax has been misused at an alarming rate". Government is responsible for the best use of tax paid by the people. What we are hearing is scams after scams. If not Government, who is responsible for spectrum scam, coal scam and now scams in Deference procurement? Government is responsible. Not Aam Admi. Black money is flowing in every nerves of our system. I would have been happy if all trade unions joined together for the "fight against corruption"

Beware, if the strike is successful then this arrogant government will increase the price twice a month instead of once a month, to teach a lesson to all India participants. They better known to crush the democratic protests in a non democratic way.

This is nothing but misuse of democracy. We are stupid to blame the Congress Govt. for hike in fuel price, which changes on day to day basis at international level. Whichever party rules the country, the price hike is inevitable. When BJP was in power for a short period, there was too rise in gas price. Communist parties who are backbone of trade unions, were in power in only in West Bengal and Kerala and they have no experience in ruling India. So they play their dirty games with an excuse of price hike. We know how developed the two States they were in power. Without Gulf-income and tourism, Kerala would have been a big zero. Same applies to West Bengal too, which too is par below than other developed States in India despite the rule of communist govt. for more than 25 years.

China is a country with highest population and is ruled by only the Communist Govt. Unlike India, there are no strikes, no rallies, no dirty politics from opposition parties there. This is one of the main reasons they are far advanced than India. Our Communist Parties should take a leaf from Chinese book. The Opposition parties call for strike as and when they wish, without realizing its outcome on the nation and its citizens. Their purpose is not to save the common man but to save themselves.

Let us look forward in a constructive way. The points highlighted are noted respectfully. It is also noted that, various trade which belong to different national parties unions have united today in this protest. Why don’t we stay united and to develop constructive ideas positively to mitigate the problems we are currently facing. Hope It is a wake up call to all of us
